.@theirturn is right. For Happy there has been no escape from life on display for human entertainment, with the Bronx Zoo continuing to insist against all evidence that “Happy is happy” alone in an exhibit in a city where elephants don’t belong. #FreeHappy
We're currently preparing for oral arguments in Happy's case which we expect will take place this fall. In February the Bronx Supreme Court issued a decision that brings us one step closer to securing liberty and justice for Happy: nonhumanrights.org/blog/tuitt-dec…
Mara's long journey to @GlobalElephants sanctuary is a powerful example of what can happen when people, including zoo leadership, come together to restore an elephant’s dignity and autonomy instead of pretending there's no problem: nytimes.com/2020/08/09/sci…

Remember: for the Bronx Zoo this is all about optics. Happy & Patty might now be in the display yard at the same time but each has even less space & is still imprisoned in an exhibit that can't meet elephants' needs in a city where elephants don't belong. Image
In this video (starting at minute 20) you can see what little space Happy & Patty must share. Rather than sending them to a sanctuary, the Bronx Zoo chose to reduce the size of their abhorrently small outdoor display yard, dividing it into 2 small parcels.
We've been fighting in court to #FreeHappy since before the zoo euthanized Patty's companion Maxine, leaving Happy & Patty each alone. As our litigation continues, you can help by using this alert to contact the CEO of the nonprofit that manages the zoo: secure.everyaction.com/UXSSt2LxOk69OI…

Indeed! And any time we acknowledge the cognitive and social complexity of nonhuman animals and still insist they can be happy alone in exhibits, it's because we value our entertainment more than their lives. That's why we seek to #FreeHappy 🐘 from the Bronx Zoo to a sanctuary.
In the words of @tribelaw: "Given all we know about who elephants are, it’s time to acknowledge [Happy's] imprisonment is unlawful and to bring elephants into the circle of rightsholders." tinyurl.com/laurence-tribe…

.@EstherThePig, we’re honored you liked our tweet! 😍 Are you also a Brian May fan?
In the photo (taken a few years back) are Brian, NhRP President Steven M. Wise, and @AnneatSaveMe, who is a force for good for animals in her own right!

After almost a lifetime in captivity, 14 years of which she has been forced to live alone, 49-year-old Happy deserves to be freed from her imprisonment at the @BronxZoo and released to @ElephantsTN or @PAWSARK2000. #FreeHappy Image
At the @BronxZoo, which is managed by @TheWCS, Happy is confined alone, without the necessary companionship of other elephants, in a small enclosure that contains a one-acre outdoor yard, barren corrals, and an industrial holding facility. #FreeHappy Image
Dr. Joyce Poole of @elephantvoices has stated that the Bronx Zoo’s exhibit is, in fact, unable to meet Happy’s biological, physical, and psychological needs. #FreeHappy nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-ope…

Good news! Relying on key decisions in our US chimpanzee & elephant rights cases, the Islamabad High Court in Pakistan has “without any hesitation” affirmed the legal rights of elephants & other nonhuman animals. As a result, elephant #Kaavan will finally be freed to a sanctuary. Image
Justice Athar Minallah's decision is a light gleaming out from the cracks in the legal wall that has long separated humans from all other animals. Slowly but surely, with persistence on the part of all who fight for #animalrights, that wall is crumbling: tinyurl.com/islamabad-high… Image
May the NY and CT courts, who have in their hands the fates of elephants Happy and Minnie (both, like Kaavan, held in solitary confinement) soon follow suit to #FreeHappy and #FreeMinnie. Congratulations @0waisawan, @ftwglobal, and @cher on your hard-fought victory for Kaavan! ⚖️ Image

BREAKING: NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson has joined the NhRP, @yashar & many others in urging @BronxZoo to #FreeHappy & Patty to a sanctuary. TY @CoreyinNYC for your thoughtful leadership & support for their freedom! We call on all NYC officials & residents to follow his lead.

.@rubendiazjr @RitchieTorres @AOC @bpericadams @RepJoseSerrano, please join @CoreyinNYC in calling on the Bronx Zoo to release Happy & Patty to @PAWSARK2000 or @ElephantsTN. After decades of confinement, they deserve to live freely in an environment that can meet their needs.

TY @BiPiSci @SETIInstitute for sharing Happy's story & delving into the science behind her elephant rights case & why people around the world who care about elephants are urging @BronxZoo to #FreeHappy to a sanctuary. ALL elephants need freedom & the company of other elephants.
Inarguably, elephants need ample space to roam & make choices about where to go, what to do, & w/whom. Happy doesn’t have any of these opportunities at @BronxZoo, & she deserves to live the life that is only possible for her @ElephantsTN or @PAWSARK2000. #FreeHappy
In sanctuaries, 🐘 w/histories even worse than Happy’s have thrived, including forming bonds w/other 🐘, b/c they have freedom & space in an environment that can meet their needs. Tell @BronxZoo @TheWCS @JimBreheny & @CristianSamper that Happy deserves the same chance. #FreeHappy
