As of today, ICE has 943 confirmed cases. That’s a 53% positive rate. It’s clear that #COVID19 is spreading quickly in ICE facilities—leading to a shockingly high rate of positive cases. This is inhumane. More lives are at risk each day that we don’t pass my #FIRSTAct. Image
The #FIRSTAct is simple: it would ensure we keep immigrants safe by prioritizing release & ability to heed public health guidelines. ICE is keeping immigrants in conditions that endanger the public health of everyone, from immigrants and detention center staff to their families.
Today, ICE facilities have 965 cases with a 53% positive test rate.

Every day we don’t pass my #FIRSTAct, more immigrant lives are put in danger. We can’t afford to delay this any longer. Immigrants must have access to the same public health precautions as the rest of us. Image

The death of Mr. Carlos Escobar-Mejia was entirely preventable. On March 23, I led colleagues in calling for ICE to prioritize the release of individuals over 50 & with underlying health conditions. Instead, ICE attorneys asked a judge to pray for him. sandiegouniontribune.com/news/immigrati…
Immigrants will continue to lose their lives as long as this administration continues locking them in cages without health care, hygiene products, & human dignity. Immigrants deserve better. We MUST require ICE to focus on releasing people, especially vulnerable populations.
This crisis requires us to rethink our immigrant detention& incarceration policies to restore the kind of humanity that represents the best of us. I'm proud to sponsor the #FIRSTAct & Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act to begin taking these steps.

In the past few weeks, @ICEgov has found cases of #COVID in immigration detention centers in 13 states & done little to respond. That’s why I, w/ @SenBooker, am proud to introduce the Federal Immigrant Release for Safety and Security Together (FIRST) Act.
The #FIRSTAct calls for the immediate release of people in detention centers who are under 21, over 50, or have a vulnerable health condition.
It also calls for ICE to review the custody of ALL immigrants in detention in order to lower the detention population & to release those that don't pose a risk to public safety. Social distancing in a detention center is an oxymoron. #FIRSTAct
