Well, before TikTok goes away I’ll share a thread of my (unexpectedly) popular “Tales from Video Game Development” series. Feel free to mute if this isn’t your jam :) #career #gamedev

First story: running away from EA’s glass ceiling to Narnia GBA.
EPISODE 2: That time Narnia GBA broke the future #gamedev #nintendo

you know... I can’t be quiet about this already. hope my kupuna forgive me. (1/?)
Disclaimer: Yes my name is Sarah Kamakawiwo’ole. Yes it’s a big family at this point. No I am not his daughter Wehi. No I did not meet him - he died when I was four. No I’m not speaking for his family—our family. I’m speaking as a kānaka. (2/?)
Israel Kamakawiwo’ole was a musician. From all stories I have been gifted by those who knew and worked with or were otherwise connected, he was as depicted in this video. Gentle. Kind. Thoughtful. (3/?) But do you know what else he was?

1/ The "story" of #BattlefieldV is complex. While it is obvious #EA & #DICE no longer see significant long term profit potential (vs opportunity cost) for #BFV, how we got to today is worth revisiting. My experience tells me this...
2/ From the beginning, it *appears* the long term goal of #BattlefieldV was to follow the "beats" of the war, from the early European conflict zones to the end, and at the same time, make #BFV something more personal & "customizable" that previous titles.
3/ It's not hard to pull this from the structure we got, and it makes sense for a long running service title. #WW2 is a near perfect scenario (it's a war for God's sake) environment for a #Battlefield title that need updated over a 3-5 year period.

Each year the video game industry descends on LA for #E3 (The Electronic Entertainment Expo) to showcase the latest and greatest in interactive entertainment. And each year I do a statistical breakdown of the trends in gameplay mechanics. 2019 is my 5th year doing this analysis.
It’s no secret the gaming industry is laser focused on creating experiences that center violent combat. But engaging with a gameworld from behind the barrel of a gun or blade of a sword is extremely limiting. This is why my stats sort titles into combat and non-combat categories.
#E32019 started with the Electronic Arts press event. #EA only showcased 6 games. 50% of those were combat focused. Of the other 3 titles, 2 were annual sports franchise updates and 1 was a new DLC for the Sims 4. (I didn’t include Anthem because no footage was shown onstage).
