(1) There was a M6.0 #earthquake today in Antelope Valley, California. It was 4.6 miles deep and in a low population area close to the CA-NV border.

I've been through many >M6.0 quakes here in NZ. It's damn scary, for starters.

(2) I tend to ignore #earthquaketwitter whenever there's been a shake below M4.0 in CA. I seldom even notice one that small, tbh.

But when there's a decent-strength EQ there, it's another chance to promote safety and #prepping.

Visit ready.gov for the best info.
(3) As a health and safety / disasters geek I have bored many a person over the years.

Others listen and learn, which is why we all keep doing what we do. I prefer hurricanes to earthquakes, because you get some advance warning of them.

(1) Thread: Today's #earthquake #aftershock near Alaska.

I survived an EQ on 2/22/11 in Christchurch, NZ in which 185 people died and the city's downtown and coastal areas were destroyed. We're _still_ rebuilding.

Here's reliable info about today:

(2) As usual, Twitter was filled with anxious tweets from folk asking how bad today's earthquake and potential tsunami threat were.

Tsunami info: tsunami.gov

Earthquake info: usgs.gov
(3) The (mild) tsunami watch (not an alert) has now been cancelled.

Damaging tsunami near Alaska are extremely rare. Still, everyone there should educate themselves about what to do.

There are some rules of thumb that can allay fear.

(1) Thread: June 5th #earthquake near #Ridgecrest CA

I'm an earthquake survivor from NZ (2011) who will provide reporting & commentary below, just as soon as I can load the USGS pages properly.

This was big, shallow, & the city has 28k people.

(2) OK, have given up on the USGS website for now. Current USGS-sourced assessment of this EQ is:

Mag: 7.1 (severe)
Depth: 0.9km (half a mile, v. v. shallow)
Location: 17km NNE of Ridgecrest, CA (very close to city)
(3) I would be very surprised if there is no loss of life from this EQ.

185 people died in the Christchurch NZ EQ of 2/22/11. I was thrown across the room, but was fine, compared to others.

Ridgecrest: 28,000 + rural areas is a lot of people affected.
