Today is possibly .@theresa_may's last day as PM, if .@BorisJohnson can command a majority (which is in some doubt...)

So it's a great opportunity to look back at some of the *highlights* of Mrs May's premiership in memes👇
13 JUL 2016: May was appointed as PM and named her Cabinet shortly thereafter, surprising many by giving 3 of the top #Brexit-related jobs to arch-brexiters Boris Johnson, David Davis & Liam Fox. Sheer folly, or genius in making them own what they'd sold? Sadly, the former😢
/1.
5 OCT 2016: With such a narrow result, the country could be forgiven for expecting May to propose a consensual solution, as Norway PM Erna Solberg had done in a similar situation. Most Remainers would've accepted #Norway.

May's #CitizensOfNowhere speech crushed all hope.

This is how the Brexit Party dominated social media ahead of the EU elections. bit.ly/2HH16O8

But on Facebook, more is going on. Here’s our investigation into the murky world of closed groups

Closed Facebook groups are private; only approved members can see their content.

On both pro and anti-Brexit groups, Newsnight found disinformation and abuse

Some posts share links to known conspiracy or alt-right websites.

For example, several groups shared content from a website, Brexit Betrayal News, with links to the QAnon conspiracy bbc.in/2Wf56hZ

The democratic swindle of the #spitzenkandidat .

"Legally, the European Council makes the proposal, and the Parliament votes on it. The Treaty does NOT say that the European Council may propose only candidates who have been presented before as spitzenkandidat. Such process would illegally limit the European Council’s power.
The European Parliament cannot claim simultaneously that it imposes the parameters applied to choose the candidates and then votes on them. There must be a balance between the two institutions and the Spitzenkandidat system does not respect it."

Why @krls & @toni_comin must be allowed to take their seats in the @Europarl_EN
"The essential step to become an MEP is to receive enough support. #Catalans understood this and delivered massive majority support to @krls, @toni_comin, @ClaraPonsati, and the whole list"
@boye_g

1
"#Spain's #SupremeCourt should suspend the national arrest warrants against @krls & @toni_comin. Both now enjoy immunity that the Supreme can't interfere with. They must decide to respect the law or not, but the little credibility they still have in Europe is at risk."
@boye_g

2
Asked whether @krls & @toni_comin must swear to uphold the Constitution in person before #Spain's Central Electoral Board before taking office, @boye_g said the rule was out-of-date, against EU law, and, if the #SupremeCourt got involved in this battle, it would surely lose.

It was a pretty impressive campaign from @hopenothate. Very targeted, very focused, designed to prevent a criminal extremist getting elected. And it worked. #EUelections2019
Carl Benjamin did enormous damage to UKIP, as did Gerard Batten and his Muslim obsessions and cosying up to extremists. They paid the price too.
Notably Farage didn’t have to talk immigration much this time, but he has an open door - ‘Brexit, betrayal etc’ - notably light on detail (no policies) and still less overall than all the pro-Remain parties. Let’s see where things go now...

Citizen K on

#EuropeanElectionResults :

- Mainstream politics will continue to lose ground unless they will renew & restructure themselves by organisational architecture, people, messages, technology.

- Leaning toward extremists in messaging will only benefit the extremists.
Citizen K comments on #EuropeanElectionResults :

- 51% turnout may look promising but deserves a deeper analysis.

- Whose votes increased most? Therefore who mobilized her voters more..

Based on these results, it is hard to say the champion of this is the mainstream politics..
Citizen K on #EuropeanElectionResults :

- Countries who joined the EU after 2004 are the countries with least participation Slovakia, Czechia, Croatia, Bulgaria..

- Alarming for the success rate of European integration, power of European dream.

On #Brexit, these #EUelections2019 show that, if a political party stands in the middle of the road, it gets squashed. That‘s what I predicted when I resigned from Government last year. And it’s what has happened to @Conservatives and @UKLabour
So what next? If the purpose of government is to follow the will of the people (at any cost), the only politically viable Brexit is a hard one (WTO etc). But neither major political party will get a Westminster majority by delivering Hard Brexit without explicit public consent
And forget any soft Brexit. It’s not politically viable (for the record, I’ve always held that it’s the worst of both worlds) and anyone thinking we get further concessions from the @EU_Commission by playing hardball is living in cuckoo land. The WA is it, take it or leave it

1) 4 authentic successful, coherent pro Remain voices
#EUelections2019

In some ways this is the best outcome for Remain & #FinalSay, because the Labour/Tory #Brexit conspiracy is broken & LDs, Greens, SNP & PC can emerge with an unambiguous message - no #Brexit is a good Brexit
2) Remain has had since day 1 a single overriding barrier - the media, especially the BBC, have overwhelmingly favoured Farage, the Tories & Labour, and all 3 are on the same #Brexit side, that Brexit could be pain free, cost free, jobs first if it was just done properly
3) are all Farage's supporters no deal zealots? Of course not, they largely believe, like the Tories, that stropping off will force the EU27 to a deal.

