Although I am represented by @emuftunion, I stand in solidarity with @EMUAAUP. Here is the email I sent to my students earlier today: Next, please realize that the faculty on strike are not in anyway doing this to hurt students. Faculty are overworked and underpaid (1/4)
and unsurprisingly this will lead to short- and long-term impacts on teaching quality at EMU. While this may cause issues in the short-term for you, faculty is trying its best to get fair wages for themselves in order to be on top of their game. All faculty on strike, (2/4)
that I am personally aware of, worked overtime over the past week, even without being on contract to minimize disruptions for you, the students. Please, please be patient with them. (3/4)

My job now is to be on the picket line. I’d rather be a professor. But, until @EMUAAUP gets what’s fair, that’s where I’ll be #FairContractNow
We need your support. Everyone's: alumni, students, sports fans, community members. Anyone who loves EMU and having strong public higher education in SE Michigan. Here are a few things you can do to help out:
1. Follow @EMUAAUP on twitter or via Facebook to get updates on the negotiations. Please note that EMU's public relations arm, EMU Today, is *not* a neutral, or reliable, source of information facebook.com/aaup.emu/

Our 8th bargaining session with UIUC administration just kicked off! Once again, the admin's bargaining team arrives without a full contract proposal for us. Follow this thread for live updates on the session.

#UniversitiesWorkBecauseWeDo #WeAreGEO #FairContractNow
GEO Lead Negotiators Essam & Karla again express an interest in expediting the admin's line of questioning re our contract proposals. We ask why, again, the admin refuses to provide us with their questions in advance to streamline things. They provides no clear answer in response
The GEO leads note that @UofIllinois has the resources to be near the top of the Big 10 in terms of wages for its grad workers. Currently, UIUC ranks near the bottom of the conference. Our wage proposal rationale is based on our peer institutions whose grad are also unionized.

THREAD: We need your help, y'all. You probably saw Provost Feser's email Monday announcing salary increase program. While the he attempted to positively frame his proposal, it's an insidious attempt to undermine bargaining efforts and the core mission of our #union. Here's why:
The Provost's "salary increase program" was initially presented as a MOA (memorandum of understanding) at the very end of the bargaining session on Monday, leaving no opportunity to negotiate, ask questions, or respond. What's more? We only were given 3 days to accept or reject.
In the e-mail to faculty he presented an implied ultimatum to #union members. Either accept an ambiguous and inequitable salary increase and forego all bargaining for FY2020 salary increases (more on that next), or continue bargaining.

A little labor/class history as CPD arrests members of the #ChicagoTeachersUnion for demanding better working conditions for themselves, and better learning conditions for their poor/working class students:

CPS staff who are J1 visa holders received program emails expressing "concern" that picketing might look unfavorable come time for their visa renewals. This is an intimidation tactic.

Call #Lightfoot at 312 744 3300 and tell her #FairContractNow!

#CTUSEIUStrike #SanctuaryNow
From @Anakbayan_Chi member: "Sometimes employers and/or programs get around certain labor laws by arguing that J1 visa holders aren't workers but 'exchange participants' under J1's cultural exchange mission."

"J1 visa holders rack up debts paying recruitment fees so that they can work here, only to face exploitative working conditions and retaliation when they fight for their rights."

I was a CPS student from 2nd grade until graduating highschool. And due to the culture of Chicago, especially communities of color, a common question when someone says they’re from Chicago. Is “what highschool did you go to?”
I went from a school that is now closed (Goldblatt), to one (Leslie Lewis) that is 86% low income but that *now* has a school rating of 1. Not when I was there haha. To a hs (Lane Tech) that is selective enrollment.

As a young educator, I participated in nonprofit teacher training program where it was drilled into us that class size didn't matter, that students' ability to learn was dependent entirely on our abilities and techniques as educators #FairContractNow #PutItInWriting Image
The program was funded by the biggest names in the private sector, at the height of the charter school push. It's rhetoric was devoted to convincing us that the culpability for the disfunction in public ed. lay with students and teachers #FairContractNow #PutItInWriting
This rhetoric was toxic, not just because when we failed in many of our efforts as inexperienced educators we were made to blame ourselves and our students, but also because we were trained to look away from the roots of inequity in public ed. #PutItInWriting #FairContractNow

More @ChiPubSchools/@chicagosmayor budget analysis. What they say: more $ for schools! What their budget does: CUTS $100k+ for 200+ schools. CUTS $500k+ from 43 schools. Mayor, put your promises in writing - in an enforceable contract. #FairContractNow
@ChiPubSchools @chicagosmayor It gets worse. For social workers, they claim they're adding 35. But the budget and position files tell a different story. The 6/19 position file shows they had 470 SW positions. But For FY20, the budget shows 458 social worker positions - a CUT of 12 jobs.
@ChiPubSchools @chicagosmayor All this while the TIF slush fund is UP $180M over last year, to more than $840M. At least $200M of that is coming right out of revenues that SHOULD be going to schools. But @ChiPubSchools has allocated less than half that - $97M - to the FY20 budget.

Analyzing school budget from
@chicagosmayor
-- and those claims of more school nurses are actually CUTS. #FairContractNow
@chicagosmayor The budget narrative says they are increasing nurses by 30. The FY20 budget report shows they have budgeted for 127 certified School Nurse positions (and 91 Health Service and 124 Hospital Licensed practitioner Nurse positions).
@chicagosmayor The position file from last year showed 127 school nurses (93 health service and 127 HLPN positions) – so where is the increase? In fact – the FY19 budget shows they originally budgeted for 145 school nurses – so the budget they produced shows a DECREASE.
