The latest figures about the 10000s of #britsinFrance #latvia #luxembourg #malta who haven't applied for residence makes alarming reading. With a #harddeadline of #30June, my latest piece for @ukandeu examines the #stats 1/

It addresses who might fall between the gaps - building in my experience in working with British citizens living in France over the course of the #brexitnegotiations 2/

And calls for these countries to extend their deadlines for applications and develop communication strategies to target hard-to-reach populations. And I'm not alone @BritishInEurope have released a statement to the same effect 3/⬇️⬇️⬇️britishineurope.org/articles/75313…

I've been looking a little more into the data behind this article this AM and want to focus on the need to look at the disaggregated figures - WHICH #EUcitizens are being turned away at the UK's borders is the question we should be asking #THREAD 1/

Looking at the passenger refusal data for Q1 2021 and sorting to look exclusively at EU citizens, this is the picture broken down by nationality 2/ assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
Guessing everyone can see #Romania there in the top spot? And by a loooooong way. Across this dataset for Q1 2021 it is unusual for any country to have numbers of refusals in triple figures—only Bulgaria (199), Poland (140), Eritrea (125) and Iraq (107) are in this category 3/

Thread: @mrjamesob a friend heard on show this morning & that you were surprised British applications for a Ryanair cabin crew would be ruled out by the following requirement -
Applicants must have unrestricted right to live and work in the EU.

independent.co.uk/travel/news-an…
@mrjamesob We had that as #EUcitizens.
#Brexit removed that right from us on Jan 31, but we do have right to live/work in Europe during transition while UK observes rules of single market. On Jan 1 2021, we lose that right. I wrote about this ages ago, see pinned tweet
@mrjamesob 'Freedom of movement' gave us right to live/work countries in single market, 30 in total.
(If you want to stay for over 3 months, you need to prove income or financial resources &
have health insurance cover). UK could have used those controls on immigration & did not.

Since we started our little adventure in a motorhome I have realised there is an entire community of people, often retired Brits and other people from Northern Europe, taking advantage of FOM to spend their healthy retirement years in warmer climes using our #FOM. #brexit
There are no Schengen visas required at the moment as EU citizens. Many campsites we have come across in France, Portugal and Spain contain long term campers, people either take a permanent pitch and come and go as they like or they take a 6 month pitch over the winter months.
I believe there may be thousands of people enjoying this life of motorhoming and caravanning when they can retire or semi retire. It can be pretty cheap, it’s hassle free and there is even a sense of community amongst the longer term campers that you might not get when working.

@alexandrabulat @TonyP12490831 Some of us have been banging on about the loss of this precious right, repeatedly, since this whole #Brexit nightmare fiasco began.

Here's an example of a thread on it:

@alexandrabulat @TonyP12490831 Stripping us of reciprocal #FreeMovement rights shows how regressive #Brexit is.

There are parallels between our country's lamentable treatment of the poor in the past (the Poor Laws from 1587 to 1967) with what the Tories are up to now:

@alexandrabulat @TonyP12490831 I've made dozens of memes to try to get the message across of just how damaging the loss of the right of #FreeMovement will be. Sometimes a picture can do more than words.

Two-thirds of Brits want to keep this right. There's no mandate for .@Conservatives to strip it from us.

What the hell is @jeremycorbyn doing?
Why is he enabling #Tory #Brexit?
Is this the final betrayal?
No, it isn't.
It's the predicted effect of decisions taken 2-3 years ago. All things considered, it's not as bad as it could have been (thanks to #StopBrexit crowd).

Thread.

To understand why, I need to outline 2 important mechanisms that most people, politicians and commentators seem to ignore, dismiss or simply don't get. They have different and somewhat opposite consequences, but are both decisive in the current & foreseeable predicaments.

1st and foremost: the biggest constraint that applies to political decision-making comes from the past decisions & policies.
It is a massive constraint.
Cameron COULD NOT convincingly campaign for #Remain, because his own policies CREATED the discontent channelled by #Leave.
