1/ During the final session of the 2020 Religion News Association Annual Conference, I made this statement. What follows is my statement on the #abortion debate. #rna2020virtual
2/ Whoever builds the house sets parameters for possiblities within. Burned by gains of #CivilRights, seething from Supreme Court anti-segregation ruling (Bob Jones vs USA), southern White men constructed #abortion debate framework in 1983 as staging ground for cultural warfare.
3/ Pro-life vs Pro-choice is an inhuman frame, meant to draw battle lines, meant to set the stage for winners/losers. It is so last-century. And it is inaccurate. Those who built the pro-life frame have proven beyond a shadow of doubt, what they really cared about is white life.
🇺🇸 What about a U.S. #food policy? Is there even one to speak of right now? 🤷🏾♀️

The current U.S. food system is governed by a patchwork of uncoordinated policy frameworks and federal departments: #agriculture, #health, #environment, #energy, social security, #labor, #education.
So policies made at different levels of governance (e.g. municipal, state, tribal, federal) are often contradictory or disconnected from one another, leading to missed opportunities to support innovative local and regional #foodsystem initiatives already happening on the ground.

Land struggles are partly divided by tenure systems inherited from the past - eg. titled commercial farmland, public land, customary land. But joint visions and strategies are feasible. What way forward? #LandActivism
@PLAASuwc researcher Refiloe Joala @phfiphfi says there's a "silver lining" to #COVID19 in Africa's #FoodSyste: Shoprite across various African countries has had to seek local suppliers due to border closures. Rather than importing SA foods, turned to supporting local producers.
More generally, it will be important to get governments across the region to engage with food producers, traders & consumers (ie. all of us) about how #COVID19 is changing our #FoodSystem. Exporting SA's food supply chains is not going to be the answer for #foodsecurity in #SADC.

"Normal hunger" in SA is 25% of people go hungry. Recent #COVID19 survey shows this reached 47% in April, now over 50%. This is a crisis. Every waking moment everyone must focus on how there is hunger & starvation in a "food secure" country. Fix the #FoodSystem! #foodsecurity
1. Proposals that seem to be emerging from Minister @ThokoDidiza @Laurel_Oettle @Stephengreenb18 so far include: focus on urban agriculture, support informal food trade, identify & promote small-scale agroprocessing in niches (bread baking, maize milling) @FoodSystem #COVID19
2. More proposals to deal with #FoodSystem #COVID19 crisis: urgent land access for small-scale production, changes in public procurement from small-scale producers to provide assured market, commitment from corporate retailers to procure from small-scale producers & CSR.
Minister @ThokoDidiza of @DALRRDgov_ZA says a shortcomings in government's response to #COVID19 was inadequate attentiongiven to the enormous role of the informal food system: small producers, informal traders etc. She's engaging with civil society & business today #foodsecurity

A “just recovery” from the Covid-19 crisis requires that we think beyond food relief, and make changes to our food system now. Those who are most vulnerable are often those who are producing food – including the farmworkers and the small-scale farmers.
Great comment on our #PandemicGardening survey "#Urbanagriculture has always been practised in #Australian cities...our 'allotments' were our backyards. As Andrea Gaynor has so beautifully documented in Harvest of the Suburbs, [our] backyards produced large amounts of food...
...with urban consolidation, millions of Australians no longer have large yards in which to grow food. We need to learn how to get productive growing space into cities-in public spaces, on the privately owned common property in strata schemes, on balconies, on verges, & on roofs.
#Covid19 has hopefully concentrated people's minds on the fragility of food supply lines. The supermarkets will not always have food in them. If we can supplement our food supply with leafy greens, herbs and fruit from our own gardens, we will be much more #foodsecure.
