Sperm counts around the world have halved over the past 50 years, with the pace of decline more than doubling since 2000, according to recent research on male fertility...
.
The biggest causes of deterioration of sperm cells are pollution, smoking, age, and certain health conditions.
DNA fragmentation of sperms can be of outstanding importance, and the test was officially included in the international guidelines in 2021...
However, there are still no official standards on the values of infertility and fertility.

Generally, a fragmentation below 25 per cent can be considered optimal; above this, the chance of spontaneous conception decreases...

Oh dear lord, great spirit divine,
Creator of all things, above and sublime,
What is to become of me, in this moment of time,
As I exist, lost and alone, in this world of grime? Image
If not me, then who, to navigate this path,
Of despair and darkness, where hope takes a bath,
Am I to be an orphan, for all my days to come,
With no one to hold my hand, in this world so glum?

If not now, then when, will I find my way,
Out of this abyss, where I'm lost every day,
Am I to lose in life's race, from now on,
Or will I find the strength, to rise at dawn?

Here is a festival from Odisha and odias which celebrates menstruation - 'Raja Parba'.

Raja is taken from the word Rajaswala, which means menstruating women. The people of Odisha believed that during the first three days Bhudevi (Mother Earth), the wife of Lord Jagannath undergoes menstruation and is given a ceremonial bath the fourth day.

The Aus Senate this Weds will vote on so-called 'three-parent #babies'. These would be #donorconceived babies, genetically the child of 3 people not 2, made by an unregulated, for-profit industry, where there are serious questions about the future for the resulting child. A 🧵
Three-parent babies are made from #mitochondrialDNA donation. For eg: you fertilise a would-be mother's egg, and a donor egg. You suck the middle (the pronucleus) out of both. You put the would-be mother's pronucleus in the 'shell' of the donor egg. You gestate the embryo.
This is to avoid a child inheriting mitochondrial disease from the mother. What it means is: the child inherits DNA from 3 people - bio father, the would-be mother, and the donor. This *is inheritable*. If it's a girl baby, DNA from THREE people will be passed on to her children.

Here is a prime example of how the baby-above-all-else narrative triumphs over fact in the #media: a 🧵. Let's start with criminal offences. In fact, overseas commercial #surrogacy is ILLEGAL for residents of NSW. Sydney, obviously, is NSW's capital. @smh fails to mention this.
International #commercialsurrogacy is also illegal for residents of the ACT and QLD. This article does not state this either. It fails to mention where these people are from. It does not question the legality of their actions.
Why is commercial #surrogacy a criminal offence in NSW? Well, because of 'considerable medical, ethical, legal and human rights concerns', which include the exploitation of surrogates and the resulting children. #fertility #infertility #law #ivf #donorconception #humanrights

It’s reassuring to see that it doesn’t affect chance of conception in female partners. 3/

New findings on #CovidVaccination and #Fertility!

Using the @BUPRESTOStudy, we show no association between #CovidVaccination in either partner and fertility among couples #TryingToConceive

A 🧵 on our new study in @AmJEpi #EpiTwitter (1/12)
doi.org/10.1093/aje/kw…
We enrolled couples who were #TryingToConceive without fertility treatment. Female and male partners completed questionnaires on lifestyle, health, and #covid19 infection and vaccination. We followed couples for up to 12 months to determine whether and when they conceived (2/12)
Then, we measured whether #TimeToPregnancy differed by vaccination status or infection history. We accounted for many factors (like occupation, income, etc.) that may be related to fertility and vaccination or infection (3/12)

What do we know about pregnancy, #COVID19 and vaccination? A thread.

@HSEImm @RCPI_news @RCPI_ObsGyn
(1/13)
Most pregnant women who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID – have mild or no symptoms and don’t experience serious complications.

However, there is increasing evidence that #COVID19 can affect your pregnancy.
(2/13)
For example, pregnant women with COVID-19 are at higher risk of preterm birth, high blood pressure, postpartum haemorrhage and stillbirth than those who are not infected with #COVID19.
In addition, some pregnant women with COVID-19 will become severely unwell.

Wondering if antibodies raised against #COVID19 #vaccines can bind to the placental protein syncytin-1 and harm #fertility?

Out yesterday! More data that addresses this question!

Spoiler alert: they don’t... 🧵

But why would anyone even think that such a thing might happen? Is it even worth researching?

The rumours that COVID19 vaccines would impact fertility were started by a vaccine skeptic who proposed that this might occur, so this is something that a lot of ppl may have heard. 2/
People who work in this area never thought this was very likely, for a number of reasons.

Not least, if this did happen COVID 🦠 would be associated with infertility or problems in early pregnancy, and luckily we don’t see that. 3/

People often see this and think: “people with less money and less education have more kids—so won’t the future population be overrun by poorer, less educated people?”
No! Because other things also determine a person’s education and earnings—like social institutions and individual behavior. People can be more educated than their parents.
