BREAKING: The longest stand-off in history comes to an end!
@RescueMed transferred the 27 people on board of #Etienne to the #MareJonio and are now looking for a safe port. Once more, EU authorities failed to prevent offshore imprisonment and the civil fleet had to intervene!
@RescueMed transferred the 27 people on board of #Etienne to the #MareJonio and are now looking for a safe port. Once more, EU authorities failed to prevent offshore imprisonment and the civil fleet had to intervene!
While we are relieved that the 27 people are finally off the #Etienne, their ordeal is not yet over. They need to disembark as soon as possible! This saga is, once more, another low point for Europe, clearly showing its desire to deter those seeking safety no matter the costs.
Malta’s behaviour vis-à-vis the rescued will go down as having caused the longest stand-off in history – a shameful record to hold. Once more, in light of European failures and crimes, activists of the civil fleet had to step up. Solidarity with @RescueMed!
A relative demands freedom for his brother now detained on the vessel #Etienne for 23 days. He writes: "Please, let my brother Osman and the other 26 refugees disembark in Malta, let them free!"

"On August 3 my brother Osman called me from #Libya. He said he would leave for Europe at night in a small boat with 25 other refugees. The boat did not make a very good impression on him but he really could not stay in Libya any longer. That was the last time I spoke with him."
"I was more and more desperate, because I feared he had drowned or had been taken to an detention center by the so-called Libyan coast guard. Then on August 20, I finally received a photo of him. It confirmed that Osman was brought on the vessel #Etienne. My brother is alive!"

Il mercantile #ETIENNE della compagnia @MaerskTankers sta monitorando la barca ma non sta soccorrendo. Temiamo fortemente che sia #Malta che il mercantile stiano aspettando la cosiddetta guardia costiera libica per riportare forzatamente le persone in una zona di guerra. 2/3
Un respingimento verso la Libia violerebbe il diritto alla protezione e allo sbarco in un porto sicuro. Chiediamo a RCC Malta e a @MaerskTankers di rispettare il diritto internazionale e assicurare soccorso, non un respingimento forzato verso un posto dove si rischia la vita. 3/3

The cargo vessel #ETIENNE of the company @MaerskTankers is monitoring the boat but not rescuing the people. We have strong concerns that both #Malta and the cargo vessel are waiting for the so-called Libyan coastguards to come and forcibly return the people to a warzone. 2/3
A push-back to Libya would violate their right to protection and to be disembarked at a port of safety. We call on RCC Malta & @MaerskTankers to comply with intern. law & ensure a rescue and not a forced return to a place where the migrants have to fear for their lives. 3/3
