Putting this out there into the #EndFamilySeparation universe: @MarleeDeck and I are trying to reunite two families today. Not tomorrow. Today. Do I know anyone willing to use frequent flier miles to buy tickets for a mom to fly from Nashville (BNA) to NYC & back? With a +1 home.
Heartfelt apologies for the disappointment felt by my 1000s of new MAGA followers who read the thread I wrote about my meeting with Pres. Obama that’s bounced around 19M times (literally). But maybe you’ll be interested in what @AlexNowrasteh and @mkolken have to say. #FF
It has been amazing to watch a couple thousand people tweet some version of “where was your outrage when Obama did it?!” at liberals and fake news outlets, while simultaneously showing zero outrage now, and doing nothing to stop it. If that’s the takeaway, idk, Man. IDK.
There used to be three or four main idealogical tent poles to conservatism and the Republican Party: (1) libertarianism/limited government “less government = more freedom; (2) “Moral Majority”/WWJD/“values voters” (3) Fiscal conservatives (4) strong national defense. Not anymore.
U.S. Citizens - Call Congress and ask them use their oversight authority to #EndFamilySeparation. We must ensure the rights of children and parents are respected, and our legal system is allowed to work. Call- (202)224-3121 to share this important message. #ReuniteFamiliesNow
2. 2014 Brian Williams reported on 52k children cramped into small facilities and while "taking children from Mothers" is never said listen closely when they say ADULTS are deported, kids stay? @NBCNews knows this and it was @RepMcCaul (R) that was worried #KeepFamiliesTogether
Let’s be clear about what this Executive Order does: Instead of imprisoning children in separate internment camps away from their parents, this administration will now imprison children in the same internment camps as their parents.
The Executive Order @realDonaldTrump just signed does nothing to end the “zero-tolerance policy” that automatically criminalizes any and all immigrants who cross the border without legal papers, including those seeking asylum.
It does nothing to end the imprisonment of children.
Children locked in “tender age” prison camps will still be locked in camps. Family detention camps.
ICE lied, told flight attendants the kids were a soccer team. They weren't. Now this flight attendant won't work when the US transports children away from their parents. "I might as well have been a collaborator on their transport." houstonchronicle.com/local/gray-mat…#EndFamilySeparation
"We want no part of it" — @united Airlines CEO, saying his jetliner will not carry detainees separated from their family under the inhumane #Trump administration policy, in planning since September, which medical authorities have called child abuse. The statement:
2) The initial logic pans out. It stated that there were situations occurring, such as Planned Parenthood's vivisection of fetuses and selling off portions of them, that were barbaric and deserved comparison to Mengele, the Nazi scientist known for cruel experiments on children
3) However, even as the author of the article briefly covers that Godwin initially proposed the law to prevent lazy arguments and rigid thinking like calling everyone who disagreed with you a Nazi, the author then tosses that claim aside
Thread: How did we get here?
In 2015, I shook President Obama’s hand, thanked him for DACA, and asked him to reverse course & close the for-profit baby jails (also known as “family detention centers”) he opened in Dilley & Karnes City, Texas. What he said shook me to my core 1/
2/ Specifically, I told him, “It’s wrong. And it’s going to be a stain on your legacy.” He stopped moving on to the next person in the rope line and looked back at me. I’d gotten his attention. He turned back, looked at me and “Are you an immigration lawyer?” “Yes”
3/ Just days before, President Obama’s senior immigration policy advisor @cecmunoz had received a chilly welcome during her keynote address to the @AILANational annual conference attendees in National Harbor. She was greeted with silent protest & signs saying #EndFamilyDetention
•WW2—1.2M White Germans excused, while under the same criteria Japanese sent to Concentration Camps
•Today—100K Undoc Canadians excused, while under the same criteria Undoc Latinos sent to Concentration Camps
This isn't about the Law—It's about White Supremacy
One opportunity to help is to volunteer w/ @TXCivilRights - they are in need of Spanish, Mam, Q’eqchi’ or K’iche’ and have paralegal or legal assistant experience to help w/ their legal intake process in McAllen, TX - here is the volunteer form: texascivilrightsproject.org/keepfamiliesto…
TCRP is also in need of full time volunteers to help lead a parallel process of intake efforts in Brownsville, Laredo, El Paso, and Alpine, Texas. They can help you with training and capacity to organize legal intake in these cities. Here is the form: texascivilrightsproject.org/keepfamiliesto… 3/
Flores did three things: 1. Require govt. to release children from detention without delay 2. If sponsor isn't found, govt. is required to place children in least restrictive setting 3. Require govt. to set standards for care in detention for children
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
the detention of immigrant kids & families isn't all new, but thanks to @chrislhayes and others, it's finally getting the mainstream attention and outrage it deserves. many have asked what they can do to help - a few ideas. #EndFamilySeparation#KeepFamiliesTogether 1/
first: money! there are fantastic, smart, hardworking attorneys in the trenches doing this grueling work every day. give to them. a few suggestions in the thread to follow. (there are many people doing this vital work - not an exhaustive list.) 2/
has a bond fund to help parents reunite with their children. they're also raising $$ to provide lawyers to unaccompanied kids facing deportation - that's right, if a toddler can't pay for a lawyer, she's on her own. that's where @RAICESTEXAS comes in. 3/
Want to know #WhereAreTheChildren ? Here’s what happens when a family seeks asylum at the US border (Thread)
First, it’s important to know that it’s LEGAL to seek asylum at a Port of Entry. CBP is obligated to accept refugee families, but we’ve recorded hundreds of instances of unlawful turn-aways. Families lucky enough to be processed face a horrific system designed to tear them apart
If minor children are traveling with both parents, Dad is almost always detained separately. That means his asylum case proceeds apart from that of his family. We’ve seen many cases of dads deported while his wife and kids remain in the US #EndFamilySeparation
The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) houses immigrant children because it ostensibly can protect their best interests better than ICE - which it often can’t because ICE’s interests dictate many of its policies. It should be a child welfare agency, not a jailer
Unaccompanied children (UCs) need continued support post-release, and in representing hundreds of UCs, I’ve seen dozens suffer abuse at the hands of their sponsors, even their own families. Because state child welfare agencies often won’t help older teens, they are on their own
