For the next few hours I will be tweeting details from the education funding release.

I keep 5 years of GSNs (excel I maintain of key funding lines) because comparisons reveal hidden changes.

(Arab pro tip, @FarmBoy has to have a teita on staff. Good hummus.)

#onted #osstf Image
@FarmBoy Colleagues in #OSSTF, #OECTA, #ETFO & #AEFO have a clear indication of where the government stands on salaries according to these docs.

The gov has priced in 1.25% (far below inflation) for wage adjustments while still at the bargaining table.

Admin have nothing priced in. Image
@FarmBoy Not so fun fact, the Conservatives have tried to scrub the Liberal documents from all their websites. They have overhauled the Ministry of Education website and deleted all of the funding documents from before their election.

You used to be able to go many years back.

Hi, #onted. If you didn't know, there's a war on 2SLGBTQIA+ people right now - especially trans and gender diverse folks.

Some of the loudest queerphobic voices are calling for an end to 2SLGBTQIA+ teaching in schools.

I have a few thoughts on that. (1/8)
I was a queer kid in #onted once. It was at a time when we really didn't talk about 2SLGBTQIA+ people at all.

It sucked. It was a daily exercise in being told and shown that I was fundamentally broken.

Here is a blog I wrote for #ETFO on that: heartandart.ca/on-being-a-que… (2/8)
Now I'm a queer teacher in #onted.

It still sucks.

While I know now that my life is beautiful and fun and should be celebrated, I still face daily reminders that I am often seen as little more than a "controversial topic."

I wrote about that, too: heartandart.ca/on-being-a-que… (3/8)

Today I'm going to #LiveTweet my reading of "Anti-racism and Universal Design for Learning (building expressways to success)" by @FritzTesha

This book covers two very important topics all teachers should choose to bring into their classroom.

#EdChat #LitChat #UDL #Teaching Image
xi - oppressive systems of white supremacy are built into our school systems, which disadvantage the abilities for black students to learn and express themselves.
x - black students are asked to conform and comply by adhering to White standards of expression, identity, and beauty.

These systems prevent students from feeling safe and must be disrupted.

I hate to say "I told you so" - but I did. Over & over. As did a few others.

"They're planning to make virtual learning permanent while undermining Ontario’s publicly funded education system. It's a plan that they’re busy working on behind closed doors during a global pandemic."
Global #Education Coalition Members. Announced Mar 18 2020, 7 days after #WHO declared a #pandemic.

There are 175 corps/institutions now overseeing your children's #education going forward.

Text from my 10 yr old child this morning:

I hate this
I hate my life
I hate it

This is your legacy @fordnation @Sflecce @celliottability @ETFOeducators

You’ve irreparably destroyed a generation.

#onted #etfo #FireOST
To those saying blame @JustinTrudeau - believe me I do. But he’s not the CONSERVATIVE leader of ON closing the damn schools. @fordnation had a choice. This issue is on him. And I’m a single issue voter right now when it comes to my kids. I hate Trudeau but this is on him.
And to those that criticize my kids use of cell phone - honestly GFY. You have no idea why and how we use it. It is for calls and texts only and it is a way to communicate when we’re apart. Kids can also text from iPads. So seriously GFY and get off my thread.

This morning’s @MetroMorning segment with @RegionofPeel MOH Dr. Lawrence Loh.

Dr. Loh was @CBCIsmaila’s guest & spoke, among other things, about the “Herculean task facing teachers” (&, presumably, *all* #onted workers).

Re: convos w school boards about pivoting to remote learning: “They continue. Looking at data, safety precautions. Kids benefit from in-person. Longer we can keep them there, longer we’ll see overall improvements to their well-being. At this time, no decisions have been taken.”
@CBCIsmaila: “Do you think classes should go online?”

LL: “The data is clear. Out of almost 600 Peel schools, outbreaks have only been declared in just under 20 of them. Of those, we usually see a median of 2 to 3 cases.”

Starting a thread on this important event.

This year hybrid learning crept into our classrooms under the false pretence that it's a necessity right now.

Hybrid learning steals learning opportunities from students & is an unacceptable ask of educators.

Starting with a talk about how the general public doesn't have a clear idea about what's happening in schools.

This has been designed as a community town hall on purpose, bringing together all of the stakeholders. Students, parents, education workers, an open invite.
We're all here because we all want quality public education.

We learned this year that if we're going to have any success in having strong public education in Ontario it has to be a combined effort.

Last year proved that community connections are essential to protect schools.

HVAC is trending in #Ontario.

Let's clear the air, #onted.

It should be immediate #VENTILATION, with filtration improvements, for a #SaferSeptember to buy us time, and Indoor Environmental Quality improvements (#IEQ), for the long term. Not generic 'HVAC'. Not "AC".

