Can't wait to see this story splashed across the front page of the RW papers. 🙃

"One of the biggest donors to 🇬🇧 Conservative Party is suspected of secretly funneling 100s of 1000s of $$$ to the party from a Russian account".

"The donation, of $630,225, was made in February 2018 in the name of Ehud Sheleg, a wealthy London art dealer who was most recently the Conservative Party’s treasurer."

2.
"But docs filed with the authorities last year...say the money originated in a Russian account of Mr. Sheleg’s father-in-law, Sergei Kopytov, who was once a senior politician in the previous pro-Kremlin govt of 🇺🇦. He now owns real estate & hotel businesses in Crimea & 🇷🇺."

🚨 The #ElectionsBill that undermines Elections and Democracy

What has the government been up to sneakily? 🧐

A THREAD.

Elections bill was supposed to look after the “administration and conduct of elections” & strengthen “the integrity of the electoral process”. But this Bill (now Act) undermines both the Electoral Commission that looks after this process & principles of free & fair elections /2
After going through the Commons, the controversial bill reached the Lords. On Monday, Lords voted to remove some of the provisions in the bill that were deemed harmful and which undermined the Electoral Commission’s independence. /3

The #ElectionsBill, which passed last night, will make it harder to vote for millions, while making it easier for the government to control the Electoral Commission. It’s a travesty that parliamentarians passed a Bill that erodes our precious democracy. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…
The law will only make it harder for some people - older people can use bus passes and 60+ Oyster cards as valid forms of ID - but young people’s railcards, and student Oyster cards will not be permitted. bigissue.com/news/politics/…
The government overrode a compromise amendment, suggested by a Conservative Peer, that would have expanded the list of acceptable IDs - instead they adopted their own arbitrary and restrictive list.

Lord Judge welcomes Gvt’s overtures on Electoral Commission but says still doesn’t address the independence or perceived independence of the regulator. #ElectionsBill

Only 35 (21%) of @LabourLordsUK voted in favour of this last attempt - by one of their own, Shami Chakrabarti - to get respect for Refugee Conv into this Bill, while @LibDemLords with only half their numbers fielded 72 (87% of us) in favour. If they’d matched us, we’d have won.
And on the #ElectionsBill, only 67 (40% of their 167) @LabourLordsUK voted for Lord Judge’s amendment to uphold @ElectoralCommUK independence while 70 (84% of our @LibDemLords 83) did so.
Again, if they’d voted in same proportion as us, we’d have won - easily.
If you get the sense that I’m cross as hell at Labour tonight, you’d be right. So much opposition, xbench - & even backbench Tory - effort has been put into fighting these nasty Bills, but @LabourLordsUK throw in the towel (presumably under Starmer’s orders) on Ref Conv & EC ind

🚨THIS IS A DEMOCRATIC EMERGENCY🚨
The government’s utterly terrifying Elections Bill is back in parliament today. Here’s everything you need to know about the bill and the voting tonight. 🧵1/15
Along with the Policing Bill, Borders Bill, changes to both Judicial Review and the Official Secrets Act, the #ElectionsBill is part of the government’s attack on democracy and accountability in the UK.

With it they want to rig elections in their favour. 2/15
Working with peers and MPs, we’ve helped force the government into major concessions on the bill - including removing proposals that would have given ministers the power to ban campaigners they don’t like during elections. 3/15

Good evening everyone! The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill (aka the #PolicingBill) is back in the Lords this evening. We understand that many Lords are planning to insist on noise a third time.

Live tweets will be on this thread below!
Possibly only a few minutes more until the #PolicingBill is up! There’s a division on the Health and Care Bill, and I think I just saw the Minister sit down.
Apologies, there’s a second division on the Health and Care Bill. Another ten minute division.

A thread 🧵 on the #ElectionsBill. Where are we at?
A reminder, this is (mostly) a deeply authoritarian Bill representing a huge power grab by the Cons. And I mean huge. Unamended, it gives Ministers unprecedented powers and basically ends free and fair elections in the U.K. It’s not hyperbole to say that.
Just listen back to Conservative and cross bench peer speeches in the HoL debate yesterday. No other decent democracy has Gvt interference in elections and over the regulator. I can’t stress enough how bad this Bill is.

Peers have voted by a majority of 66 to remove clauses from the #ElectionsBill that would fetter the independence of the Electoral Commission. Ten Conservatives defied the party whip.

The matter now returns to the Commons. Here are key points for MPs to consider. 1/
The relevant Commons committee - @CommonsPACAC - strongly supports the removal of these clauses. By limiting the Commission's independence, it says, they pose 'an unacceptable risk to the functioning of our democracy'. 2/

Elections experts are united in opposing the clauses. PACAC said it had 'not received any written submissions or oral evidence to this inquiry supporting the proposed Strategy and Policy Statement'.

The letter I co-signed in last week's @thetimes reaffirms this. 3/

Lord Judge making a very eloquent and powerful speech in HoL right now on the Elections Bill clauses that will defang the independent elections watchdog and give even more powers to ministers.
And now Lord Blunkett stands up to back Judge. Reminds HoL that when New Labour had an even bigger majority than Johnson has now, they didn't abuse that power to be able to mark their own homework at election time.
Reminds the House that there is no mandate for removing independence of the Electoral Commission given it wasn't in the Conservative Party manifesto

Good afternoon all! The #PolicingBill is back in the Commons this afternoon. There are two statements ahead of the Bill, so it may be up to another hour. This is the thread in which we will follow the Bill.
At the moment we are still listening to a statement on Ukraine. It will be followed by a statement on Football Governance. The #PolicingBill will follow.
In the Lords, Report Stage for the #ElectionsBill has started.

So, the government just made you use FPTP more. What happened, and what's next, and a few silver linings @MakeVotesMatter @DemDefCoalition (1/9)
An amendment came to the #ElectionsBill tonight to stop the government's plan to impose FPTP on mayoral/PCC elections.

It didn't pass, by a tiny margin! We lost a few Peers who had voted for other amendments, particularly due to the vote's timing (2/9)

Does it suck, yes! But lots of great things happened:

First, the Labour Party came out strongly against more FPTP, with the frontbench teams in both houses voting against.

Many thanks to @CatSmithMP, @AlexNorrisNN and @SueHayman1 for leading on this.

The #ElectionsBill is having its second reading in the House of Lords today - there is a lot wrong with this bill, from spending millions to make it harder to vote, to reducing the independence of our Electoral Commission.
Around 2.1 million people lack the necessary identification for their voter ID scheme, according to the government’s own research. Checking millions of documents and supplying ID will cost up to £180 million a decade electoral-reform.org.uk/expensive-vote…
Poll workers will have the power to turn voters away if they think an old photo doesn't look enough like them. Unlike border police, poll workers are not specially trained to do this sort of work. Growing a beard or getting a bold haircut shouldn't disenfranchise you.