Labour believes that kind words and the power of magic grandpa will do the same thing

"I can do #Brexit better than you can"

Important result that Tories lost twice as many seats to #Remain parties than #BrexitParty. BXP swapped for 23 UKIP and gained extra 5 to get 28. Tories lost 15 seats - 5 to BXP and 10 to Remain.
#EUelections2019 #EP2019
Conservative MPs must be aware that it's too late for new members to join & vote in #ToryLeadershipContest. However, if a general election is coming, there will probably be time to take part in selections/deselections of MP. This may be by #Remain voters.
#EUelections2019
6M plus signed a petition to revoke Article 50. If 2.5% of them joined the Conservatives, then they would be likely bigger than the current membership. Won't be enough time for #ToryLeadership in the #ToryLeadershipContest but possibly enough time before any General Election.

What are the major takes of #EUelections2019 ? (thread) 1/7

“The 2019 EU elections will come down in history as giving birth to an embryonic form of EU political space" #EUelections2019
“The record-high turn-out across the continent proves that these elections were felt differently. The unfolding of Brexit as well as unprecedented mobilization by both political parties & civil society ahead of the vote contributed to make these elections more salient" 2/7 #EU
“While these #EUelections seemingly remained a largely domestic affair, with national referenda on governing parties, in countries such as France, Italy and Greece, these elections mark the birth of a more political Europe” 3/7 #EUelections2019

I’m reporting from City Hall this evening for @LBC where we expect to get the #EUelections2019 results in the next few hours.

Turnout in the capital is much higher than in previous years - 41.3% - a good sign for the Remain-backing parties. Image
Things to watch out for:
Labour - last time Labour's best region was London, sending four MEPs to Europe from the Capital. How many can they hold - will Remaimers just throw their weight behind the LibDems / Greens / ChangeUK ?
UKIP - UKIP have only one MEP from London, but it's their leader Gerard Batten. Could he lose his seat tonight with Leave votes moving to the Brexit Party?

Facebook is continuing to take down pages based on @Avaaz research, removing another 55 new pages with a total of more than 3 million followers in the last couple of days news.vice.com/en_us/article/…
According to @Avaaz, 26% of people have seen fake news every single day over the past year. "These results are frightening. Disinformation networks are spreading hate and anger to millions of Europeans every single day,” @E_Campaigning said.

Moreover, when combined with UKIP's share of voice the hard Brexit parties combined got nearly 2/3 of the total share of voice. UKIP even pushed Labour into third place for their total number of shares during the #EUelections2019 period.
The Brexit party, the DUP and UKIP combined also produced 34% of all content posts from all the major political parties combined - showing they were posting significant amounts of content (especially UKIP).

Want to do your bit to #StopBrexit at the #EUelections2019 ?
Then your best bet is to vote for an unashamedly pro-Remain party, and use your vote tactically to maximise the chances of pro-Remain MEPs getting in.
This table summarises the most effective way to vote in each region.
To find out more about these recommendations, you can download the detailed version of my tactical voting guide as a PDF from the link below. It contains a fuller explanation of the choices in each region.

Of course, if you can persuade others who might not have voted to go and vote too (maybe go with friends, encourage your family to make an effort, or offer to drive a colleague to the polling station) that's a super effective tactic to boost the pro-Remain vote. Every vote helps!

#EUelections2019 are taking place in the UK today and technically that’s all I’m really supposed to say about them...save for the fact that these are very important elections so make sure you take part (and let me know how busy your polling station is....)
The fact that these elections are taking place at all is extraordinary historic. Use your voice.
And if you’re struggling to vote, for whatever reason, let me know about that as well.

1 #EUelections a message to UK voters from Germany.

For anyone who actually cares about what happens to #Europe & the world:
the #EUelection is NOT A PROXY 2ND REFERENDUM.

Your vote will NOT deliver #Brexit / stop Brexit.
The EU Parliament does NOT have these powers.

THREAD👇
2 But your vote in the #EUelection2019 DOES have real-world consequences.

Right now, under the Spitzenkandidat system, the EPP's #ManfredWeber, of the right-wing anti-immigrant pro-backroom-lobby Bavarian CSU - is on course to become the next EU Commission president. 😖
3 If #ManfredWeber becomes Commission president, it's curtains for any chance of saving the world from #ClimateCollapse.

His CSU are way to the right of Merkel - & literally in the pocket of the German auto industry.

For good measure, Weber is also mates with #ViktorOrban 🤢

Vital to remember that, even if May’s gone as PM by tonight, we’d still have same Cabinet that was prepared to back her #BrexitBetrayal at every stage, from #Chequers onwards.
Her going is only the pre-condition for the change that's needed: it *isn't* the change by itself.
Even if May is no longer PM by tomorrow morning, that's still no reason to vote @Conservatives in #EUElections2019.
Most of the Cabinet/Govt aren't ditching her b/c they violently disagree with her BRINO, only b/c they're worried she'll get them thrashed by the @brexitparty_uk.
@brexitparty_uk Even if May gone, we almost certainly still have ardent Remainer Lidington as stopgap Acting PM, + May-ite Brexit-as-damage-limitation, i.e., soft as possible, still dominant in Cabinet, several of whom would be vying for PM.
Zero reason not to still vote for the @brexitparty_uk.
