🚨 Day of Action: 1 October #dontpayuk

Our already record-high energy bills are rising yet again and will continue to be unaffordable for millions of us. Under Truss's 'energy price guarantee', the average bill will rise to £2,500 per year — 96% higher than last winter. 🧵 \1
We need to keep up the pressure.

Don't Pay is calling for a national day of action on Saturday 1st October - let's get out on the streets in our communities and keep building the strike! \2
Local Don't Pay groups across the country will be putting on events and actions in the build up to, and on 1st October itself. This could be community stalls in your town centre, banner drops, demonstrations, or whatever else you can come up with. \3

Don't Pay is a grassroots movement demanding a fair price for energy for everyone. This is what we're striking for #dontpayuk

🧵 \1
1️⃣ Reverse the energy price cap to April 2021 level

The energy price cap at 2021 levels was unaffordable for millions already, but this demand is to respond to the immediate emergency. We have demands to bring prices down further and on a sustainable basis. \2
2️⃣ End all enforcement of pre-payment meters

Pre-payment meters mean the poorest in society pay the most for their energy and are automatically cut off if they cannot afford it. This simply cannot continue and these devices and the higher tariff paid by the poorest must be.. \3

After 43 years of Tory policies (including the 12 years of Tory-lite Blairism), Margaret Thatcher has been vindicated - there truly no longer is "any such thing as a society." 1/ Image

@dontpayuk 🧵
I cancelled my Direct Debit with Octopus 3 months ago, I pay only what I can afford, and I still receive my energy. Here's a thread on how to do it, it's not illegal, it won't affect your credit rating, and you should not let them intimidate you.
1/
@dontpayuk If you use online banking, go to your direct debits section, and cancel the one for your energy company. Make a note of their account and sort code details on the back of your bill. In online banking, add a new standing order, putting in their account details.
2/
@dontpayuk Add in what you are prepared to pay each month (I pay £150, which I think is reasonable). Thats it, simple as that !! You are continuing to pay for your energy, so you are doing nothing illegal. As long as you pay each month, they will not terminate your supply.

1/ Yet more on @dontpayuk. Sorry to keep posting about this but it's I feel it's important to do what I can prevent influential people from parroting the utter crap that this awful "campaign" keeps pushing. My sense is they are struggling to cope with the scrutiny... #dontpayuk
2/ The latest nonsense is purveyed through EuroNews. A #Dontpay representative is now telling their audience that it's all fine because socially minded lawyers are in abundance, and ready able and willing to help anyone who gets into trouble with energy bill non payment
3/ Even if you are eligible for legal aid, it might not cover the full cost and there's no guarantee you'll win. In truth, this seems unlikely if people simply cut off Direct Debits and breach contracts without first seeking resolution.

1/ Privatisation of the energy by the Government makes this a political issue not. Pressuring politicians and political parties may be more effective than the don't pay campaign. Ultimately we want a political solution renationalisation. Don't pay isn't about that. #dontpayuk
2/ The question then becomes: "what's the best way of pressuring politicians"?

In this sense, the don't the dispersed nature of the private action urged by #dontpayuk is, in a sense the very opposite of the sustained collective pressure needed to secure policy change.
3/ Simply trying to hurt the finances of energy companies - which can be bailed out by government politicians - is both risky and misdirected energy. There is a real chance it will make no difference except to negatively impact the people refusing to pay.

I see that #dontpayuk is trending on Twitter. Energy bills 100% need to come down, but non-payment of bills targets the wrong companies: it’s like shoplifting your entire big weekly supermarket shop because their suppliers are price gouging on potatoes. Here’s a thread why: 1) Image
Say that an unprecedented global event lead to a shortage of potatoes, leading to their market price going crazy. The cost to grow, harvest & sell British potatoes hasn’t risen by much, but suppliers are more than happy to sell at the inflated wholesale price & make a killing. 2)
The supermarket is forced to buy potatoes at these inflated prices and sell them to you with as small a profit margin as possible. You end up paying a fiver a spud, but only a few pence goes to the supermarket and the rest goes to the supplier, who makes huge profits. 3)

1/ A thread on the connections of the Telegraph Journalist Juliet Samuel, whose recent article promotes @dontpayuk. For background, I recommend reading this article from @declassifiedUK: declassifieduk.org/how-the-uk-mil…. #dontpayuk Image
2/ The @declassifiedUK report mentions an article by Former MI6 Chief Dearlove, which references a story about alleged links between @jeremycorbyn and a Czech Spy in judging JC to be a threat to the nation: telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/06/0… #dontpayuk
3/ This argument - that @jeremycorbyn is somehow a threat - is repeated in this article by Juliet Samuel, which also references the security services planted story containing the Czech spy allegations: telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/… Image
