Revolutionizing decentralized storage with high throughput & low fees ⚡️

A threat to the Web2 cloud behemoths ⚔️

Call it the decentralized Dropbox or Airbnb for cloud storage ☁️

Here's an in-depth look at @Filecoin 🧵 Image
🤔 Think of Filecoin as an online marketplace to store data, where you can rent out storage just as you'd rent a room at @Airbnb

The idea behind Filecoin was to provide a decentralized solution to online storage providers & protocols & eliminate the need for central data storage
💡 Why Filecoin?

💾 Dependable data storage on a decentralized P2P network

🔐 Resilience to hacking, censorship, & outages

💰 Incentives for honest actors & participation

🔨 Unique business model for users with bidding on the open market

@Filecoin recently launched #FVM, a revolutionary runtime environment for smart contracts on their network & we at Lighthouse, are now fully equipped to support projects building on FVM!

Here are some important updates from us 👇
The Filecoin Data Depot is now online, making deal-making easier than ever before. You can upload your files, generate CARs, and get CAR links all in one place.
Check it out at data.lighthouse.storage
But that's not all! Our Lighthouse Files dApp now supports FVM too! Not only can you store your files on the Filecoin network and save money, but you'll also have the added benefit of access control.

Head over to files.lighthouse.storage to check it out.

What is FEVM?

1/4 The #FEVM is an implementation of the #EVM on the #Filecoin network. It allows developers to port EVM-based smart contracts onto the #FVM, where they are called actors, and is compatible with #EVM development tools such as #Hardhat, #Brownie, and #Metamask.
2/4 The #FEVM is designed to allow existing smart contract developers familiar with the #EVM ecosystem to quickly begin porting their existing applications and writing new applications on top of the #FVM.
3/4 Once Milestone 2.2 of the #FVM roadmap is complete, developers will have the option to deploy actors on either the #FEVM or native #FVM, depending on their performance requirements and tooling preferences.

As you may know, the deployment of the Filecoin Virtual Machine (#FVM) to Filecoin mainnet is upcoming on 🥧day, March 14!

🧵 incoming – here is all you need to know about the FVM 👇
1/ FVM is the execution environment for running custom code on Filecoin. It is multi-runtime, secure, and efficient. As of March 14th, you’ll be able to deploy EVM smart contracts (and more) on the Filecoin network. 🤝
2/ This enables anyone to interact with Filecoin’s state – including metadata and transactions governing what and who stores data on Filecoin – by simply deploying on the network! 🏛️

While everyone was looking at L2s, Fantom ( $FTM ) found a way to push the limits of a L1.

They are preparing to release the #FVM by the end of this year.

Let's simplify:

☑️ What is the #FVM?
☑️ What are the upgrades?
☑️ When?

🧵👇
1.) What's the problem with EVMs?

The EVM has a lot of limitations.

One workaround is to build another blockchain layer on top of it called "Layer 2".

Fantom, a Layer 1, took a different approach.
2.) What is $FTM?

Fantom is a Layer 1 Blockchain running since 2018.

The performance is extremely fast and has low gas fees. It is also EVM Compatible.

1/11 Come with me below the surface 🧊

As promised, a short thread on exactly why Fantom's:

→ true finality
→ no segmentation
→ shared security
→ shared liquidity
→ 99.9% uptime

features are more interesting points than #Fantom's low gas cost and rapid transactions 🧵 ↓
True finality is the state of a transaction after it is submitted.

When a $FTM txn is submitted & seen by the network, that's it. It is final. There cannot be a chain reorg/rollback.

@AndreCronjeTech: "Results are time ordered & require no additional rounds of communication."
Why is this important?

For one: to be embraced by the mainstream, transactions need true finality. Users prefer not to wait any period of time while "confirming blocks" on their transactions.

Reorgs impact the finality of txns, which is not good for dApps UX and complicates UI.

What is #FVM? [🧵]

A lot of people are talking about #Fantom Virtual Machine.

Almost everywhere you can see people claiming that “it’s the future” or “it’s gonna change the game”

But many still don’t know how or why.

So let’s understand what we are talking about.

A Thread🧵
In general, there are two types of virtual machines used by blockchains:

Let's give them a brief definition.

🧵/2
1) Stack-based: all the operations are performed using the “stack” data structure and PUSH and POP instructions.

Ethereum uses this type of virtual machine.

What is #FVM? [🧵]

A lot of people are talking about the #Fantom Virtual Machine. Most conversations, however, simply state that “it’s the future” or “it’s gonna change the game”

But many still don’t know how or why.

So let’s discuss.

🧵/1
First, if you haven’t yet, definitely listen to the latest interview from @milesdeutscher with Fantom CEO Michael Kong.

He touches on the topic of what they are trying to achieve.

🧵/2
Unfortunately this is still a bit ambiguous. So let’s dive in further.

In the interview Michael talks about research done by university students and professors. Well, here is a publication outlining some of the EVM limitations he discusses: arxiv.org/pdf/1910.11143…
