I often get asked “why do kids need the flu shot?”, with the assumption that it’s not that risky for them to get the flu.

Well, have you heard of necrotizing encephalitis? 🧵
#MedTwitter #Pediatrics #neurotwitter
Acute Necrotizing Encephalitis (ANE) is a rare, but fatal complication of influenza infections in children. It presents with all the other symptoms of the flu, but also altered mental status and seizures (which may be difficult to initially distinguish from febrile seizures).
ANE leads to significant cerebral edema and can rapidly lead to cerebral herniation and death.
And for those that recover, less than 10% have complete neurologic recovery.

So the kids at our local high school are now referring to “Homecoming fever,” a cough/fever that is hitting tons of the student body since the dance on Saturday.

I’m so tired of perpetual sickness. I know you are too.

#GetBoosted & 😷 & #WashYourHands

#Pandemic #HoCoMD
Update: hearing from LOTS more parents on another platform that their kids have fever & cough post #Hoco2022. Sev have tested + for #Influenza A. If your kids aged 6m & up haven’t had a #FluShot, get it done. We don’t need more home/school/work disruption. 😷 + #WashHands.
Update #2: Posted about this in a high school parent group text as well, & now everyone I know is texting me this morning that their kid also tested pos for influenza A. There are prescription meds to both treat & prevent (if exposed) flu, so see a dr. #HoCoMD #Homecoming

This trend of #COVID19 followed soon after by #rhinovirus or #enterovirus (& we have it in our 🏠 , test-confirmed) is 👎👎. The 🫁 are taking a beating. Beware, especially folks w/ #asthma & other lung diseases. Masks on. 👀 recent CDC alert: emergency.cdc.gov/han/2022/han00…. #MedTwitter
If you are age 12+, it’s been at least 2 mos since your last dose of #COVID19 #vaccine or any # of #booster dose, & you haven’t gotten your updated #Omicron bivalent #boostershot, get it! Likewise anyone 6m old & up who hasn’t had a #FluShot this fall, go get one. Same day is👌.
There is unfortunately no vaccine vs #rhinovirus or #enterovirus. For that, our best bet is to improve air quality (open windows if possible, Corsi-Rosenthal boxes, etc), #MaskUp, & try to get those around us to #WearAMask too. Really concerned for folks with #asthma etc like us.

Dear @ImmunizeBC @bc_pharmacy @CDCofBC ->
I have a few Q's: (begin thread)
1/ Can you confirm whether #QIIV (high dose Fluzone) #SeasonalFluShots will be available in #BC?
(I read today via @RexallDrugstore "only in ONT" Will they be avail in BC at some point as well?) @BCPoli
Q: 2/@CDCofBC (and my doc) "Recommends Quadrivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine (QIIV) (Fluzone)" for ppl (like me) w/conditions such as:
65+, diabetes, asthma, RA ...
3/Specifically, I'd like clarification - if it in fact high dose *is/will be* available...who qualifies? Is it any/everyone 65+,or only those in #LTC, assisted living/1st nations?
This clip via @bc_pharmacy is confusing...

An average of ~3500 Canadians die from the flu in a typical year.

That number sounds so small in the wake of #COVID19, but that's a lot of people lost to a preventable illness.

But this year all our illness prevention efforts wiped out the flu. Compare to previous years. 1/5
People over 65, kids under 5, pregnant women, and people with underlying health concerns are at greatest risk from the flu's most serious complications, but risk isn't absolute and perfectly healthy younger adults die from this preventable disease, too. 2/5

#ForJudeForEveryone
I don't know what the flu might look like in the next year or two, but my hope is that the lessons we've learned through the pandemic will carry forward and we'll do a better job protecting ourselves and each other. In all this devastation, we saved kids this year. 3/5

Thread of public education messaging which can help us get #COVIDー19 under control.

Misconception #1: how #COVIDー19 is spread.

-covid is like glitter. When someone coughs or sneezes, talks loudly, sings, glitter is released into the air and lingers in the shared air.
Misconception #2: come back if “worse or short of breath”

-Most people can’t quantify short of breath, esp if they’ve never felt short of breath before

-Walk in place for 1 min.Sing your ABCs. If you can’t finish song or steps w/o breathing hard, you need to be seen immediately
Misconception #3: only old or unhealthy people die from #COVIDー19

-Everyone is at risk for #COVIDー19. I have cared for healthy 20,30&40 year olds who have died from covid or are now discharged home on oxygen because their lungs are destroyed.

-PS. Every age is a spreader.

.@IndyMayorJoe: local capacity limits & midnight closing order for bars and restaurants will continue. Unlike much of Indiana, Indy #coronavirus numbers aren't rising, but they aren't dropping much either, hovering at or just above 5%. @Marion_Health wants sustained rate below 5.
Hogsett reiterates recommendation, announced previously, to "get creative" with #Halloween celebrations rather than face-to-face #trickortreating.
Hogsett: "One of the great challenges of the #COVID era is putting our neighbors' health ahead of our own comfort. I can't make anyone do that, but I can and will ask."

