The New Zealand Government invited the public to comment on the Venture Capital Fund Bill, so I made a submission: zmint.co

#nzpol #VentureCapital #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #GrowthHacking #SocialEnterprise
The Ākina Foundation also made a submission, calling for 10% of the fund to go into impact investment (I called it social enterprises). They also see investment readiness as an issue.

Here's how I create products. When an idea comes to me, I type it in a phone app and spend days or even months just chewing on it. I don't hold any brainstorms and I don't develop any vision boards. I just chew.
Over time, I add points to the idea, teasing it out. Finally, I take pen to paper and flesh out the idea in my journal, just to see it better. I'm not a visual person, so I prefer words to diagrams.
Finally, when I think I've figured out how the idea can make money (and never before), I speak to members of my tribe to ask what they think. I then refine the idea further.

The problem of #entrepreneurship is not to come up with a unique idea or product, but to do it well--which means to supply a good or service that is well in line with what consumers value. It is as much about figuring out something new as it is to implement the idea well. It's a
problem that people believe that the idea is what makes the entrepreneur, whereas the truth is that it is a lot of hard work. Very often the first mover has no advantage, while the second mover learns from the failures of the first mover. Which disproves the idea that profit is
about the idea. It is not. Profit is about satisfying consumers' wants, whether with a new type of good or just a better iteration of an already existing one. Which means the uncertainty that entrepreneurs face is not about simply being able to "milk" the idea, but about running

I did a research project on the lack of diversity in #entrepreneurship last year. It ended up turning into a study on "why non-white, low-income, and lower-middle-class people don't take risks." Wanted to share it here: /1
First, young people are 20%+ more likely to start a business or organization when they have a *relatable* mentor who has done similar. If there is nobody who looks like you/grew up with you who has opened a business, it's far less likely you'll take that path. /2
Crazy part? If you remove white people and the upper-half of the income bracket from that equation, the gap goes from 20% to almost 40%. Mentors matter, and low-income and non-white young people just don't have the mentorship in those spaces. /3

What does an economy do? Modern #economics suggests it is about [production] #efficiency, and develops models for assessing the degree to which it is achieved and predicting outcomes assuming it. This is a fundamental misunderstanding that, when scratching on the surface, clearly
is as impossible as it is undesirable. Economy is about #valuecreation: about getting more out of less. Efficiency is backward-looking and lacking of progress, while value creation is future-oriented and aspirational. What I mean by that is that efficiency is about tinkering with
processes and mechanisms that already exist, with the goal of making them run faster, smoother, and with less waste. It is about #management, about reducing costs and cutting overhead. But one cannot cut costs unless there is already an established process ssrn.com/abstract=30582…

I’ve been meeting a ton of younger / newer PMs, and when I ask them why they’re interested in the field, they give these canned responses about enjoying working in teams, influencing without authority, enjoying legos when they were kids... 😌
Growing up in Nigeria, the common joke was that you could either be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, or disgrace to the family. Naturally, we all had canned responses for one of the non-disgrace options. But hadn’t really thought about what we wanted for ourselves.
The MBAs / CS graduates I meet these days make #prodmgmt sound like one of the non-disgrace career options I heard when I was a child.

It’s a solid choice, and if you know enough about it, choosing it is in of itself a humble brag (ie I love teams, leading w/o influence etc).

Startups enjoy ridiculing suits (& bus school profs!) for their focus on strategic planning rather than iterative learning, MVPs, etc... The tension betwn strategic planning and iterative learning has finally been resolved by @joshgans @sstern_mit @wu_jane bit.ly/2ua6MZT
The Paradox of Entrepreneurship - ranking alternative viable strategies requires knowledge that can only be gained through experimentation, but experimentation to resolve uncertainty ultimately results in some level of commitment that can foreclose particular strategic options.
Implication for entrepreneurs: "to reject passivity in the process of commercializing their ideas, to recognize the shadow cost of learning by experimentation, and to apply "Test Two, Choose One" to guide their choice process." #startup #strategy #DecisionMaking

When you're building your product, think of it as if you're packing your backpack 🎒.

