21st century India: This @INCIndia MLA's demand that women be forced to seek parental consent to marry so as not to "hurt sentiments" of parents, is a reminder that BJP's poisonous "love jehad" lie flourishes in a larger climate of social & political hostility to women's autonomy
In my book, Fearless Freedom, I make the case that violence against the autonomy of women & LGBTQ persons is the most widespread and harmful kind of gender-based violence in India, one that hides in plain sight, masquerading as "safety" & protection. @PenguinIndia @sorcerical
If you are interested in understanding how India got to the point where a ruling party can openly seek to criminalise interfaith marriage with "love jehad" ordinances, if you want to understand how to fight back, do read #FearlessFreedom. (Yes, plugging my research, hard work!)

Hey @sharmarekha - what on earth is a "love jehad" case? Any case in which a Muslim man and Hindu woman are in love? How dare you remain in your chair as @NCWIndia chief & use a term that a) treats women as property of communities b) hates Muslims? You bring shame to NCW.
Dear @sharmarekha - I have researched the so-called "love jehad" claims extensively (written a whole book about it) and am yet to find a SINGLE case where such claims have been vindicated. Please tell us a single case where the "crime" of "love jehad" has been proved.
In my book #FearlessFreedom @PenguinIndia, I profile the courageous women who have had to take on bigots like you, who sadly head courts and women's commissions and ministries. Remember the supposed Meerut "love jehad case"? It turned out to be a love case, they're married now.

I argue in #FearlessFreedom: Reimagine #RakshaBandhan, not as a shackle but as a bond where siblings protect each other. Protect your sibling who wants to come out as gay or trans. Uncouple protectiveness from restrictions on women’s rights. @thewire_in thewire.in/women/intervie…
My book #FearlessFreedom (@PenguinIndia 2020) discusses #RakshaBandhan as part of the patriarchal ideology of guardianship. The same ideology that plays out in Saudi Arabia guardianship & rape laws. We need to reminagine #rakhicelebration as #SamaantaWaliRakhi ImageImageImageImage
On #RakshaBandhan we should celebrate the women who became sisters in struggle - like Fatima Sheikh and Savitri Bai, like Satyarani Chaddha and Shahjahan Apa. Page from #FearlessFreedom, my book (@PenguinIndia 2020)
