Last month, @WMO reported that methane emissions are rising faster than ever.

Today, we explore how governments fail to tackle methane emissions from animal agriculture—and why we need to slash methane emissions now to tackle #GlobalWarming and ensure a livable future. 1/13 Image
2020 and 2021 saw the largest increases in methane emissions since records began, according to @WMO.

Their data indicates that biological sources, such as agriculture, are responsible, rather than #methane from gas leaks. @ConservationOrg reports. 2/13 conservation.org/blog/news-spot…
Animal agriculture contributes to global warming through GHG emissions, including methane and nitrous oxide.

Millions of ruminant animals raised for food globally, such as cows and sheep, emit #methane through a process called enteric fermentation. 3/13

As October comes to a close, we are taking a look at six articles that caught our attention this month. 👇1/13 Image
🚫In a piece published via @unherd, @JLewisStempel warned that the rise of vegan companies threatens to create a #FoodSystem similar to the dystopia described by Aldous Huxley in "Brave New World." 2/13

🔎The article failed to consider that a system run by massive agribusinesses that depend on industrially-produced crops and reproductive exploitation similar to #BraveNewWorld already exists.

@hemikim reports on modern #dairy farming. 3/13

When we talk about #FoodEquity and food shortages around the world, we often hear the term 'Food Systems' 🔄

But what exactly are food systems? And how are current #FoodSystems limiting our ability to #LeaveNoOneBehind?

A 🧵 ahead of #WorldFoodDay2022 👇
The global food system is a complex web of activities involving all the production, processing, transport storage and consumption and disposal of food (1)

🚜🧺🌽🍕
It includes not only the basic elements of how we get our food from farm to fork, but all of the processes and infrastructure involved in feeding a population, including policy and cultural norms around food (2) 🍴🍴

Russia's attack on #Ukraine has intensified calls for a transition away from #FossilFuels.

The war also highlights the need for #FoodSystem change. Today, we explore how #AnimalAgriculture fuels global crises by creating high levels of dependency between countries. 1/11👇
Ukraine produces large quantities of wheat, barley, rye, and #maize. Russia is the world’s top #wheat exporter.

The two countries taken together account for almost a third of the global wheat export market, @weizent reports via @CNBC. 2/11
cnbc.com/2022/02/23/imp…
Maize and wheat are just two examples of crops #meat and dairy producers feed to animals.

The #livestock sector currently uses 61% of global maize and 20% of global wheat as animal fodder, according to a 2021 study about #FoodSecurity. 3/11

The article claims that farmed animals “can be used to stimulate the growth of grasses to sequester carbon.” 2/9

1/ During the final session of the 2020 Religion News Association Annual Conference, I made this statement. What follows is my statement on the #abortion debate. #rna2020virtual Image
2/ Whoever builds the house sets parameters for possiblities within. Burned by gains of #CivilRights, seething from Supreme Court anti-segregation ruling (Bob Jones vs USA), southern White men constructed #abortion debate framework in 1983 as staging ground for cultural warfare.
3/ Pro-life vs Pro-choice is an inhuman frame, meant to draw battle lines, meant to set the stage for winners/losers. It is so last-century. And it is inaccurate. Those who built the pro-life frame have proven beyond a shadow of doubt, what they really cared about is white life.

🇺🇸 What about a U.S. #food policy? Is there even one to speak of right now? 🤷🏾‍♀️

Stay tuned during the coming weeks for more on a National Food Policy in the #UnitedStates.

... In the meantime, Molly Anderson and Ricardo Salvador give their take 👇🏾

The current U.S. food system is governed by a patchwork of uncoordinated policy frameworks and federal departments: #agriculture, #health, #environment, #energy, social security, #labor, #education.
So policies made at different levels of governance (e.g. municipal, state, tribal, federal) are often contradictory or disconnected from one another, leading to missed opportunities to support innovative local and regional #foodsystem initiatives already happening on the ground.

@PLAASuwc researcher Refiloe Joala @phfiphfi says there's a "silver lining" to #COVID19 in Africa's #FoodSyste: Shoprite across various African countries has had to seek local suppliers due to border closures. Rather than importing SA foods, turned to supporting local producers. Image
More generally, it will be important to get governments across the region to engage with food producers, traders & consumers (ie. all of us) about how #COVID19 is changing our #FoodSystem. Exporting SA's food supply chains is not going to be the answer for #foodsecurity in #SADC.
At #FoodSystem #COVID dialogue:
1. The Latin American model established parallel state institutions: ministries of agriculture focused on commercial farmers & agribusinesses, alongside ministries of agrarian reform focused on redistributing land & supporting family farmers

"Normal hunger" in SA is 25% of people go hungry. Recent #COVID19 survey shows this reached 47% in April, now over 50%. This is a crisis. Every waking moment everyone must focus on how there is hunger & starvation in a "food secure" country. Fix the #FoodSystem! #foodsecurity Image
1. Proposals that seem to be emerging from Minister @ThokoDidiza @Laurel_Oettle @Stephengreenb18 so far include: focus on urban agriculture, support informal food trade, identify & promote small-scale agroprocessing in niches (bread baking, maize milling) @FoodSystem #COVID19
2. More proposals to deal with #FoodSystem #COVID19 crisis: urgent land access for small-scale production, changes in public procurement from small-scale producers to provide assured market, commitment from corporate retailers to procure from small-scale producers & CSR.

Consumer co-operatives: solve the food crisis by bringing farmers & communities closer together.

Everyone can be part of changing the #foodsystem - and it requires collective action.

@maremadorah @kerenBenZeev @am_amponsah @KonHaupt. dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-0…
Spikes in food prices in the supermarkets are at the cost of the poor – both as producers and as consumers. This need not be the case.

Covid-19 shows in sharp relief how markets fail. Markets are social institutions. We build them, and we can change them. Let’s start now.
A “just recovery” from the Covid-19 crisis requires that we think beyond food relief, and make changes to our food system now. Those who are most vulnerable are often those who are producing food – including the farmworkers and the small-scale farmers.

Great comment on our #PandemicGardening survey "#Urbanagriculture has always been practised in #Australian cities...our 'allotments' were our backyards. As Andrea Gaynor has so beautifully documented in Harvest of the Suburbs, [our] backyards produced large amounts of food...
...with urban consolidation, millions of Australians no longer have large yards in which to grow food. We need to learn how to get productive growing space into cities-in public spaces, on the privately owned common property in strata schemes, on balconies, on verges, & on roofs.
#Covid19 has hopefully concentrated people's minds on the fragility of food supply lines. The supermarkets will not always have food in them. If we can supplement our food supply with leafy greens, herbs and fruit from our own gardens, we will be much more #foodsecure.
