The new @IEA #WEO21 report sends a contradictory message: leave #fossilfuels in the ground, but increase extraction of minerals needed for #cleanenergy technologies. Can we avoid extracting both? A thread... #MakeCleanEnergyClean #fixtheWEO
Metals #mining is the leading industrial toxic polluter in the US per @EPA reporting & @UNEP says it contributes 10% of global carbon emissions. We must transition to #cleanenergy AND reduce dependence on new mining. earthworks.org/publications/r…
Current technology allows us to recover over 90% of battery metals, IF policy makers get behind it. @UTSISF research shows recycling can meet up to 55% of copper, nickel, lithium & cobalt demand. We can also improve battery design for disassembly & repair. #MakeCleanEnergyClean

The @IEA #WEO20 is out!

My deep-dive analysis:

🌞 solar 20-50% cheaper than IEA said last yr
🏭 coal in "structural decline"
⛽️ no peak yet for oil
🔥 gas to rise 30%
☁️ CO2 plateau…unless more climate action
🎯 + 1st-ever modelling on 1.5C

Backdrop is #COVID19 pandemic and huge uncertainty, so #WEO20 changes usual roster of scenarios:

CPS out (for now)
STEPS gets "delayed recovery" (DRS) side case
SDS more prominent than before
NZE2050 = 1.5C pathway

The choice for the world:

One intriguing little nugget I found is that the SDS seems to be getting more prominent in recent WEOs.

Chart by @joejgoodman confirms a suspicion I'd been forming. (Any tips on PDF text tools tho? This was a bodge!)

Great article by @ChloeFarand on how @IEABirol avoids addressing the contradiction at the heart of the @IEA: it wants to be relevant to the #energytransition but remains tied to #FossilFuels

IEA needs to #FixTheWEO

climatechangenews.com/2020/07/27/gre…
“IEA was set up and designed for a different era and it needs a radical transformation if it's still to have relevance in the modern era” - @KingsmillBond

“Given the IEA’s rhetoric and calls for leadership, omitting 1.5C is a pretty significant oversight” - @mckinnon_hannah
“By sitting on the fence and backing all forms of energy, there is a danger that they will perpetuate the unsustainable pathway we are on rather than showing what could be achieved in the future.” - @PWooders

A #FixTheWEO *THREAD* on how the @IEA is still boosting fossil fuels & acting as an obstacle on #climate with #WEO19.

TL;DR: It fails the biggest test – charting an energy road map to staying within 1.5°C, when that is a key to survival for millions of people. 1/
@IEA First things first: Why care? As Andrew Logan @CeresNews put it: "The @IEA is effectively creating its own reality. They project ever-increasing demand for fossil fuels, which in turn justifies greater investments in supply." 2/

@IEA @CeresNews When the world's 'gold standard' of energy analysis gives central billing to a 3°C scenario, @IEA normalizes a path we can't afford to take rather than focusing attention on the path we urgently need to pursue ➡️ below 1.5°C. 3/ ft.com/content/5c80f1…
