For each day of #PrideMonth I’ll highlight a different LGBT Jewish icon.

1. Edie Windsor

Her Supreme Court case overturned the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, paving the way for marriage equality and a host of other LGBT legal protections.

Meeting her was a true blessing.
Everyone who’s met Edie says the same thing— she had a charm for making you feel like family. She also had a special glow that will always stay with me. I hope I can radiate with as much love and joy as she did. What a life she lived.

2. Magnus Hirschfeld

Dubbed the “Einstein of sex,” the German physician founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee in 1897 which was the 1st recorded LGBT rights group in history! He also pioneered the 1st gender reassignment surgery. The Nazis later destroyed his institute.

WA-07 is one of the most engaged districts in the country. It really matters that you're engaged and that you're paying attention.
Our office spends a lot of energy, effort and time. Please know that on anything related to a federal issue - we can help you navigate that!

Last year, we served over 1,500 individual constituents and got $1.6 MILLION dollars back to our constituents!

A week ago, 228 Democrats led by @SpeakerPelosi voted to protect my #lesbian family from discrimination.
Only 8 GOP voted for the #EqualityAct.
That was one of 250 initiatives the Democrats have passed this year.
GOP?
Nothing.
Last week I wrote about what Democrats and GOP said in the debate over whether LGBTQ people deserve civil rights. It went about as you'd expect.

#EqualityAct Vote Makes History epgn.com/news/breaking-…
While Democrats were doing the work of getting the #EqualityAct to the floor, the #GOP was lying about LGBTQ people and about what the bill entails.

@womensmarch Since you're still lying about women's concerns about the #EqualityAct, let me clarify: As currently written, Equality Act guts women's sex-based protections by redefining sex to include sex stereotypes, "mannerisms," and gender identity (aka "sex stereotypes 2.0").
@womensmarch When the law can't "see" sex--like when #EqualityAct equates sex, gender identity, sex stereotypes, and mannerisms--the law can't be used to fight sexism. What feminists are asking is that the law protect transgender people AS transgender people, AND protect women as a sex class
@womensmarch This is, FYI, what so-called "TERFs" get tarred and feathered for saying: We want trans people to be protected from violence, discrimination, and harassment. We also know that sex matters. We want to protect the rights of women and girls, too.

Why is @nationalNow supporting the US #EqualityAct and insisting "trans women are women" and there's "no debate"? Well I did some digging to find out. +
Since it's founding in 1966, the National Organization for Women, @nationalnow, has had as it's non-profit purpose to "take action to achieve full equality for women in the United States." But that changed in 2016. +
In 2016, @NationalNOW changed it's purpose to "to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals & lead societal change." After 50 years of working for equality for women, they've decided that feminism is about 'ideals" & all social problems?! +

Today is a historic, monumental day in Congress. For the first time, we have passed comprehensive legislation that would extend federal civil rights protections to the LGBT community.
We cannot let this moment pass without recognizing the enormous significance of what it means for the House of Representatives to make clear that we stand with the LGBT community, and will fight for them. These protections have been too long delayed, but they will not be denied.
We won the fight in the House today, and we will continue until we see these protections become law. #EqualityAct

Today the House votes on whether I deserve the same civil rights as you.

It's not expected to pass.
#EqualityAct
I love when straight people parse my civil rights for me.

If the #EqualityAct passes the House and does not pass the Senate--and not ONE Republican in Congress supports it nor do all Democrats--that means it doesn't pass.

Having people vote on your right to be equal is awful.
Also, every queer and trans person in America has the right to be furious.

My wife lost a teaching position over being gay. Everyone I know has been threatened with losing their jobs for being gay. I couldn't get a mortgage with my wife because we were gay. The list is long.

Tomorrow the House of Representatives will vote on the #EqualityAct, and for the first time go on the record about whether they support protections from discrimination for LGBTQ people. Call your reps and make sure they'll be on the right side of history: aclu.org/pass-the-equal…
We don't want to live in a country where people can't participate fully in public life because of our gender, sexual orientation, race, or religion. Tell Congress that a vote on the Equality Act is a vote on the kind of country we want to be. aclu.org/pass-the-equal…
The fight didn't end with marriage. Nearly 2/3 of LGBTQ Americans report experiencing discrimination at work, in housing, in public spaces.
Tomorrow, Congress can take us closer to true, lived equality. aclu.org/pass-the-equal…

Religious freedom & gay rights are always pitted against each other, but I'm beginning to see new reconciliations. Can we enhance both? Someone passed along this article from a Stanford undergraduate Christian journal (yes this exists!) as a conversation starter. cc @DouthatNYT
Note some of the proposed Republican amendments to the #EqualityAct aimed at expanding religious exemptions. And in the case of @DrPaulGosar's amendment, adding protections against political discrimination. washingtonblade.com/2019/05/10/hou…
I'm skeptical about these, but there is a conversation here to advance. Even though I'm gay, I'm more concerned about protecting religious freedom these days. The left has become out-of-control about imposing their views on gender etc. and not respecting religious differences.

