This article titled "I took £10 to Iceland to feed a family for a week and nearly pulled it off" from @kentlivenews is a joke, at the expense of low income families and that joke just ran aground here. 🧵

How dare you @kentlivenews?

What a sanctimonious, patronising and offensive false equivalence, you horrible horrible little man @AdamMcGroarty.

Some of us like nice things, but the poor eat any old thing if it's cheap enough, what japes.

Cc. @IcelandFoods - the opposite of quality, are you?
If this could sound any more Colonial White-Saviour I don't know how.

How brave, our hero, venturing forth into the wilderness of... *Checks notes* how 14 million people live.

Every era has its prisoners.

Ours, the children in poverty, like caged Canaries
and Coal Miners.

The news last week refreshed the betrayal of poverty hanging over the lives of so many.

Including my own memories from my early teens.

When I can’t place those inchoate feelings, I open my kitchen cupboards.

I witness some effects of hoarding tin cans like tiny soldiers.

Standing straight and facing forward.

A sigh of relief.

This story belongs to many.

Warping back to those bare walls in a soup kitchen, lifeless conversations, long stares and whispers.

It’s not homelessness, but it’s not comfortable living.

You live penny to penny with half-a-foot outside your door.

Boris says that he "totally understands the issue of holiday hunger," whilst he and 321 of his Tory MPs voted to ensure that the coming holidays would be the toughest hundreds of thousands of children have ever had to endure.

He talks about the success of the £1000 uplift to Universal Credit being a far more effective measure to combat holiday hunger, yet his party has given no commitment to keep this additional £20 a week beyond next April.

"You are not going to see children going hungry as a result of Government inattention this Christmas" he says.

It is heartening how many individuals & businesses have responded to @MarcusRashford’s appeal to help children needing #FSM over half term. It is really encouraging that many people care about keeping children safe & healthy so they can grow up in the best possible circumstances
#safeguarding must always come first though. We are alarmed at some of the offers of help we have seen. We must not normalise unsafe practises such as encouraging online contact from kids, going to meet adults they don’t know & taking gifts from strangers. Safeguards must be used
We know people want to help but this must be done safely or the consequences could be severe. Sadly children have frequently been groomed with food. The guardian has reported here. Boys are more usually groomed into the drug trade. #ENDCHILDFOODPOVERTY

This autumn, hundreds of thousands of parents have signed up to receive free school meals for the first time. As millions of families face a furlough cliff-edge and more families face tighter restrictions, October half term comes at a particularly hard time for many (1/5)
I promise to continue campaigning to #endchildfoodpoverty on a local & national level. Where the Government has allowed children to go hungry, there will continue to be a number of incredible organisations locally that come forward to provide support where the Govt hasn’t 👇

Paying close attention to the Commons today and to those who are willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of our most vulnerable children, 2.2M of them who currently qualify for Free School Meals. 42% newly registered. Not to mention the 1.5M children who currently don’t qualify.
Since March 32% of families have suffered a drop in income...

13.2% rise in unemployment expected...

We aren’t in the same position we were in in the Summer, it’s much worse. The number of children with little to no access to food has risen significantly.

“If you feed children properly, you increase educational attainment, boost life chances and, therefore, cut costs in the long run.”

The attainment gap btw between disadvantaged and those better off is estimated to be 75%. A result of school closures...

#endchildfoodpoverty is not about children going hungry during the school holidays, this is about children going hungry full stop. Let’s not loose sight of the bigger picture here. There are at least 1.5million children we are not reaching with the free school meal scheme...

1.5million children have little to no access to food today...

As you pour your cereal, grab your pastry and your coffee to go this morning, think about that. 1.5million without any help at all.

Are we all just going to go about our day knowing that 1.5M 7-16 year olds need our help and our voice??

We need a long term framework to protect our children not another sticking plaster.

The asks remain the same and we won’t settle for less 👇🏾 (3)
