In the year to June 2021, 17,088 people entered immigration detention in the UK, 11 per cent fewer than in the previous year.

Numbers entering detention fell sharply throughout the pandemic, but the number of people entering detention in the second quarter of 2021 (April to June) was comparable to pre-pandemic levels - 5,878, compared to 5,792 in Q2 2019.

The return of business as usual?
At the end of June 2021, there were 1,550 people in immigration detention - more than double the number at the end of June 2020 (698) when the impact of the pandemic on numbers was most pronounced, but 5% fewer than at the end of December 2019 (1,637).
