#OnThisDay in Labour history 5 years ago it was polling day in the 2017 general electionšŸŒ¹

While tens of thousands of Labour activists started knocking on doors, my day started with a meeting at the Cabinet Office with Karie Murphy to discuss arrangements if should Labour winšŸ§µ
Labour had a 24-point deficit when the campaign began. But in their final polls the major polling companies put the deficit anywhere between a 1-point and a 13-point lead for the Tories

In the last week we met 3 times with the Cabinet Secretary, as they planned for every outcome
Walking along Victoria Street (by Labour HQ) with a colleague in the early summer sunshine, and exhausted by 8 weeks of gruelling election campaign, I recall saying:

ā€œWhatever happens tonight, Iā€™m really proud of what weā€™ve done ā€“ I donā€™t think we could have done any moreā€

So, how many quotes does anyone want from Thucydides and other ancient sources about Pericles dismissing the views of the people when he didnā€™t agree with them..? #PeoplesPMQs
Pericles, at least in Thucydidesā€™ account, articulates a vision of democracy, true, but itā€™s one that is distinctly odd in a number of respects. And he is praised for *not* paying attention to the wishes of the people, unlike his successors, but for getting them to follow him.
Indeed, he was precisely the sort of elite politician who persisted in pursuing his own policy even after the citizens had voted against it, rather than accepting that heā€™d lost and should get over it.

Iā€™m seeing so much crap on @Twitter from people who are, essentially, anti Socialist Labour (Corbyn, the person, is only a figurehead) and all these people have a vested interest in keeping the centrist status quo. The PLP members who have opposed Labourā€™s move back to its roots
are prime examples of people who hold a deeply entrenched form of egotism that has driven them since the beginning of their political careers. They are so convinced of their own ā€œright to governā€ that they see nothing more threatening to themselves than the rise of democracy.
When Corbyn was elected as leader (the first time) the majority of grassroots members, who, letā€™s face it, are the ones who do the footslogging to get MPs elected, were re-energised and the message that Corbyn and his fellow socialists were putting forward found fertile ground.
