As an academic writing coach, here are the 9 mistakes I see PhD and grad students make when writing scientific papers.

A thread. 🧵

#PhDchat #ECRchat
#1: Thinking it’s laziness when you are procrastinating on your paper

🦥 Most PhD students procrastinate writing their paper (aka have ‘blank page syndrome’) not because they are lazy but because they don’t know where to start tackling this overwhelming project.
#2: Starting to write your paper by “writing”

📋 The first step of writing a paper isn’t to type out full sentences. It’s more efficient to first develop your story and create a good outline so writing just becomes filling in the gaps.

#1 Describe the broad problem your paper solves

😱 In 1 sentence, hook your reader describing a problem in your field that your research is contributing to solving. Every reader of the journal should understand this sentence.
#2 Provide context needed to understand your study

🌳 In 1-3 sentences, give the reader any background they need to understand the motivation of your study. Clearly state the specific problem that your study solves.

As someone who knows nothing about cars, I weirdly enjoyed watching #DriveToSurvive on #Netflix, the #FormulaOne docuseries 🏎🏎🏎

I found some interesting parallels with my experiences as an #ECR.

Let me explain...

#AMPlify2022 @AusMusPsySoc @AcademicChatter #ECRchat

🧵👇
Before we get started, I acknowledge my privilege as an academic with ongoing employment.

I acknowledge many ECRs will face additional challenges I haven't covered in this thread. Feel free to add your own observations 😊

OK, "LET'S GO!" (that's an F1 rallying cry, btw!)
🏎 F1 drivers are persistent.

What's the best for ECRs way to emulate them?

Keep showing up, especially in the face of failure:

• pick yourself up after disappointment
• don't let negative feedback derail you

3 story frameworks you can use to make your research presentations 🔥 🧵

1. The Journey

These 3 frames drive curiosity which will make people want to listen to your talk.

Great for talking about how a project went, reporting or chronological storytelling.

The curiosity driver here is - what we've done/happens next?

How to build slide decks fast. ⚡

Building slides so often kills time!

Here’s my guide to making endless reusable slides to help you build quickly🧵

#AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #ResearchTalks #PHDChat #ECRChat
🤔Stop thinking about the presentation as 1 long 10 minute thing.

Big talks, are made of smaller bits of content, things you say in every talk.

These are content chunks.

• That introduction you always do
• That key finding
• the story you always tell
• the method you used
💡 Stop thinking about slides as more than one bit of information

For this to work every bit of key information must have its own slide

This may mean having lots of slides, but that doesn’t matter

1 key idea = 1 slide

As I slowly progress through my research career, I have often been told that the next degree/career stage/job is so much harder than the last. The constant implication is that we don’t know *real* work until we reach the level of x. Can we stop this please?
Dismissing the challenges faced by those earlier in their career merely undermines and dissuades the next generation. I have as much admiration and respect for an eager undergrad as I do for the most senior academic. Respect is free. Share it widely.
Instead of belittling others experiences and creating an environment of fear can we instead take every opportunity to build? To teach? To mentor and encourage with kindness and positivity?

It's been 6 months since I made the transition from academia (postdoc) to industry (extension scientist).

I know many academics are curious about this, so here's a thread of my experiences so far:
One big change is having known expectations. They expect a lot, but it's all laid out and it feels achievable.
Not like the "just be in the top 2% for everything and you still won't be achieving enough" expectation in academia
I felt like the world had lifted off my shoulders when I no longer had to worry about how many FTE years post PhD I am or what my H index is.
Now I'm measured by the quality of the work I do, the interactions I have and the skills I have. And that's good!

It’s never easy to have a paper rejected after going through #PeerReview. In this thread we offer some advice to help you move on and move up. 👆😀

#AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #ecrchat #phdlife Image
Your paper was rejected? Sorry to hear that! It’s certainly not the outcome you expected after putting in so much time and energy. It’s common and totally normal to feel a range of negative emotions.

😢☹️😡😲🤯😭🤨
It’s important to deal with these emotions first. Step away from the paper for a little while. Work on a different project. Vent to a trusted colleague. Do something that makes you happy - go for a swim, watch BBC comedies, eat ice cream (at least that’s what I do).

Getting students to turn their cameras on: a thread.