THREAD
We say we urgently need quality HVAC in schools (we do!) but HVAC is:

(H)eating the building,
(V)entilating using outdoor air, and
(A)ir (C)onditioning,
where AC = removing heat and moisture.

ALL classrooms have H and V, though often no AC.
In old schools Ventilation was provided naturally, using a chimney effect to cause negative pressure in the school, drawing outdoor air inside. It's unreliable, so these schools were later retrofitted with exhaust fans to force the air out. (if you find unrenovated, send pics!)

Stop vilifying teachers, @Sflecce . You need us. The kids need us. The economy needs us. We will go back to work and make the best out of every obstacle thrown at us because that’s what we do. /1 #onted #firelecce @ETFOeducators #ETFO
We give up so much of our own time for kids. Stop implying the opposite. Our unions haven’t instructed us to stop anything, so you are both lying to the public and making our jobs harder by trying to turn the public against us. /2
The hardest part of our job is the disrespect that comes from some of the general public who don’t understand the actual ins and outs of our profession. I would expect the Minister of Education to respect and defend us. We are what makes our province’s education system great. /3

Now that we *know*, w certainty, that the plan is for an #UnsafeSeptember, I’m going to say it – bc I believe that I have a responsibility to:

1998, v. #PCPO govt: political protest.

I believe, *firmly*, that we need to consider having history repeat itself. #ETFO #onted #onlab
And I’ve waited on tweeting that (although, truth be told, it’s what I’ve been thinking for *weeks*) b/c, again, I believe we had a collective responsibility to wait to hear what the plan was from these Cons. #ETFO #onted #onlab
As is *always* the case, though, w retrograde, destructive govts of this ilk, they’ve shown themselves to be exactly what they are: *incapable* of truly valuing what is, arguably, our most foundational public service/institution. #ETFO #onted #onlab

To my #etfo and #onedu #onted friends. How has your board handled messaging from the MoE that report card marks should be based on learning from Term 2? 1/3
2/3 my board is effectively complying publicly with the MoE, but has decided to give them the finger privately and have teachers take all the heat (see image).#etfo #onedu #onted
3/3 My board is, at best, hesitant to allow teachers to use professional judgement. Now, when it suits them, they say, “only use Term 2 data [wink, wink, use everything].” This has created some chaos where some teachers feel, rightly, an “I” is appropriate. It’s insidious.#etfo

Ontario teachers - Please help our Ontario Nurses!

My wife is a nurse. She, and many other nurses are terrified to go to work (yet still are) because the hospitals are withholding N95 masks, saying that airborne precautions are
not necessary. Not only does this action put our healthcare workers at risk (when they're gone, who is going to do that work), it makes them potential transmitters of the disease to other patients and to their families. Imagine that feeling. ONA is currently fighting this
decision, but it would be a huge help if others could call, email and tweet our MPPs to let them know that this is unacceptable. Please share widely and inform the public. Nurses need to know that they have our as they put themselves in harms for us.

Oh you have got to be kidding me. I just can’t. This guy is insufferable. I’ll bet he’s there just to ensure they’ve all got their wills up-to-date. And to drag along your own photographer so you can leverage social and drive media sentiment, he’s just so savvy.
And this is just a another day at the office. I mean it’s been a busy week on the news as far as education goes, and I’ve heard next week should be interesting, but our little prince is also a fiddler would like to play a song while everything burns.
And because I respect the democratic process so much I just have to sit here and watch this horseshit? I suppose so, huh? That’s how civilized society works. It all the #NonnasforLecce have ever wanted. #onpoli #cdnpoli #cutshurtkids #osstf #etfo #upsidedown #shameless

Hey #OntEd, let’s do the math. We know about @Sflecce giving compensation to parents for the strikes. What does the amount to?

Minimum comp = $25/day
Grade 4-6 class size: say...26 students?
Teaching days: 194

Total paid out on avg. per class per year:
25x26x194 = $126,100.
I can’t find a solid number quoted in the news for an average #ETFO teacher salary but if we treat it in the order of the number ascribed to #OSSTF’s $92k, this amount paid out by the ministry is 37% higher than the teacher salary.
It’s #NotAboutTheMoney to the teachers - were far more concerned about as many as 10,000 caring adults being removed from schools as well as losses in arts and tech programming, since they’re always the first to get his. In the face of a tradesperson shortage, even!

First Nations organizations were consulted about the appropriateness of placing these flags here. Flags on display include those found at Takaronto City Hall, plus the flags of Nunavut and The Assembly of First Nations. -> Image

I have been around the block a few times, and carried more than a few protest signs in my 30+years as an educator. #ONEd #OSSTF #ETFO #OECTA #otffeo
If I may, I would like to share the lessons I learned along the way in the hopes that they may help a teacher facing this for the first time. #ONEd
You will hear people talk about teachers in a way that attempts to diminish and belittle the work you do. Remember the many students you positively impact every day.
