Anytime a debate kicks off about public transport in Indian cities, I think of a scene I saw on a late summer evening in 2006 (when I still used buses). I think it was route 422, going past Nizamuddin down to Badarpur Border. (1/n)

When I came to Delhi as a 17 yr old college student, inspired by Amitav Ghosh's Shadow Lines, would take a Blue Line Mudrika bus, for Rs 10 to take a round of the city. Blue line coz it had radio. Cheap travel is providing life skills to young women. #FreeMetroForWomen
With a shoe string budget, my choices were either to attend college, pay for the PG accommodation and food or explore the city. Although, unlike my male friends, who could travel to the nooks and crannies with a similar budget. #FreeMetroForWomen
Because getting assaulted in public space would have meant family making you pack bags, taking you back home to get married. Coz you didnt manage to keep stay safe during that one chance you were given to make a life for yourself by attending college in Delhi. #FreeMetroForWomen
