1) Meet Khalid. He’s 27 and a father of three. He worked through the COVID-19 pandemic for @Deliveroo taking food to the public while they kept safe. Recently Khalid was unfairly terminated and has desperately set up a fundraiser for himself and his family justgiving.com/crowdfunding/h…
2) Khalid worked long days almost everyday of the week and just a couple of weeks after being terminated his is already behind on his bills and facing destitution. This shows you just how close to poverty these courses are despite spending almost every waking hour at work
3) @Deliveroo publicly hail their courier workforce as “heroes” but the way they treat them could not be further from hero treatment. Long hours, barely making enough to make ends meet and unfair terminations is the story most couriers will repeat wired.co.uk/article/delive…

Our motion speaks to an ugly truth about Irish society. Over 200,000 children are at risk of poverty in Ireland and more than 90,000 are in consistent poverty. That is more children than the entire population of my constituency - @HollyCairnsTD #EndChildPoverty Image
Analysis by @CSOIreland found that the risk of poverty is higher in rural areas. The erosion of working conditions means there are many farming and fishing families who fall below the poverty line - this needs to change. @HollyCairnsTD #EndChildPoverty
The eradication of child poverty can be achieved within the lifetime of this Dáil if Govt shows ambition and provides the commitment and means to do so. We are echoing calls by @SocialJusticeI, @SVP_Ireland, @ChildRightsIRL and others. @HollyCairnsTD #EndChildPoverty

Lone parents have consistently been the most vulnerable in our society. Poverty impacts on every one of our senses as human beings. @1GaryGannon #EndChildPoverty Image
If eliminating child poverty is not the main ambition of this Dail, then I don't know what we're doing here. @1GaryGannon
Poverty in schools also needs to be highlighted. There was talk about a digital divide when schools were closed due to #COVID19. But the divide was far more than just that - some students didn't even have a table to work from. @1GaryGannon #EndChildPoverty

Speaking on #SocDems motion to #EndChildPoverty, @OCallaghanCian says Govt can do much better than take in four refugee children from #Lesvos Image
The Housing First model works - but it's a political choice. We have to decide what type of country we want. Govt needs to take a leadership role to #EndChildPoverty @OCallaghanCian
We currently have 2,620 children living in emergency or temporary accommodation. In 1990, there were five families in Dublin put into emergency accommodation for the entire year - by mid-2019, we were looking at four families a day in the region. @OCallaghanCian #EndChildPoverty

Ending child poverty has to be done on a whole of Government basis and across all parties. We need leadership - and we can take that step today. @WhitmoreJen #EndChildPoverty Image
A child can be at risk or in consistent poverty. It can be associated with being born into marginalised group or having a parent with a disability. It can be based on the marital status of a parent, social status or a particular geographic location. @WhitmoreJen #EndChildPoverty
Child poverty rates doubled during the last recession. They are now experiencing the second recession of their lives and have never known economic recovery. @WhitmoreJen #EndChildPoverty

We heard a little about childhood cancer (possibly good but waiting for details) and school choice (not good) in last night’s #SOTU.

However, despite 1/4 of the population, children were largely ignored.

But we have a proactive agenda for kids. —> campaignforchildren.org/resources/repo… (1)
It begins with this simple premise and demand:

“Any policies that affect children should base their foundations on the best interests of the child.” #BestInterestsOfTheChild #SOTU (2)
We are asking lawmakers to ask and affirmatively answer one simple question when they are making public policy:

“Is it good for the children?” #SOTU (3)
