1/ It’s #ESOUsersDay, and we’d like to congratulate our colleague @cfmanara , astronomer at ESO in Garching, who has been awarded an @ERC_Research Starting Grant! #ERCStG His project will investigate the origin of the rings & asymmetric structures in protoplanetary discs. Image
@cfmanara @ERC_Research 2/ His project uses VLT instruments like X-Shooter, ESPRESSO, UVES, CRIRES+, SPHERE & MUSE as well as @almaobs The goal is to study the signatures that planets and winds leave on discs, pushing current studies to distant and massive star-forming regions and preparing for the ELT
@cfmanara @ERC_Research @almaobs 3. Also, next week we restart our Hypatia Colloquium series! On Jan 18 at 15:00 CET, Laura Sommovigo ( @scuolanormale ) will talk about the dust temperature in high-z galaxies, and Leindert Boogaard ( @mpi_astro ) will focus on gold gas at 15:30.

Extremely happy/grateful to be among the lucky ones who receive an @ERC_Research Starting Grant #ERCStG. From next year I will work on CAREER to study the career effects of vocational education, and investigate how changing labor markets affects workers’ careers. Summary ⬇️ 1/5 Image
It’s an individual grant, but many helped me (in different ways) with this proposal: Matthijs Kalmijn, @GMMKuipers, @HermanWerfhorst, @distasio_val, @BramLancee, @GijsSchumacher, Brian Burgoon, @HallstenMartin, Bea Krenn, Els den Os, many people that shared their proposal. 2/5
I particularly want to thank @sara_geven, who read the proposal multiple times and, when I was completely stuck and thought the proposal was shit, told me (multiple times) that it was a good idea. It’s a privilege to have such colleagues and work in a supportive environment. 3/5

As I'm super grateful to be receiving an #ERCStG, here is stuff that improved my grant application and interview. Hope it is helpful to others who are applying or considering to.

Possibly long thread, and all tips may not be universal - just reporting on my experience.
1/n. Early on, I reached out to folks that I know personally and who have had an ERC grant, and asked whether they'd be willing to share their applications.
1.5/n. It felt awkward but a) most people are happy to help and b) several spontaneously offered also to give me feedback on my application and/or interview if I made it there (thank you!).

The latest results of #ERCStG -call were announced yesterday erc.europa.eu/news/StG-recip… (congrats @kbkarlson @aresherman) After my own ERC in 2013 I have commented a bunch of applications, some getting funded each year. Here’s some shared characteristics of the ERC SSH successes:
1) The application needs to have a genuinely good idea as well as something truly new & ambitious, but also a strong storyline where all sub-studies are seamlessly connected. Often achieving this has required heavy editing of the original draft.
2) The applicants tend to have a clear vision where the current state of the art is in the case of the research topic in question. They are also able to pinpoint very clearly the weak spots or missing areas of the existing top-level research.
