Spent this morning visiting a shelter for Ukrainian refugees in Tijuana.

While the Ukrainian refugees at the Tijuana shelter are in extremely challenging circumstances, the shelter itself is secure, clean & well organized. There is safe transport to the border, plenty of food & clothing.
And most importantly: OPTIONS for those sheltered there.

Meanwhile, at shelter where we provide legal services to brown & Black migrants trapped in MX for months/yrs, conditions are incredibly challenging. Even more disturbing the men, women & children sheltered there have essentially no options to seek protection. #EndMPP #EndTitle42
Today, we, along with @ImmDef @TransLawCenter @JFSSD + @sdACLU filed a complaint asking @DHSOIG to investigate @CBP’s failure to expeditiously process urgent humanitarian parole applications. Right now humanitarian parole is practically the only path to safety in the U.S.
In recent months, dozens of applications for urgent humanitarian parole filed by all of us have gone unanswered for weeks, if not months or denied with no explanation
Some of the pending applications include:
- A family with a 3yr old child who has urgent medical needs due to suffering from epilepsy + the frequent seizures caused by the condition.
- A family with a baby who has intracranial hypertension, epilepsy + fluid in the brain.

We are extremely disappointed in the Biden Administration's decision to appeal the federal court ruling that would block #Title42. @POTUS has a moral obligation to stop using T42 to harm families and children seeking asylum.

We at RAICES have a front row seat to the horrors of Title 42. Our clients are stuck in Mexico. Families fleeing violence are turned away. U.S. and international Asylum law is flouted.
That’s why we joined forces with the @ACLU, @TXCivilRights, @CGRShastings, @Oxfam, @ACLUTx , and @ACLU_DC to fight back. Together we challenged the Title 42 expulsions in federal court.
Spent today in #Tijuana with migrant families expelled w/o due process to crowded shelters by a @POTUS & @CDCgov order which expels people seeking asylum, while allowing other travelers to enter w/o testing

Spent the day touring the Emergency Intake Site at the Long Beach Convention Center & want to share thoughts. Our tour concluded about an hr before the first group of unaccompanied children arrived, & tomorrow myself & team @ImmDef will be back to begin providing legal services.
On the tour were multiple elected officials from Long Beach, including @LongBeachMayor, who reiterated throughout the day his hope that this facility will be a reflection of Long Beach’s rich history of welcoming immigrants and that these children will be met with love and care.
The Mayor’s call for meeting this moment w/ compassion translated into the facility which has been nicely decorated & seemed well equipped to house the 1000+ children who are expected. In the sleeping area large pink butterflies are projected onto walls giving a mural-like effect

After one of Magdalena's daughters was sexually assaulted, she fled with her two girls to seek asylum in the U.S. But while in CBP custody, Magdalena was shackled and taken away from them, ripped apart by the Trump administration in front of her 9 yo and 16 yo daughters. 2/5

Children should never be in govt custody for a moment longer than absolutely necessary & we need to move towards a family first model, stop separating kids from non-parental caregivers and invest in community based resources including universal representation and social services.

2/ UPDATE 25 FEB: "Hi Sarah, I already registered on the UNHCR website. I received a call yesterday, asking me for more information. They said that my application is in process and to wait for another communication. It is the US gov that will decide when we cross." #WeCanWelcome
3/ UPDATE #2: "They say that today the first group of 25 people will pass to the US from Matamoros. In 16 months of waiting, it is the first time that there is positive news. We feel very happy since this marks the beginning of the end."
