…I drove the perimeter. It was hard not to think of my great-grandfather, born in Galacia/Austro-Hungarian Poland, and who fled to avoid conscription in the years before WWI. Had he not left, would I be here? 5/x
But here’s why I’m really telling you all this: After it was cotton mill, but before it became condos, it was — no, I’m not kidding… 6/x

This week — after yrs of research, contemplation, COVID-delays — I *finally* visited the RI cotton mill where my great-grandfather labored during WWII. It sits along the Blackstone River, which had powered the US Industrial Revolution🧵 #envhist #PlasticPollution 1/x
Built in 1904 by the Blackstone Cotton Co — eventually owned by Lonsdale, tied to Brown & Ives, Brown—the family that built Triangle Trade ships and benefactor to Brown U., The mill closed shortly after my great-grandfathered signed his over-45 draft card. 2/x
The mill is now condos — but there were artifacts in the lobby. Gears and spools of wound gray (I presume?) cotton thread. Roaming the lobby, it brought to mind my favorite @JoniTevis essay —Warp + Weft. 3/x

1) We recommended James Daschuk's Canadian bestseller Clearing the Plains.

Pair it with George Colpitts's Pemmican Empire, which examines food, imperialism/colonialism, and Indigenous-settler relations on the Prairies in the same era. cambridge.org/core/books/pem…
2) We recommended Sarah Carter's Imperial Plots, a multiple award-winning history of Prairie women farmers and ranchers.

Pair it with Cheryl Troupe's dissertation on Métis women's food harvesting & land tenure in the Qu'Appelle Valley from 1850 to 1950. harvest.usask.ca/handle/10388/1…

Got up at 3:50 am for our #STREAMS2021 roundtable and then had MAJOR technical problems and couldn’t present my statement. So I’m going to tweet it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #envhum
I describe myself as an environmental historian, editor, and digital communications strategist.

I received my BA in history from Bethany College (WV) and my MA in history from the University of Rochester. #STREAMS2021 #envhum

Today I realized a childhood dream by becoming lead author of an article in @nature. It coins a new term – the “History of Climate and Society” (HCS) – to refer to the interdisciplinary study of the past impacts of #ClimateChange on people. #EnvHist 1/11 nature.com/articles/s4158…
It offers a critique of the field as it has been pursued to date, presents a new research framework for HCS, and shows how the application of that framework can permit new scholarship into the resilience of populations that faced modest, pre-industrial climate change. 2/11
It then identifies five “pathways” that allowed populations to endure and even exploit these changes. I hope that this publication will encourage HCS scholars to explore more diverse consequences of climate changes on past populations - beyond the rise and fall of societies. 3/11

A historical puzzle: the U.S. is a strange outlier in its "energy intensity", using far more energy per dollar of GDP than most other countries, even over the same historical period. See our answer at bit.ly/3o8o8Qu. 3/x

Medieval European texts show figures that might possibly be blind holding a staff & the lead of a dog. As per @NinonDubourg, dogs were not considered reliable or safe in theory, but they were likely used as companions and fellow performers while begging.

I'm grateful to @brdemuth for suggesting that this thread on the Arctic Refuge might be useful in teaching. I thought I would add a few more sources in case you want to introduce students to this topic in #envhist and other courses.
The thread (currently pinned to my profile) includes many sources, most importantly a map produced by the Gwich'in Steering Committee (@OurArcticRefuge) as well as links to several videos and articles. But here are a few more I've used before in classes.
The Refuge, a short film from 2016, which includes interviews with Gwich'in leaders @bernademientief, @ArcticDaazhraii, and Sarah James.

THREAD: Happy #EarthDay ! Let’s look now at one key factor, besides Covid-19, that makes this year’s celebration different from many that have come before: the kids.
#envhist #envhum Image
Of course, children and youth have long been involved in Earth Day events and other actions. Yet environmental leaders and the media have often presented them as emotional props, as symbols of innocence and vulnerability in need of adult protection.
Consider this 1963 ad produced by SANE in its campaign against nuclear testing. We see three white children, all sporting open-mouthed smiles and shiny white teeth. The text below, though, undercuts the carefree image: “Your children’s teeth contain Strontium-90.” Image

3/16 Image
