I began teaching in Florida 19 years ago. I was told by the then Superintendent "you're not going to get rich, but there is a good retirement and decent benefits to help out"...something passed along to ALL new teachers in that time frame.
Things have changed.
Nowadays, new teachers are told: you can be released in the first year for any reason; you'll never have any job security with your annual contract; any raises will be tied to your performance on an onerous evaluation that takes into account...
the performance of students you may not even see in class; your job will be "managed" by administrators who are afraid for their jobs and make decisions based on the "performance" of students who are tested more than 70 days in the school year (secondary level)
