I’ve become very adverse to “charge” & “discharge” in #somatic language b/c of the misappropriation by the #trauma workshops merchants

But this is what it means 👇🏼
“If we speak of charge and discharge in Body Psychotherapy we refer to changing the arousal dimension of the core affect. Working with charge and discharge is independent of the emotional category that we awaken or calm by provoking or soothing arousal.” - Ulfried Geuter and… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
In other words …

“emotion”

as a “somatic experience” (ignore the brand)

is a kinesthetic, experiential occurrence that impacts how bodies animate, express, dampen, numb, dissociate, etc

a bit more about #somatic #internalization
... particularly my "housed in the body" phrasing 👇
I know there is concern with "stored emotions in the body" language

I share that concern

but let's unpack what this means ...
my POV

the impact & expression of emotion is #embodied

there is simply no other way to experience #emotion

there is wide, wide diversity in each individual's expression and experience of #emotion

Interested in rubber hand illusion and #embodiment? We’ve been looking at how subjective measures of ownership in RHI are confounded by suggestion effects. New pre-print on psyArXiv! (1/6) psyarxiv.com/uhdzs
Checkout #raincloudplot (petit prince plots?) in Fig. 4 – subjective ownership ratings strongly depend on whether participants are higher or lower in trait phenomenological control @micahgallen (2/6) Image
We ran several simulations of RHI experiments using a previously published large dataset and manipulated how many participants in a given experiment sample were above or below median trait phenom. control (3/6)

Thread.

Today a famous quote from Lucy Suchman, and also some later reflection of herself on this passage from her book "Plans and Situated Actions" (1987).

It deals with the concept of (mental) plans for action.

The quote goes like this:
"the efficiency of plans as representations comes precisely
from the fact that they do not represent those practices and circumstances
in all of their concrete detail.
So, for example, in planning to
run a series of rapids in a canoe, one is very likely to sit for a while
above the falls and plan one’s descent.