1/6👇🏻
You need for it to only carry along what is needed for the trip you're going to take.
And you need to take as little as possible because every ounce of extra will make you work harder over time 📈.
2/6👇🏻
This applies one-on-one for building product, too: pack too many features or just that little functionality that you want to put in there quickly. And you'll probably end up carrying its weight - whether it is in the form of fixing bugs, handling support,...

When Ludwig von Mises noted that a manager is a "junior partner" of the entrepreneur (Human Action, p. 301), he did not mean to downplay the role of management in the economy. On the contrary, he wanted to make clear how the economic functions #entrepreneurship and #management
are different yet related. From the point of view of the economic system, i.e. how the market works, entrepreneurship is, according to Mises, the uncertainty-bearing of enterprise: entrepreneurs allocate scarce, productive resources between different types of production, many
of which are not yet in existence. The bearing of uncertainty means simply that you're committing resources, which have multiple valuable uses, to specific production processes. If that decision is "wrong" you suffer a loss; if the decision is better than most you earn a profit.

Let's have our weekly #GlobalEChats and discuss the topic of #foodtech #delivery.

As #food is a necessity, it is natural that #entrepreneurs are lured into venturing in the F&B business. What more with #IR40, we often think of taking business one step ahead: by involving tech!
Now let's break this down into two types of niche within #fooddelivery and #fnb industry.

1. You own the restaurant and you are providing an additional delivery #service.

2. You don't own any restaurant and you are merely the delivery service.

The two are very different!
To help put points into perspective:

#1 is a classic example of pizza stores such as @DominosMY. Any #eatery can set up its own delivery system.

#2 is a rather new invention. Such examples would be @foodpanda_my and @GrabMY's GrabFood service!

Hello, everyone! Let's start our #thread on #child #entrepreneurs, both in #Malaysia and abroad.

We'll talk about the success stories as well as how to foster their development 😊 Let's go! Feel free to add on to the thread with your own opinion and sharing.
Latest in Malaysia is the story of Ferris. Ferris merupakan usahawan cilik yang terpengaruh secara positif dengan siri Upin dan Ipin! It's good to see how entrepreneurship in an animated series can piqued children and their interest in entrepreneurship!

If you ask if there are more of such stories in #Malaysia, there are!

11 y.o Elisa Ahmad Sayuti and her friends got inspired by both their participation in Kelab Usahawan Cilik as well as seeing their parents who are also #entrepreneurs!

CAPITAL OR NOT.

For so many Startups, the excuse for not actually starting a business or executing an idea is the capital to start with.

Some have had to quit an idea to pursue the needed cash but never came back to the idea. Only a few young minds could manage through.
2/4
Few sources below could help with that needed fund:
*Friends
*Family members
*Angel Investors
*Venture Capitalists
*Banks
*NGOs
3/4
The list above is actually supposed to help out with the needed resources but if none works out, use what you have to get what is needed not what is desired, but remember to always be godly.

Let's start our #GEMChats this week. The topic of this week is #student #entrepreneurship!

We'll discuss these three factors in the poll options below as well as replies to the poll 🧐🧐🧐 Let's take this forward!
#Students? And #entrepreneurship? Is that even a good combination?

Especially when you read that the famous student entrepreneurs like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are all dropouts!!!

Can students not only run a #business while studying but also be #successful at it?
Taking a different perspective at this is that while these billionaires are college dropouts, the #idea for the #business all came about when they were in #college! As a young #student, your ideas have a chance at being fresh and can be developed through stringent planning!

