🚨Paper Alert🚨

Marine protected areas #MPAs are increasingly promoted as #ocean-based #solution to #ClimateChange, but their contribution to climate change #adaptation and #mitigation remains contentious. Our meta-analysis of 22,403 papers brings clarity. Link below.

🧵(1/17)
🙈Spoiler alert🙉

#FullyProtected #MPAs can can significantly enhance:

©️ carbon sequestration
🌊 coastal protection
🐟 biodiversity
🐡 reproductive capacity of marine organisms
🎣 fishers’ catch
💰 fishers’ income

🧵(2/17)
We identified the potential “climate pathways” through which #MPAs could contribute to #ClimateChange #mitigation and #adaptation. First along mitigation and adaptation dimensions, and then distinguishing among #ecological and #social dimensions of adaptation.

Agri culture in India involved raising livestock to support farming, for milk and meat, and also to support the leather industry. It has evolved over millennia and weathered quite a variety of challenges: socio-political and environmental. 1/15
Caste was exploited. In post independent India it was eminently possible to attack caste based occupation & discrimination in farming and livestock rearing, without destroying millennia old knowledge that constituted agriculture. The opportunity was forfeited. 2/15
First by the Congress pandering to upper caste pressures, and now BJP, have targeted livestock rearing and turned the farms and livestock into a battle of political ideologies. 3/15

I'm hugely grateful to fellow psychiatrists who see #climate and #ecological crisis for what it is: the greatest mental health crisis of the age...
From air pollution linked to dementia, PTSD after flooding, suicide risk in extreme heat and the immense psychological impact of famine, conflict, social breakdown, displacement and betrayal by govts. The literal end of the world...
Collective suicide according to UN sec gen @antonioguterres More accurately mass murder. I'm constantly shocked that anyone is talking about anything else.

"The Dry" could have been just another murder mystery film, but what made it interesting was how it weaved in the #ecological crisis in #Australia - #bushfires & #droughts - with the social crisis in #rural farming communities & small towns.
The swirling dust devils, the dried up #rivers & creeks, correlates with a societal collapse. The washing of a car with waste #water, the red crud that emerges out of shower heads, all narrating how a #rain starved society has hit its #ecological limit.
It is also about the decline of the farming community in #Australia. A telling comment in the film - an old #farmer worrying about how his #land will be tilled after he is gone: "Farms with no people. Imagine that. No need for towns. No need for any of us."

🚨New in @PNASNews! We demonstrate that aquatic #biodiversity directly benefits humanity via nutritional benefits of #seafood.

We answer one of the most pressing questions in ecology:

Does biodiversity per se (species richness and ecological functional diversity), distinct from the identities and abundance of species enhance human well-being?

With #Covid19 as the ultimate catalyst, the push is on to implement the financialization of nature.

The Natural Capital Coalition is made up of approx. 300 orgs/corps while working w/ thousands. Partners include #CocaCola, #Shell, #Walmart.

Those with money will own #nature.
Those w/ $ will own #nature.

The very corporations that have brought us to the precipice of #ecological #collapse - will now be appointed as the new stewards of nature. This has been dubbed (#XR Business - Elkington/Volans) as the new biosphere economy.

#NewDealForNature
Let's take a look at how #Covid19 has been successfully leveraged (both fear & distraction) in order to aid the largest transformation of the global economic system in modern history. Assigning monetary value to nature ("natural capital") will replace #GDP.

As promised to @g_m_hodgson & @ingridharvold I got myself a copy of Hodgson’s book e-elgar.com/shop/gbp/is-th…. It’s hard 2 do justice in a thread to the many arguments he makes, but I’ll try to engage. 1/
Among other things, a) Hodgson correctly points out that lack of raison d’etre 4 hetecon may be responsible 4 its marginalization. I also agree that b) agreement on a “core” among hetecons would be desirable. He also notes c) general neglect of micro (I’ll return 2 this). 2/
Reviewing various attempts at self-definition of heterodoxy, Hodgson looks at the late Fred Lee’s “political” project of gathering anti-capitalist economists under the heterodox umbrella as prone to failure; & Tony Lawson’s dichotomy b/w “open” and “closed” systems... 3/

Shills for "The Future We Choose" - round up #2.

Not a coincidence. The majority of those promoting this book are both white & wealthy. #Ecological crisis will never be resolved by the ruling classes. It cannot be resolved within the same economic system that created it.
The Guardian rolls out the red carpet for "The Future We Choose". Par for the capitalist course.

As the former CEO of #WeMeanBusiness, recently appointed by the UK Govt as the High Level Climate Action Champion for UN climate talks, #COP26, of course Nigel Topping is excited.
"It's about human lives"

This anthropocentric ideology appears to be an infectious disease amongst the "enlightened eco-capitalists". It demonstrates that they are absolutely disconnected from the natural world.

#TheFutureTheyChoose will reboot the system destroying Earth.

My previous threads on #qualitative #interviewing referred mainly to one-to-one, semi-structured interviews. Research interviews, however, can be conducted in more than one way. #1 @AcademicChatter #phdchat #QualitativeResearch
@AcademicChatter In this thread, some different ways to conduct interviews are discussed, so have a look and see whether a different format could help answer your research question better. #2
@AcademicChatter The social research literature categorises research interviews roughly into #structured, semi-structured, and unstructured interviews based on the degree of #planning or preparation from the interviewer’s side and the #leeway available for participants in their responses. #3

Not a rocket science. Plain and simple.

Do not encroach natural way of #rivers. Go for river flood zoning. Do not hamper #ecological flow.

#River will provide all you need, Otherwise it will be a disaster !!
What is river flood zoning ?
Here land use planning is done according to the potential of a river for flooding. Prohibited zone and Regulated zone are demarcated. Infra development is done according to risk assessment floods can cause.
- In prohibited zone no infra is created.
- in regulated zone infra like playground, parks etc can be created, which needs less intervention. Can be vacated immediately.
- no habitation in flood zones.

2019 is the 50th edition of the #SIPRIYearbook. Join SIPRI as we celebrate the occasion with a 50-day countdown and share the history of the Yearbook over the past 50 years. Watch the introductory video with SIPRI Director @dansmith2020:
The first #SIPRIYearbook was published in 1969 with the aim ‘to produce a factual and balanced account of a controversial subject—the arms race and attempts to stop it’. The rise in world military spending and disarmament efforts, including the #NPT, take central focus.
'In whatever way the nuclear situation is examined, the inescapable feature is what enormous quantities of weapons have been amassed' – Movement towards a first-strike capability by the #US and #USSR, the #SALT talks and European security were a focus of the 1970 #SIPRIYearbook.
