First up, #WHO, in latest ‘interim guidance’ of 1 Dec, on ‘potential benefits & harms’ of #masks: apps.who.int/iris/bitstream…. (note 1st ‘potential benefit’ is ‘reduced spread of respiratory droplets’ - which is not actually the same as reducing transmission, is it?) 
But you’re convinced the benefits outweigh the harms and go for masking. I mean, forcing people to keep a piece of fabric/paper and plastic on their faces, how hard can that be, eh? Well, here’s the WHO’s most recent interim guidance again. It’s not as simple as it looks, is it?

A descriptive analysis of existing literature presented a #SARSCoV2 risk-chart from asymptomatic people in different settings and for different occupation times.
Lead authors (@trishgreenhalgh) noted that this is an indicative table; and not quantitative or predictive.

Great overview of occupancy (indoors/outdoors), ventilation (well/poorly), type and level of group activity (silent, speaking, shouting), time duration and face coverings --> and risk of #SARSCoV2 transmission.

Another hasty & necessary U-turn by government, but once again ill-thought out. Only mandating masks in schools in “high risk” #COVID19 areas will create divisions & stigma between pupils & areas. And it’s *not preventative* - once again waiting for an outbreak b4 taking action.
Where is the government's *public information* campaign with #facecoverings? Unless it is worn properly, stored safely, washed frequently AND in addition to handwashing, social-distancing measures it will not be effective in reducing coronavirus transmission. @IndependentSage
It is unfair of Boris Johnson to leave it to headteachers to assess whether #facemasks should be worn by 2ndary pupils in areas where it’s not mandatory. Where is the government’s leadership on #COVID__19? Why is the government not sharing the science with schools? #BackToSchool

Debate (#NL) over face covering or not. On #RIVM/#OMT's advice, @MinPres and @hugodejonge from @MinVWS have unequivocally told us that there is little conclusive evidence (agree) and masks do not work (do not agree).

Recovery planning taking place now must incorporate the v real likelihood of a COVID19 + Flu wave in the winter.
They identify 4 challenges:
1. Large resurgence of COVID-19 nationally, + local/regional epidemics. Peak in hospital admissions & deaths Jan/Feb 2021, similar magnitude to 1st wave, coinciding with period of peak demand on NHS. ~119,900 deaths, over double number in 1st wave.

Thinking about this a bit more - the #smokefree #facecoverings comparison. I do think it is relevant, but with caveats. In March 2016 I visited a main railway station in Scotland the day before and the day after the smokefree law came in. 1/5
The day before, people were smoking on the concourse, in cafes at the station and elsewhere. The next day, no one I saw was smoking. Not a single person. The difference was sudden and really noticeable. Plus in time, data showed that overall compliance was strikingly high. 2/5
Last week I visited a local large supermarket. I’d say fewer than one in five people were wearing face coverings. I went back just now, the 2nd day of it being mandatory. Almost everyone, with a couple of exceptions, was wearing a face covering. 3/5

It's a hot topic why I'm not ordering a requirement to wear #masks at this time. To be clear, in alignment with @WHO, @PHAC_GC, & @CPHO_Canada, I absolutely recommend we wear #FaceCoverings when we can't keep 2 m #PhysicalDistancing. Here are 3 reasons why I don't require it: 1/8
1. Enforcement. A public health order requires a court filing and an appearance before a judge every time one wishes to enforce it on a person/business. An order would be basically unenforceable. If we don't enforce, it's effectively just a recommendation (already done that). 2/8
2. Strength of science. While science increasingly supports #facecoverings are likely effective at slowing #COVID19 spread, research is still weak. E.g. @TheLancet systematic review finds much potential benefit, but only “low certainty” that effective. thelancet.com/journals/lance… 3/8
