The last time I visited #China, I knew it would be the last time. 5 minutes after sitting down with a #Uyghur friend, she was called by her cadre 'minder' questioning her why she was talking to a foreigner. Like so many, we've never heard from her again.
I made the choice not to return as a researcher because it endangers people. Or you can go back but you must construct your research in a way that the Chinese government approves and ignore people like my friend who has disappeared. And write about #China like it never happened.
That research access is based on approving or refusing to challenge the deadly lies which the government tells. When I worked in #China, it was clear many people maintain that access despite being racist towards Chinese people. This has nothing to do with respect for China.

Video: A scene of “mass forced weddings” in which Uyghur girls were forced to marry Han Chinese men. Most unmarried Uyghur girls are to save either themselves—For them this is the only way to get a job & not end up in jails/camps/forced-labor factories—or save their parents— 1/
2/ If they say “No” for such forced marriages, both these girls & parents go to concentration camps or jails. This is another dimension of #UyghurGenocide not mentioned much in western media.

I've reviewed the resources @CodePink recommends as part of its #ChinaIsNotOurEnemy campaign regarding #Xinjiang #Uyghurs. codepink.org/china_faq
These resources promote a cultural response to alleged threat of #terrorism from #EastTurkistan/#Xinjiang, and I'm not sure if @CodePink would also approve of governments like #UK #USA #Belgium #France similarly "reeducating" their Muslim minority populations.
Aside from the condescension in the Chinese government documents cited, there is all but a total embrace of pre-crime activities à la Philip K. Dick's "The Minority Report." independent.co.uk/arts-entertain…

Second set of hearings of the @TribunalUyghur are about to start!

We will be live-tweeting the hearings in this thread ⬇️ Image
Geoffrey Nice Qc opens the tribunal:

“For a right to be universal, it is a right that has to be enjoyed anywhere in the world. And a right always has a duty.”
First fact witness is Australian-Uyghur @Mehray_T testifying on behalf of her husband who was arrested and detained in 2017.

““[My husband] was in shock, to be frank. Even though he was released—they said he had graduated—he never felt safe.” Image

The @Europarl_EN held a debate about the situation in #EastTurkistan, hours after Ilham Tohti was honoured with the #SakharovPrize.

EU High Rep for Foreign Affairs @JosepBorrellF spoke first, noting the EU's deep concern & the active role it has played in addressing the issue.
@Europarl_EN @JosepBorrellF "We ask China to allow access to these camps and allow those detained to be released. They have been detained simply for following their religious beliefs or expressing their opinions."

- MEP Isabel Wiseler-Lima @iwiseler
@Europarl_EN @JosepBorrellF @iwiseler “All mass detention centres must be shut and perpetrators of the massive human rights abuses must be brought to justice. We also expect that the EU is ready to adopt targeted sanctions against those responsible.”
