Looking at the numbers prior to @vonderleyen approval tomorrow, and in light of her letters to @TheProgressives and @RenewEurope I reckon she is likely to get through...
She needs 376 votes to be approved

EPP + S&D + Renew Europe have 443

There are 2 factors that are important here - will she have enough support to be approved per se? And does she have enough support to be approved without Fidesz, PiS, Lega etc.?
EPP (-Fidesz) + S&D + Renew Europe have 434

Knock off the 16 German SPD MEPs (SPD say they oppose her) and you still have 418

That means you need 42 further MEPs from S&D and Renew to vote against her... And Renew didn't back the Spitz process properly anyway.

#EPlenary #PlenoPE

Confused about timelines for #EUTopJobs and #Brexit?

Try this, which came off the back of this post about @vonderleyen

blogs.surrey.ac.uk/politics/2019/…

@UKandEU
Key point to take away is that EU jobs are filled immediately, but with enough delay that they don't really impact on Brexit ahead of the 31 October deadline
And here with the UK timeline too: basically one side's done before the summer, the other after (and quite a lot after)

1.Setting the record straight on #EUTopJobs & why #Spitzenkandidaten @ManfredWeber @TimmermansEU and @vestager were blocked for @EU_Commission President. Lots of spin out there that needs to be countered, so here is a THREAD. 👇
2. Today some @florianeder & @zoyashef wrote of Weber & Timmermans being blocked by an "alliance consisting of the Visegrád 4, Italy and the French Republic." Similarly @ManfredWeber tried to claim he was the victim of a "Macron-Orban axis" This is wrong.
3. @ManfredWeber was blocked already 2 weeks ago by Socialists & Liberals in European Parliament- including by Macron's people: politico.eu/article/libera… One key reason Orbán was deemed unacceptable (incl by Macron) was his long-record of enabling the authoritarian Orbán regime.

So what to make of the #EUTopJobs decision?

1/
Most important is that a decision exists at all: if EP wasn't voting tomorrow, easy to imagine another delay, given fissures

2/
However the flip of this is that is perhaps precisely because of looming EP vote that choices were made: an air of 'make it stop' about it all

The breakdown of MEPs, as at today's opening plenary

1/
Key points to note:
- EPP & S&D no longer hold overall majority (only 44%);
- Renew (ex-ALDE) have had a big boost as third-largest group;
- Failure of BXP to form group leaves a big pile of NIs to sort themselves out in coming days/weeks;
