Our #EPSB board did not approve the ASBA statement of confidence before it went out. We have been clear about our concerns regarding the provincial re-entry plan and the need for significant funding and improvements to ensure a safer opening. #abed #ableg
I'm frustrated that the association made a statement of confidence on behalf of all member boards, implying we support this stance. We've been clear that we will do our best with what we have but that it is nearly impossible to meet Scenario 1 fully with current resources.
You can read the board's school re-entry letter to our families outlining our concerns here:…

Mandating masks in schools is necessary, and Edmonton Public Schools had been preparing to announce policy for our own students today.

However, it masks the larger problem. #abed /1
We should not be relying only on masks to keep our students and staff safe. The province is relying on masks because they have decided not to re-open schools with any funding for smaller class sizes or physical distancing in classrooms. /2
#EPSB funding this year is less than our 2018-2019 funding. We have 6,000 additional students. We’ve been asked to do more with less and we've received no additional funds to assist with additional staff or space for COVID. I believe this is reckless. /3

Edmonton City Council is back and digging into the giant motion before them, on community safety and police budgets. You can follow along live on YouTube: #yegcc #blmyeg
This is the motion. And all of its many amendments.… #yegcc
Before getting to all these amendments... I've noticed that police speaking to #yegcc admit systemic racism exists but only in more general ways. There's not as much direct accountability or such for individuals. They're focus more on corporate-style changes, but within system.

Let's be clear. The Minister has told us repeatedly that the education budget is frozen for the next few years. That means, whatever the funding model review brings, there will be no new money for education in Alberta. #abed #ableg 1/10
At the same time, the student population across Alberta grows by 15,000 per year. #EPSB alone grows by more than 3000 students per year. What that means is that there are thousands more children every year, each with a smaller piece of the budget per child. 2/10
Despite the minister's spin, this is, fundamentally, a cut to the education of each and every Alberta child. The reason education budgets grow is because our population grows, inflation grows, our costs grow, and we need to keep up with more and more complex classrooms. 3/10

Hello from an Edmonton public school board meeting with a loaded agenda. 13 members of the public are scheduled to speak today. (For school board, that's loads). Link for nerds:… #abed #epsb
I'm fighting with the internet right now, so live tweeting may or may not work well today. Board chair @TrishEstabrooks kicks off the meeting noting the climate strike coming on Friday. Teens and post-sec students expected to rally at the legislature. #abed #ableg
@TrishEstabrooks Tomorrow morning, they're going to demolish part of Highlands school to make way for a new addition, and Estabrooks said the education minister will be there. (I guess I will be, too, then?) Estabrooks plans to remind minister of substantial need for new schools in #yeg #abed

Another day, another education-related announcement that shows the #UCP didn't do their homework and didn't listen to what we shared with them about the work school districts are already doing on career education and skilled trades. #abed #ableg #abvote
The NAIT Collegiate project was initiated through an agreement between #EPSB, #ECSD, and #NAIT in 2014. We've been waiting for Blatchford redevelopment and also have had to prioritize high school construction in south #yeg because space needs there are dire.
Our district, #EPSB, also already offers the Career Pathways model to all students to help them begin thinking about life after high school from day 1. At this stage, they use My Blueprint to imagine their futures.

Last year, I did an interview with @MikeTheJourno about the GSA battle in the 2017 school board election. You can read that article here:… #ableg #abvote #abed
At the end of the article, I mused: Will the UCP [United Conservative Party] include a repeal of the bill in their platform, or have we finally moved past this?”

It's quite clear now that we haven't.
And I don't really know why any party wants to re-fight this battle again during the provincial election, especially with how decisive the results were in #yegvote and how badly their proxy candidates lost on the issue.

I want to talk about covering the cost of enrolment growth through finding efficiencies in administration. Trustees think about this a lot. Here's an #epsb report on operational efficiency for 2018/19 (we do this annually). 1/13 #abed #ableg #abvote…
As you can see, we look hard at our internal practices and seek external partnerships to improve our use of operational resources, especially when it comes to district administration. It's an important bit of our fiduciary responsibility as trustees to use public funds well. 2/13
We're pretty lean in #EPSB as admin goes. While the provincial cap is set at 3.6% of district budget, we run at 3.2%. That's lower than charities (where admin spending is usually seen as efficient at 5-10%). Admittedly, different sector, but it's enlightening to compare. 3/13
