The #MTPTproject's 8th report into women aged 30-39 and why they are the largest demographic to leave teaching every year is almost available.

Here's some things we've learnt from our survey and interview respondents about the #returntowork period ... ๐Ÿงต 1/
Say 'yes' to #flexibleworking requests from returning parents. It's as simple as that. Not sure what you'd do once you've said 'yes'? Grab a copy of @FlexTeachTalent's book, "Flex Education" to help you find the workable solutions #MTPTproject 2/
@FlexTeachTalent Encourage the use of #KITdays and #SPLITdays - use them on site, remotely, or for #CPD, coaching and training purposes #MTPTproject #returntowork 3/

Reflections from today's start on a new report from our study into women aged 30-39 who have left teaching...

When mothers #returntowork and have to fight for their right to work #parttime / flexibly, involving unions... 1/

#MTPTproject @FlexTeachTalent @WomenEd @SuzanneBrown55
@FlexTeachTalent @WomenEd @SuzanneBrown55 ... visibly struggling, being signed off on stress, having to work a resentful 13 weeks of payback period full-time, knowing they have been forced to resign, sacrificing their values and time with their children, and these brave women's flex request is *still* denied... 2/
... it sends a very clear message to the pool of colleagues that come after them - those considering motherhood one day, those planning families, those expecting. The message is: "don't bother fighting, you won't win. Even Ms Courageous and Strong lost." 3/

We need to end the narrative that breastfeeding depletes mothers.ย

Breastfeeding reduces post partum haemorrhage, postnatal depression, heart attacks, strokes, dementia, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and autoimmune disease.ย  It's a sound investment and one most families want.
Instead we should focus attention on the midwifery crisis, overstretched GPs and health visitors, the determinants of birth trauma, gender based violence, a paternalistic medical culture, a lack of fully funded maternity leave, health and social inequality, systemic racism,
lack of flexible working, lack of high quality affordable childcare, barriers to parental leave, a gender pay gap, fuel poverty, formula poverty, food insecurity AND a society that doesn't value the caregiving that only they can give.

Looking forward to what should be an interesting conversation about the impact #Coronavirus has had on flexible working & the role of social policy in ensuring that we achieve better work-life balance for employees #FlexibilityParadox
First, Prof @HeejungChung discusses her inspiration behind the @WAFProject was from her own experience of the "myth of the academic summer" where the 3 month "break" is mostly spent working even when on holiday (eg reading academic ๐Ÿ“šs instead of for pleasure) #FlexibilityParadox
This, Chung argues, is an example of the "flexibility paradox", where those who have the most power to end up deciding how & when they work end up working the longest hours #FlexibilityParadox Image

A couple of key points that Caroline McEnery @TheHRSuite and @elmaoreilly @parallelldn shared this morning on the @IIBN webinar:

1. Get into the helicopter and look at your business strategy for the next 3, 6 and 12 months. Align your #HR strategy accordingly.

(1/5) Image
2. #Communication is critical. Have you daily check-ins, normal one-to-one meetings and don't assume people know what you're thinking.

3. Information on the #furlough system in the UK is changing all the time. Explain that to your staff and that you're keeping up to date. (2/5)
4. This is a time when your brand values really have a chance to shine or will be challenged. If you've said that you offer #flexibleworking for example, this is the time when your policy is being put to the test. Some brands are showing they're true to their brand promise. (3/5)
