LOL! Just gotta keep that #nationalism thing alive, don't you, CNN? You can almost hear them desperately talking over the newsroom table:

"Come guys we gotta keep this thing going. America's gotta still be great, right? Somehow? Someway?"

The article itself is even more hilarious. All the ahistorical patriotic misreadings of the founding. "America is bending toward justice." There are still "reasons to wave the flag." Crispus Attucks. ANYTHING to avoid confronting this uprising as a critique of America itself.
Original title seems to have been "July 4th: is it worth celebrating?" Of course, THAT didn't make it past the editors. Can't ask an perfectly valid question like that which might actually question the cult of American nationalism. Image

Dr. King believed that we would "gain our freedom in America because the goal of America is freedom" He believed in the American promise of equality referring to the "sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of God".

On this Independence Day I ask you to consider a very simple question? Could Dr. King have spoken freely, marched peacefully and changed his country if he lived in the Soviet Union in the 60s.

As we watch the good people of Hong Kong lose the rights and freedoms we
take for granted - I think we should all stop a moment and thank God. We owe a great debt to our Founders for their idealistic vision, those who fought and died to keep the dream alive, and those who spoke for all to share these God given rights.

Happy 244th Birthday America.

America was so battered and bruised it’s difficult to determine the manner of death
So, let me run through the options as we lay America to rest.
We cannot determine what the exact cause is, but we do know the underlying causes
Genocide- For the deliberate mass murders across the Middle Passage of 2-4 million Africans, for the uncounted deaths of Native Americans
Disease – For the deliberate deaths of Native Americans from smallpox infestation, for Tuskegee experimentation,
for failing to act during a global pandemic, for intentionally sending infected blood to other nations
Exhaustion– For Black people working sun up to sun down in cotton, sugar cane, and tobacco fields, For those that worked for years after Emancipation because you hid the truth
