Yesterday we made a formal complaint that @DefraGovUK missed its own legal deadline for publishing #EnvironmentAct targets in England.
These are important targets that will help set ambition for and drive nature’s recovery.

The point here is that most of what bothers us is in the detail, and we want our supporters to know what this is so you can judge UK Government rhetoric against the reality of actual proposals. Warm words are great, but we need action! So …
Yesterday, @DefraGovUK proposed a new statutory national water efficiency target under #EnvironmentAct.
So far so good.
But the proposed 20% reduction in water company 'Distribution Input' by 2037, per capita, is pathetically weak.
It means no action at all, here's why... 1/n

Putting the target on a 'per capita' basis means any gains in water efficiency for the environment could be negated by population growth.
In an extreme scenario, if popn growth is 20%+ by 2037 then MORE water could be taken from the environment and target would still be met

ONS's projections suggest population will rise by ~10% between now and late 2030s. If so, it means actual use of public water supplies need only fall by 10% to achieve the target.
Government has published proposals for new #nature targets. It's good to see the 2030 #StateofNature target to halt #wildlife decline recognised as an apex goal. Thanks to all who campaigned with us.

In particular, on biodiversity, the long-term target for wildlife (10% increase on 2030 baseline by 2042) could see species abundance *lower* in 20 years' time than it is today.
That's not in line with the Government's 25 Year Plan promise to pass on #nature in better condition.

There's no target for the condition of SSSIs, despite the previous promise (below) that 75% will be in good condition by 2042.
The target for 500k hectares of habitat creation/restoration is a gross figure and does not take account of net losses, so we could see overall loss.