0/ Thread. Having spent some time with @Nicolas_Colin on his new book HEDGE about #tech, #entrepreneurship, social #policy and the future of the Safety Net, I'm sharing some things that stuck with me, and why HEDGE is one for the ☀️📚📝 #readinglist amazon.com/Hedge-Greater-…
1/ @Nicolas_Colin is thought-provoking not least because of his vantage point - graduated from the French ENA, worked at the top of the French civil service, set up his own company, and invests in startups all over 🇪🇺 with @_TheFamily
2/ Im not one for party politics, and HEDGE isn't about that. It's a book that speaks to the zeitgeist of the #techlash and ways for #startup #founders and #politicians to think about smart, sensible policies to build an inclusive Safety Net 2.0 📖

Does AUSA Moira Kim Penza, prosecutor in the fed. #NXIVM #RICO criminal racketeering case, realize that her indictments of #NXIVM leader, Keith Raniere aka "Vanguard," last March, may have affected the outcome of the 2018 Mexican Presidential Election? #ArizonaMafia #Democrats
Moira Kim Penza is 1 of the main prosecutors in the federal #NXIVM #RICO criminal case. A #RICO case is very serious; it is 1 of the most complex types of prosecutions the U.S. Government can initiate. Moira's boss is Richard P. Donoghue, U.S. Atty for the Eastern District of NY.
Penza is a smart lawyer. According to publicly available information, she studied at Cornell Law School, a private Ivy League University located in Ithaca, New York. Cornell was ranked the #13 law school in America, out of 203 law schools, by U.S. News & World Report, in 2018.

Hello, everyone and welcome back to our weekly #GEMChats! This week, we'll discuss the results of the poll on whether #celebrities make successful #entrepreneurs!

Let's begin, shall we?

So recently @KylieJenner sparked a heated debate on how celebrities are successful at entrepreneurship when she was announced to become the youngest self-made #billionaire ever.

cnbc.com/2018/07/11/kyl…

#KUWTK
Some feel strongly that she only dethroned #MarkZuckerberg from that position because she is part of the #Kardashian and her #entrepreneurial venture has multi-level of safety net and it allows her to #scaleup at an exponential rate.

BUSINESS LESSONS FROM SCRABBLE | I won a game of #Scrabble over the weekend. I was down by 30 points, but played the word, logjam, on triple word and double letter spots to earn 50 points. #Business #Entrepreneurship
Another day, I was leading in a game of Ludo and had 2 seeds left. My boss was lagging behind, but then he won by pecking my 2 seeds before I could get home. Isn't that like life? Those ahead of you don't always win and vice versa.
My Scrabble game taught me a few lessons about business:

YOU WILL HAVE MORE THAN ONE IDEA | I spoke to a young man recently about a business deal. He was more concerned about the money he would make than the opportunities he would gain. #Thread #Ideas #Entrepreneurship #Career
Sometimes when I talk to entrepreneurs, they seem obsessed with people stealing their ideas. They assume they will have only one good idea in life. They think a single deal will be their only source of prosperity.
Employees do the same. They hold on to jobs desperately. Some embezzle funds because they are not confident of another chance to "hammer".

J'ai lu "Essai sur la nature du commerce en général" de Cantillon (1755), voici un #thread sur des trucs que j'ai appris / que j'ai trouvés intéressants / des extraits choisis. 1/

Good evening, #entrepreneurs! Let us discuss this week's #GEMChats on #startups and #disruptors to the #tourism industry.

Feel free to #RT, reply and engage with us as we go on with this thread.
The answers to the #poll indicates that most of you feel the biggest gamechanger to the #tourism industry in this #Industry40 is the rise of low cost airlines followed closely by travel accommodations #startups like @Airbnb and @agoda.

Well, you aren't wrong there!
Low cost airlines #democratise travel for everyone. As @tonyfernandes puts it in @AirAsia's tagline: "Now Everyone Can Fly".

Flying had been considered a luxury accessible only to the middle class and well-heeled (sic) - Jack Yu writes at linkedin.com/pulse/now-ever…