1/ Q: How can I boost my immune system?

A: Today we focus on the importance of sleep health as an evidence-based strategy for improving your immune system during the COVID-19 pandemic.
2/ * Long-term sleep deficiency is associated with a range of co-morbidities (type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia) that put you at higher susceptibility & more severe outcomes of COVID-19.
3/ You can reduce your risk factors for these comorbidities by practicing good health behaviors, such as prioritizing sleep, exercise, and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables) Even little changes in lifestyle can add up over time.

A #SaturdayThoughts 🧵 on a common #Flu FAQ.

Q: What about people who get a seasonal flu vaccine and still get sick with flu symptoms?

A: There are several reasons why someone might get flu symptoms, even after being vaccinated against flu...👇🏽
(1/?) cdc.gov/flu/prevent/mi…
One reason is that you can become ill from other viruses besides flu- e.g. rhinoviruses, which are associated w/ common cold, cause symptoms similar to flu, & also spread and cause illness during #flu season. The flu vaccine only protects against flu, not other illnesses. (2/?)
A second explanation is that you can be exposed to #flu viruses shortly before getting vaccinated, or in the 2 week period afterwards that it takes to develop immune protection. This exposure may mean you become ill with flu before protection from vaccination takes effect. (3/?)

.@IndyMayorJoe announcing some loosening of #coronavirus restrictions. The announcement comes two days after @GovHolcomb announced he'll lift most statewide restrictions tomorrow.
Hogsett: Indy will increase capacity limits starting Monday. Restaurants/bars/nightclubs can seat up to 50% indoors, full capacity outside. Museums, gyms and entertainment venues can open at 50%.
Live entertainment can resume, with #socialdistancing precautions in place, including 10-foot buffer between stage and audience.

Churches and funerals move to 75% capacity indoors (there's already no cap outdoors). Midnight closing for restaurants and bars remains in place.

Does anyone have insight about the rationale here?

If flumist is just as effective this year, why not offer it as a covered alternative?

If it isn't, why offer for a price?

#onpoli #flushot Image
@carlyaluis can you offer any information on this? I'll get a lot of questions from parents.
Would anyone be able to look into this? Last year flumist was unavailable in Canada and I was asked about it constantly. This particular situation will raise a lot of questions. Curious about cost.

Alright. I'm seeing a lot of reaction and questions re: today's announcement from @fordnation re: the #flushot. Let's talk about it.
1) 'Why is the #flushot a top priority in their pandemic response?'

It's early September and we're already stretched beyond our testing capacity, before flu season has started. Symptoms for flu and COVID are similar, and fewer flu cases means fewer people needing COVID tests.
2) 'What does the flu have to do with #COVID19?'

They're 2 different *serious* respiratory illnesses. Early this year we heard a lot of 'just a flu' or '*not* just a flu'. Please forget this phrase. Flu kills ~3500 Canadians each year. We don't know what both together are like.

Thanks @SenAlexander, @PattyMurray, @GOPHELP & @HELPCmteDems for a productive discussion on the importance of vaccines today.

#ICYMI, my message was simple: #VaccinesWork!
My central message today was that equitable vaccination of America’s children and adults against preventable diseases is safe, smart, good for the economy – and critical in our fight against #COVID19.

Watch via @cspan: c-span.org/video/?c490558…
To ensure the benefits of vaccines for all Americans, we MUST acknowledge and address obstacles to vaccination, and in particular, those encountered by racial and ethnic minority communities.

.@yoyoel and @nickpickles we appreciate the extra measures you're taking to combat misinformation on this platform, but why isn't there a way to report it when we see it? It's a huge problem, in original posts and replies. Let us flag it for #COVID19 and all #publichealth issues.
Misinformation about #publichealth is deadly. I lost my son to the flu four years ago in an area with only ~34% #flushot uptake. Many don't take #fluprevention seriously b/c of misinformation.

GM America. Want to know more on masks? 😷

Surgical masks don’t provide YOU respiratory protection against diseases like #Coronavirus. They protect others from YOUR cough.

N95 masks require special “fit” testing. Wearing improperly can lead to ⬆️ face touching, & ⬆️ risk! Image
People are buying masks because they are worried & want to protect themselves. I get it. But here are some better/ proven ways to ⬇️ your risk of #Coronavirus AND #flu

1) Wash hands frequently 🧼 🤚
2) Stay away from those who are sick 🤒
3) Clean surfaces
Get your #FluShot
You are still MUCH more likely to be exposed to #flu than #Coronavirus.

Getting your #FluShot (it’s not too late) = ⬇️ risk of hospitalization, & the healthier you are, the ⬇️ your risk if you do get #Covid19. Also helps communities as you’ll likely use ⬇️ medical resources!
