Deezer told me about this practice a few years ago. I disagree with the writer’s statement that the only ones who lose out are “older out of touch-artists who think music should always be something meaningful and “culturally important” #Fixstreaming musicbusinessworldwide.com/an-mbw-reader-…
It is, however, true that I have a few musician friends who reverted to making this kind of “chill” music when they had kids - and discovered they make more from that than they did from streams of their artist albums…
And if they make more and shorter tracks, they can make even more, as they make the same from a one-minute chill track than a five-minute song they spent weeks on. This all dilutes the royalty pool and drives down rates. #FixStreaming #PaySongwriters

A rare Friday in Westminster to support the brilliant @KevinBrennanMP Bill to #FixStreaming

Here's why it's important 👇 Image
Musicians’ livelihoods have been shattered over the last year, with the inability to perform live at gigs, concerts, festivals, shows and in the recording studio.

This has massively increased the importance of streaming as a way of musicians earning a living.
Streaming has created huge opportunities for musicians.

But a gap in the law means that most streaming income ends up in the pockets of record labels, streaming platforms, and digital giants rather than in the hands of the musicians.

The #BrennanBill introduces a right to equitable remuneration for performers. This would mean a guaranteed income stream for all musicians whose performances appear on streamed tracks. It's a key ask of the #FixStreaming campaign...

Sometimes people look at the challenges artists, songwriters, and indie labels face in trying to earn sustainable revenues from recorded music and conclude "copyright is broken." Let's unpack that with a quick THREAD. #FixStreaming 1/?
"Copyright is broken" is an attractive bumper sticker; it expresses legitimate frustrations that might be felt by creators, audiences, etc. But it doesn't do much to advance understanding of the situation we're all in. 2/
To begin with, it's binary. It imagines copyright (a system that has evolved over hundreds of years that encompasses laws, abstract concepts, real-world practices, institutions) as something that can either be broken or unbroken. 3/

Today the @CommonsDCMS Committee publishes its report into the economics of music streaming. Here's a thread of the report's findings and recommendations. (1/25) #BrokenRecord #FixStreaming
Streaming has helped save the music industry following two decades of digital piracy but it is clear that what has been saved does not work for everyone. Issues created by streaming reflect fundamental problems within the recorded music industry. Streaming needs a reset. (2/25)
We urge Universal and Warner to look again at the issue of unrecouped balances with a view to enabling more of their legacy artists to receive payments when their music is streamed. (3/25)

“Ek’s saying that musicians need to look at themselves less as artists and more as content creators. We have no muse to serve but the marketplace, and without adhering to the rapid 💓 rate that is Spotify’s demand for new food for their algorithm, our careers are bound to perish”
Let’s flip Spotify’s words:

“some streaming services that used to do well in the past may not do well in this future landscape, where you can't a (re)launch new groundbreaking music platform once every three to four years and think that’s going to be enough.” @eldsjal
"The streaming services today that are making it, realise that it's about creating a continuous engagement with their fans.

It is about putting the work in, about the storytelling around the service, and about keeping a continuous dialogue with your fans"

OH MY GOD. The deals between the majors and the streaming services.

The thread many of you requested. It gets a bit sticky, tricky and puzzling, but that’s the point.
The themes of this story: a lack of transparency and accountability for artists and a system that disdains the relationship between artists and their fans.

What makes telling this so hard is these deals are hidden behind NDAs for “reasons of commercial confidentiality”.
You won’t be surprised that I think this is bullshit. It is a serious flaw of the present system that the scrap for minor advantage between labels is paramount. Forget fair remuneration or helping artists understand their audiences…. Priorities you say.

.@CommonsDCMS evidence session on the impact of COVID-19 on theatre and live music is on now! Starting with evidence from @uk_theatre. Find out more and watch live > musiciansunion.org.uk/Home/News/2020…
.@uk_theatre has three asks of Government:

• the workforce, extending support and closing gaps in SEISS

• theatre recovery, including the thousands of small companies that make up the sector, and

• safeguarding the industry for the future

.@julianpbird notes that donations for streams of theatre productions so far is "remarkably low", making creating a show and putting it on for the sole purpose of being filmed is too expensive without additional support in the long term #SupportOurTheatres