I'm not the most experienced uni teacher, but I've been thinking about this recently during teaching training and wanted to share some tips from what I've figured out & what's worked for me /1

#phdchat #ecrchat #teaching
First: to explain why the tips work, I want to cover some common reasons I've gleaned from talking to students & observing behaviour. The most important thing to note here is that, mostly, IT'S NOT DONE IN BAD FAITH. This doesn't have to be a battle with students! /2
1) Many students are unclear/anxious about what is 'appropriate' for dress and background. Many do not have access to private spaces other than their bedrooms, or only have access to their bedrooms. They are worried it is inappropriate to have visible:
-bed
-mess
-housemates

when it comes to engaging #STEM #academics (an essential task in order to gain max momentum to tackle problems like #casualisation), i think 1 difficulty is that #activism uses a lot of logical fallacies. this makes taking action appear irrational 1/15

#AcademicChatter #ucu
examples:
people going on #strike = potential bandwagon fallacy

stories of injustice = anecdote, appeal to emotion

statistics = potentially cherry picked

calling out management = potential ad hominem

quoting/critiquing management = potential strawman
2/15
identifying an issue (e.g. casualisation) and claiming it impacts other issues (e.g. mental health problems) = potential false cause, and/or hasty generalisation fallacy

making broad statements (e.g. gender pay gap is a real problem) = ambiguity fallacy
3/15

Today's #ResearchTip is to remember to check, check and check again when you're submitting work. We all set deadlines but how much detail do we pay attention to the process of hitting them? Let's find out....
#AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #PhDHelp #ECRChat
Got a deadline? It might be for a paper, grant application, conference application. Put the deadline of when work needs submitting in your diary.
Next, work backwards, scheduling key tasks (e.g. training on how to write a grant proposal, researching what goes into your grant bid)
These need to be specific and realistic. If you have a paper submission deadline when you plan tasks to achieve it this needs to be broken into actionable sections. (So you *don't* schedule a paper submission deadline only to put into your diary 'write paper' on one set day).

i promised in this thread i'd offer an idea of an alternative #academic #publishing model, so here it is. be prepared, changing to this would require some seriously radical change... 1/17

#AcademicChatter #academicpublishing #academicjournals #peerreview #ecrchat #openaccess
i outlined in the thread linked above MANY flaws with academic publishing, so let's completely get rid of the current system.

in its place we have one global central database, funded by governments/unis collectively 2/17
everything gets uploaded to this database. this is our new single journal.

articles can be rolling, so they can be registered reports, the final piece, or you can add new data if you analyse more stuff. its flexible. 3/17

Today's #ResearchTip is about working on a team/group/community project, having good ideas, and owning them.
How do you make that work? #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #PhDhelp #PhDChat #ECRChat
You're working on a project and you have a great idea - perhaps it's for extending a study or improving research or the way researchers are supported. You might be unsure whether it's okay to share your idea and what might happen if you do.
Before you share your idea
- note down what you think should happen
- ask who it brings in/leaves out
- consider how it extends/improves current work
- check if anyone else has done similar (to help stack up your claims)
- briefly note what your idea/proposal is (write it down)

PhD candidates! Do you ever wonder what your thesis examiners actually *do* to prepare for your viva? Let me tell you what I have been up to for the last couple of days... 🧵

#PhDchat #ECRchat #AcademicChatter
Here is a thesis I’ve just finished reading. Every orange tab is something that I would like to discuss at the viva. The purple tabs are little mistakes we don’t need to discuss, but that the candidate might like to change before final submission (like typos)... 2/15
In practice, we have to prioritise so probably only a third to half of these points will get discussed. My co-examiner will also bring a list of things to discuss and will also not get to discuss every single one. 3/15

Make no mistake.

Australian medical research is in crisis.

In his article, @jcarapetis echoes the alarm and discusses issues at the heart of the ASMR’s mission.

The sector is on the brink of collapse.

But we can fix it.

@ausgov, are you listening?

Here’s how:

A thread 👇
We’ve been losing our skilled and talented researchers in recent years with an increasing brain drain due to a lack of funding.

#COVID19 has made this worse.

#ecrchat #phdchat #ScienceTwitter #AcademicTwitter
As @jcarapetis points out, eg. the @nhmrc funds only ~9% of research grant applications received from our future leaders.

And that’s not because the other 91% aren’t worthy of funding, but because @ausgov has ignored the funding recommendations of the 2012 McKeon review.

Health and medical researchers are highly trained + specialised, most having a minimum of 6 years university education + a doctorate in their area of specialty + years of continuing education and development.

why i am no longer publishing (my own) #research in #academic journals - a (long) thread 1/38

#AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #academicpublishing #academicjournals #peerreview #ecrchat #OpenScience #publicationbias

(some references at the end of the thread)
(i still have a few collaborative papers to write and these will be published properly for the benefit of my co-authors)

i will soon publish a paper on a pre-print server, with no intention of submitting to an academic journal. my reasons for this are manifold 2/38
1. #academia is inherently corrupt & the publication model facilitates this:
- unpaid labour (editors, peer-reviewers,& authors [ok, they do get paid by the uni which oft = public funds yet journals privately profit & we see none of this unlike other forms of publishing]) 3/38
