For #FieldworkFriday I'm having a little #FieldworkFOMO, so here's a field tidbit from a few years back on Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin Island) involving a polar bear 🐻❄️and creative shelter problem solving ⛺️ (1/n) 
It was day 4 of 21 days out in a remote part of Baffin Island, and things were going well--mostly good weather and productive science-ing. We woke up early to collect repeat water isotope samples from a pond near camp before planning to move camp up valley to another lake. (2/n)
Walking back to camp after being out for a couple of hours, something looked amiss. Our bright red tent was no longer upright. Adrenaline kicked in as we realized the most likely cause: a polar bear. We scanned the landscape and loaded a noise-maker into our shotgun. (3/n)

#FieldworkFriday features Taylorann Smith, who studies the physical enviro of Kelp Forests. Her research focuses on how attenuated flow can affect transport & cause microplastic accumulation in these ecosystems. Her research interests were inspired by an @EVNautilus internship...
Smith was an Ocean Science intern on the E/V Nautilus in Fall 2019. She was responsible for watching live deep sea footage, documenting discoveries, processing collected samples, and typing up reports of the 30+ hour ROV dives. Smith talks about her experience aboard... #MBGSA

For day one, here's me on the @JuneauIcefield in 2017. Cross-country skiing is one of the more efficient methods of glacier locomotion, and sleds are a great way to transport seismometers for deployment and pickup!

Here's a tiny moulin on Taku glacier. Moulins are vertical shafts in glaciers that can fill with water and drain into a glacier's internal hydrology. We skied by this one several times over a week last summer; the water level changed each time!

There are hazards on a glacier, so it's important to be prepared. In crevassed areas, we rope together with climbing harnesses so the team can help in case of a fall. Check out the fashionable helmets, sunglasses, & axes, too!

First up are photos from Miriam Jones @USGS. She has had to develop new coring techniques because of the inundation caused by abrupt thaw. Check out the giant peat popsicle - a great record that we can use to reconstruct past vegetation and carbon storage in the ecosystem.
#Permafrost field work often happens end of summer or fall when active layer is at its maximum depth. This allows us to really target the permafrost rather than the stuff at the surface that freezes/thaws. But sometimes we misjudge the weather! Here I am w/ frost probe in hand!
#Fieldwork Friday! Went out with ugrad to scout potential blue spotted #salamander habitat.

No #frogs calling yet, and much of ground still frozen. But it feels close! #Arthropods like beetles & spiders are out and about. And saw my first live & dead Ring-necked pheasants!

@FieldEcology - maybe calling & activity by next week? Listened hard but no chorus or wood frogs, or peepers at these ponds or those we passed while driving.
