This is something I have experienced recently too, having had to advertise the same post-doc position FIVE times, and interview candidates on FOUR separate occasions
Here are my thoughts about this in a briefšŸ§µ1/n
I feel a big factor here is that #COVID19 & all the associated problems it caused for lab scientists has laid bare the precarious nature & short-termism of being a #PostDoc to #PhD students coming through the system & many have just decided "this is not for me"
2/n
The number of applicants was way down each time I advertised the #PostDoc position (and no where near the 36 that @Mad_Lancaster received!!)

Many #ECRs are anxious when they start reviewing for the first time. One of the challenges is how to write up the #PeerReview report (PRR).

Here's a thread that we hope will help šŸ§µ Reads: How can I write a pe...
In our experience, peer reviewersā€™ questions include:

*How should I structure the report?
*What should I focus on?
*How can I write a constructive report?
This thread is based on our paper in @HERDJournal, which is available Open Access at doi.org/10.1080/072943ā€¦

In the paper, we report on an analysis of the content and structure of our own peer review reports (n=62).

We are kicking of #arthistoryPDD with a welcome address by our chair @GursimOberoi who speaks to the challenges the past year has presented to the professional development of #phd students and #ecr researchers
1/7
Research has been put on hold following the closure of libraries, archives and museums; fellowships have been postponed or, in some cases, cancelled; publications delayed; and, in many cases, our projects have been reframed and remoulded as a result of the pandemic.
2/7
Many of us have paused our work to support our loved ones or volunteered to support the local community. We have vigorously adapted our way of teaching turning to online and hybrid delivery to guide and advise our students.

during my #PhD, i conducted a side project investigating what the barriers are towards making changes to the #academicpublishing system to reduce publication #bias

this showed me a rather dark side to #academia... 1/8

i got about 50:50 praise and hate for this. weirdly enough, the praise and hate were often about the same thing: the (early) stage of my career.

praise: "it's great you're so keen and have grasped key issues and taken action so early..." 2/8
hate: "you're too early in your career and naĆÆve to understand these issues. you shouldn't be researching this"

more worryingly, whilst i did get a lot of this feedback in person/by email, some of it was BEHIND MY BACK to my colleagues 3/8

This morning the House of Commons Science and Tech Committee @CommonsSTC will be holding an evidence session about the planned "ARPA-style" research funding agency & asking questions including the impact of these plans on ED&I. @ProfRachelGaN here, ready to report on the session!
You can join me in following the session live on Parliament TV - here's the link:
parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/e2ā€¦
It should kick off at 9 am and the witnesses will be Professor Dame Ottolineā€ÆLeyser,ā€ÆChief Executive, UKRI; andā€Æā€ÆSir John Kingman,ā€ÆChair, UKRIā€Æ.
Equality, diversity &inclusion is only 1 of the topics that will be addressed, & I personally am disappointed that such an important issue only merits part of a short one hour session. Nonetheless, I hope some key questions around leadership, accountability & scrutiny get raised.

My time is winding down as an intern on the #APSPPB and Iā€™m supposed to write a report...

So Iā€™m doing a twitter thread instead to share it out. Gather round to learn about my #PlantPathPol experience!
#OnBrand @plantdisease (1/n)
When I first joined the #APSPPB, I was very overwhelmed by being on a Zoom call (lol) with a bunch of professors and ā€œrealā€ plant pathologists. It took me a while to find my sea legs as they say. (2/n)
I didnā€™t really even know what I was getting into when I signed up for the #APSPPB, but I wanted to see how policy and professional societies intersected. And how #PlantHealth professionals (esp. profs) could impact policy. #PlantPathPol #SciPol (3/n)

Who wants to see the #Diversity data for @STFC_Matters, that was released by @UKRI_News last week?

The full data release is here, so if you want to see anything for yourself, go ahead: ukri.org/about-us/equalā€¦
@STFC_Matters funds research & training into astronomy, particle physics, space & planetary sciences & nuclear physics. This is important because @ukhesa only report STFC as #physics ā€“ itā€™s so much more!

STFC have a #equality & #diversity statement here: stfc.ukri.org/funding/promotā€¦
So, letā€™s start with @STFC_Matters #ethnicity data.

Worth noting that @UKRI_News collate three categories; ethnic minority, white, not disclosed.

We canā€™t separate out different ethnicity, which is a problem in itself. Image

Today is the 6th anniversary of my #PhD viva. I note it in some way every year. This year is a little different. Over recent months I've been facing up to the fact that I may not be able to stay in academia for the 7th anniversary. This is a thread on why.
Before starting on this though, a few thoughts first. As a white middle-class man I have never had to deal with any number of issues or obstacles that many of my friends, colleagues, or peers have. I can only imagine how hard it must be to deal with systemic obstructions too /2
Probably the last thing academia needs is another person who looks like me. That doesn't mean I want to leave, but we need to acknowledge the heavily uneven playing field that is in effect. If departments are already populated with people who look like me; it's time to ask why /3

A late-night thread on reproducibility and #openscience in cognitive neuroscience, including our upcoming series of (rather punchy) comment pieces at the journal Cortex. Gather round all ye.
Here is my editorial introducing the seven commentaries. Iā€™m going to move through each of them here in turn, and stick around to the end of the thread to hear about two new initiatives weā€™re launching this year in response psyarxiv.com/shryx /1
First up, Huber et al . report how they tried to replicate a study published in @NatureNeuro. After being invited beforehand to run & submit the study by one editor, a different editor then desk rejected them once the (non-replication) results were in. /2
