The day prior, as news of Ramos and Enrile’s defection reached Cory Aquino, she was staying for the night in secret at the Carmelite monastery in Cebu. The sisters saw it their moral duty to protect her, w/ conviction that they’re protecting the legitimately elected president.
At dawn, via Radyo Veritas, Enrile & Ramos began calling again for Marcos' ouster. At 5:30am, PH Constabulary attacked Radyo Veritas limiting its airing to Luzon only. A few hours later, men began cutting down trees & used these as barricade on roads near Camps Crame & Aguinaldo.

In the Snap Election in early Feb 1986, 2 contending parties competed: Ferdinand Marcos w/ Arturo Tolentino, & Corazon Aquino w/ Salvador Laurel (for Pres & VP respectively). COMELEC proclaimed victory for Marcos despite clear electoral fraudulence.
Aquino challenged the result as mass boycott of Marcos crony companies gained momentum. Meanwhile, the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) planned a coup vs. Marcos but was prematurely discovered. Upon failing, the coup plotters defected from the AFP.

On 22 Feb, w/ the call of Jaime Cardinal Sin for people to form human barricades to protect the military defectors led by Defense Sec Juan Ponce Enrile & AFP Vice Chief of Staff Fidel Ramos, thousands responded, bringing w/ them donations, bibles, & rosaries.
On 23 Feb, the 1st attempt to arrest the defectors were repelled by civilians who braved their bare bodies at risk of being crushed by metal tanks or being shot at.

#OnThisDay at 5pm, Enrile meets w/ Brig. Gen. Mario Espina of the #PH Constabulary, to plan the military movement in Metro Manila w/out raising any alarm.

At 6pm, Marcos called on Enrile. Enrile received 3 sealed envelopes: Procl. No. 1081, Gen. Orders, & Letters of Instruction
At 7 pm, Enrile went to the AFP GHQ & echoed Marcos' orders to military commanders.

At 8pm, Enrile claims that a speeding car overtook his convoy & fired several bullets, while they were passing through Wack-Wack subdivision, in Greenhills, San Juan.

#TodayinHistory in 1920, Jovito Salonga, democracy leader, lawyer, & Senate President, was born in Pasig City #PH. Beyond his sterling achievements as opposition leader during the Marcos dictatorship, his was a life devoted to his Protestant faith, justice, & freedom. THREAD. Image
Born to a poor family, the youngest of the 5 children, Salonga's father, Esteban Salonga, was a Presbyterian pastor & his mother, Bernardita Reyes, a vendor. He studied in @UPCollegeofLaw, but had to postpone his Bar exam when Japan invaded #PH in 1941.
Salonga joined the Filipino guerrilla underground but was captured in 1942. He was sentenced by the Japanese to 15 years in forced labor, but this was cut short when he was pardoned in Feb 1943 on the occasion of Kigen Setsu (Japan's Foundation Day).

Born in 1920 to a poor family, Salonga's father was a Presbyterian pastor and his mother a vendor in the market. He was the youngest of the 5 children. He would study in the @UPCollegeofLaw but would postpone his taking of the Bar upon the outbreak of #WWII.
Salonga joined the guerrillas but was soon captured in 1942. He would be sentenced by the Japanese military administration to 15 years in forced labor. This would be cut short when he was pardoned in 1943.
