Hey 👋 #educators and defenders of #publicschools:

Got an angry #MAGA family relative at your #Thanksgiving 🦃 table who likes to yell at you about #publiceducation?

Here’s a short “well actually” sheet to 👏 back:
@Network4pubEd @NPEaction @PV4PS
1/
“I’m sick of just throwing money at #schools that just waste it!”

Well, actually, Aunt Betsy, investing in #publiceducation is one of the best things taxpayers can do—more $$, better outcomes. @KiraboJackson
chalkbeat.org/2018/12/17/211…

2/
“And all this crime you damn liberals have going around too!”

Well, actually, spending more $$ on #schools helps reduce long term #crime rates too! @fordschool @BrittanyEdPol @JasonBaron4

I always go back to @matt_barnum on this, who said we need to take seriously the alarm from school leaders even as we explore the mismatch with admin data.

1/
It’s silly to argue that admin data show anything like a crisis on teacher exits. Those data don’t.

But I’m surprised that with advent of mixed methods in policy research more folks aren’t looking for ways to join both #educators perspectives and admin data.

2/
I suspect some of this comes down to the same old difference in the way economists study data without always interrogating sources.

This piece is fine for what it is. What it and others are understating or flat out missing is the link between religious fanaticism and anti-democratic anti-election white supremacism in the school #privatization push
nytimes.com/2022/09/01/opi…
2/
To give serious space to people like DeAngelis (a ~30 yo lobbyist-w/PhD) to give “thoughts” is appropriate for what the #vouchers movement is but to quote him intellectually rather than a political actor misses the role rightwing think-tanks have played in election denialism
3/
It’s esp problematic given the only real offset to #DeVos/DeAngelis is Mann himself who’s been dead since 1859 and isn’t even directly quoted at that.

Tomorrow is the start of the new term and you need to refresh your Twitter feed for educational content. You’re fed up with seeing kitty pictures, rumours about who’s dating whom and celebrity navel-gazing.
#Thread #Educators
If you don’t find any educational content on Twitter, what about in Google? Many educators use it to advertise their courses or programmes so there may be something useful in Google searches too.
But it can take ages to dedicate all that time searching through the Google results when you’ve got lesson plans to prepare and presentations to give.

I keep thinking of the unpaid labours of women.

Today Jason Schilling of the ATA demanded the province fund the contact tracing they demand from schools. Educators (not just teachers) are stretched very thin right now. #ableg #yyc #teachers #educators #nurses #alberta
Spending time on the phone daily, and affirming diligent contact tracing, for the sake of everyone’s health, takes a toll, considering all of their duties in addition. Going online, getting subs, organizing and reorganizing cohorts and busses and seating.
This is all necessary - and I e have to guide the kids through these transitions as safely as possible.
And today - A child died of Covid in Alberta.
I bet a lot of women cared for this child. Teaching is predominately a female profession. So is nursing, and supplemental and

A few days back I held a @joinClubhouse conversation with an interesting gathering of #mathematics teachers and other #educators, and I did talk about #ethnomathematics.
The conversation generated a heated debate among them.
A thread #Culture #Maths #KnowledgeProduction
In the discussion, I also mentioned African Humanism as new enlightenment based on the endogenous & indigenous techniques and methods to generate knowledge in the #GlobalSouth.
Someone was so upset and felt attacked by this.
Others by my expression #decolonize the #decolonization
My point was and still remains not necessarily to antagonize the Western way of knowledge production but put aside and to mainstream our traditional techniques that fallen in disuse and take into formal education as another way of producing knowledge.

The most menacing aspect of #StandardizedTesting is the way it trains kids to fear making mistakes by labeling & shaming. Misunderstandings should be opportunities for breakthroughs in comprehension, but the tests teach that miscalculations are perverse transgressions.
Playwright Oscar Wilde made a magnificent observation in his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" when he wrote, “Most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes.”
Oscar Wilde understood that creativity cannot exist without mistakes, & without creativity life lacks meaning. Kids live in fear of getting low test scores because they are used to label & shame at best—& sometimes carry extreme high stakes (closing schools, denying graduation).

I'll double-down on my unpopular opinion on the "all-teachers-are-heroes" narrative.

I like heroes who don't let our kids rank 25th in the world on math, science and reading.

Earn your moniker.

#education #educators #school
To the HEROES killing standardized tests:
Instead of fixing kids' performance, WE SEE YOU burying measures of your massive failures!

I want 1000X MORE standardized STEM tests!
Get to #1, then you losers can improvise. Even Picasso had to draw fruit first.
And we don't need more arts & crafts. Americans will be plenty creative on our own.

Teach STEM. That's it.

If you can't, you're a babysitter. And you need to step aside.

"Educators" have failed this country. Now we need to find & mobilize real teachers.

Just got my ARC’s for THIS IS A SEAHORSE! (@AlbertWhitman, 2020) Since people seem curious about the process of making a picture book, I figured I'd write up a THREAD breaking down the choices I made when designing the first book in this series, THIS IS A SEA COW (2019).
1/19
First, a quick jump back in time to 2015 when I attended my first @SCBWI conference. @dsantat spoke about book design. “Form follows function.” It was a lesson that really resonated with me and I became determined to apply what I’d learned to the dummy I was working on.
2/19
That dummy would become my first published book, THIS IS A SEA COW (@AlbertWhitman, 2019).

On Sunday evenings I often join with hundreds of #educators in #AussieEd another lively group (mostly K12) sharing in #CPD through chats on Twitter & ‘meet’ new people every week

Thread on being told we must policing our language skillz or it will cost us our voice.

A huge discussion broke out on the Idle No More OFFICIAL Facebook page today. An 'Ally' decided it was finally time to let us all know that after reading our comments on that page, ...2/
...it was time we heard that unless we start learning how to employ proper English most of our allies will simply, summarily dismiss our efforts. He really felt he was doing us a favor.

When he received the pushback he so earned, the number of other 'allies' on that page .../3
... who apparently feel the same way, chirped up in support & also advised us this was not racist in any way - just a fact of life. It was clear they honestly believed that, & they clung to conclusion despite some pretty clear education from those of us who are aware of ...4/
