It is not okay for a DfE funded website to list an incorrect set of 'subjects' for #EYFS. The *areas of learning* are set out in the *Statutory Framework*. Please retweet if you would like @OakNational to correct this. Image
Thanks to everyone who has retweeted this. I'm really hoping that @OakNational will notice my message in their notifications and get this sorted because lots of us have asked politely many times. #RespectEYFS
I've been getting a bit of kick back for calling this out so publicly but the thing is lots of us have been trying quietly to get this resolved for years. Here I am asking politely in 2020. ⬇️

I think I've figured out why @Ofstednews is in such a mess around curriculum in the early years. The problem is all about their definition of learning. #thread 1/n 🧵 ⬇️
They want to believe that learning is about memorising a linear sequence of 'knowledge items' so they can say that 'progression' is about moving along that line. ('Curriculum is the progression model'). 2/n ⬇️
But learning in the early years definitely doesn't work like that. It's about care and development, not just about subject-based learning. Child development isn't linear, nor is it just about memory. 3/n ⬇️

So, this week we're not using any tablets in nursery to record any photos or observations.
It was my idea, just so we can get back to connecting with the children and their play.

A week long thread (if I remember!)

#teamearlychildhood #eyfs
How am I feeling?
Excited... anxious... how will staff manage...what will we learn as a team?

We're writing our thoughts at the start of the week and reflecting as we go.

Wish us luck!
Lunchtime... I've gone to grab my tablet so many times, but it's made me think why? Chn were using wool to trap animals but what did I see them doing? They've done it before. There was nothing new to observe. They ended the game as quickly as it started.

The #worldwildlifeday2021 theme is Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals 1, 12, 13 and 15. So, what are the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) & how can children begin to learn about them & get involved ?
allaboardforglobalgoals.com is easy & fun to follow for our smallest of people #EYFS. Early childhood is the perfect stage to introduce the core concepts of what it means to be a global citizen. For our reception & KS1 children please take a look at this fabulous free resource
issuu.com/unpublications… Storytelling is a powerful communications tool and helps children remember lessons and virtues that they will use in everyday life. The idea is to simplify the lessons of the (SDGs) so young children can relate to – and better understand – the SDGs.

I'm going to spend some of today reading the new #DevelopmentMatters in depth and tweeting some extracts/questions. Currently pondering this bit - how do we define "high-quality play"?
Sitting here with copies of the old and new versions of #DevelopmentMatters in front of me. One obvious observation is that the old version feels much easier to 'dip in and out' of, because of the way that it's structured.
I think that diagrams like this, from the front of the old #DevelopmentMatters are really useful in helping people conceptualise how it all hangs together in #EYFS.

Whether you’re remaining, returning or starting in your Reception class this academic year, we have got a thread to signpost some of our free EYFS maths resources available…

#primarymaths #NQT #edutwitter #backtoschool #mathschat #EYFS
This blog examines a range of potential mathematical opportunities within play including subitising, counting, comparing, classifying and regrouping: hertsforlearning.co.uk/blog/lets-talk…
This video is great for Reception & KS1 alike to explore adding one more and finding one less to a range of numbers. Opportunities to explore number magnitude, order of numbers & practise lots of vocabulary.

Currently doing a lot of reading about recent research into spatial reasoning; Mulligan (2020), Resnick (2020), Verdine (2014), Gilligan (2017) and more (prep for my @NAMA_UK workshop in September) from age 3 up.
The 2020 #EYFS Framework has removed this as an ELG (rant coming)>
2>>
and has only ONE SENTENCE on shape space and measures in the educational programme. Please dont go telling me that "the curriculum is more than the ELGs" and that this is adequate attention paid to spatial reasoning in this document.
It plainly isn't.
>>
3/3>>
Research is unequivocal as to the influence of early spatial reasoning teaching on later, wider mathematical achievement and yet we have a bloody ELG on automatic recall - which is NOT SUPPORTED BY RESEARCH AT ALL.

An evidence-informed #EYFS.
My arse.