For 2yrs Trump's DOJ has actively fought lesbian & gay employment discrimination cases, even when the lower courts have found in favor of lesbian & gay plaintiffs on the clearly delineated basis of Title VII.
These cases & the trans military ban make the #EqualityAct imperative.
I've been writing about this Trump DOJ issue for 2yrs. It's highly unlikely, given Gorsuch's and Kavanaugh's anti-gay stances that the #SCOTUS will find for #LGBT plaintiffs. But at least in hearing the cases, the issue of how unequal LGBT are is raised.

curvemag.com/News/Will-Trum…
This #SCOTUS case is critical because most Americans aren't even aware of the breadth of discrimination against #LGBT people as I explained here in this news story:

New studies show fewer Americans think LGBT people face discrimination epgn.com/news/national/…

The far right is hitting this point hard today at the #EqualityAct
hearing — that banning transgender discrimination erases legal protections for women.

Interesting to see conservatives suddenly so passionate about women’s legal rights.
The consistency of Republican attacks on the #EqualityAct today — "radical gender identity policies” — is further proof Heritage Foundation is truly writing the right-wing script in America.
On the one hand, it's unprecedented to see the #EqualityAct debate reach Congress, and that’s a moment. But the debate itself is so familiar. This is basically verbatim of what’s been happening in legislatures and councils nonstop on every pro-LGBT and anti-LGBT bill for years.

Almost 50 years ago, patrons at the Stonewall Inn said enough was enough. In 2016, we made it a National Monument. Today, we build upon the legacy of those who fought for equality, and of generations of LGBTQ activists since then, by introducing #HR5, the #EqualityAct.
This bill once and for all explicitly bans discrimination against the LGBTQ community and would ensure its full integration into all areas of American life, including in employment, housing, credit, education, public accommodations, federally funded programs, and jury service.
Passing the #EqualityAct would be a critical step forward in our efforts to end the invidious discrimination that LGBTQ people have suffered from for far too long. As Chairman of @HouseJudiciary, I pledge to do everything in my power to promptly move this bill.

So, today is particularly meaningful for me in light of what I experienced last summer. I was discriminated against for being a proud transgender woman. I was harassed, degraded, and physically assaulted at a restaurant in downtown D.C. (thread)

#EqualityAct
I was at a bachelorette party with about a dozen girlfriends. We were having a great time, and near the end of the evening, I went to use the restroom and was asked to show ID. When I refused and went inside to one of the stalls, the male employee followed in moments later.
I could hear him searching every stall (in a crowded women's restroom) and then leaving a bit later. When I exited the restroom, he was waiting there with the manager, another man. I was asked to show ID again, and I refused, citing D.C. law. I showed this law to the manager.

@charliekiss @Tara_Hewitt 1/ You are aware that NHS trust patient databases have, for some time now been required to have fields disclosing transition? Not the central one of all names, addresses, phone numbers, NHI number, & GP, fortunately though. I think I've avoided being so recorded, have you?
@charliekiss @Tara_Hewitt 2/ They did try to get it as required information in all electronic referrals, but we stopped that, but there's a national advisory committee run by all all the royal colleges pushing for it. It is likely the data from Equality Monitoring forms is used to fill gaps in the records
@charliekiss @Tara_Hewitt 3/ As you know, NHS records show current gender; they added a "Sex at Birth" field, which is labelled as "this will normally determine medical treatment". Yes, Really. They got that in without testing, consultation, or notice. I'd love to know what @UKTELI has done about it.

🌈 Thread on the #LGBT record of Cory Booker
2012:Mayor Booker "Dear God: We should not be putting civil rights issues to a popular vote subject to the sentiments or passions of the day, No minority should have their civil rights subject to the majority"
Booker is so correct on this take. Amendment 1 and Prop 8 were extremely painful for #LGBT people. We woke up the next day looked around and forever wondered who voted for us, who against. The majority should never never vote on minority rights.
Booker goes on to talk about #LGBT Americans being second class citizens. "Its ridiculous and offensive we are even having this debate, it should have been done years ago." 2012
