Osman Kavala davasının 1. duruşması başladı.

Duruşmadan çıkabilecek tek makul karar, mahkemenin bu adaletsizliğe son vermesi ve doğru olanı yaparak Osman Kavala’yı serbest bırakması olacaktır. #FreeOsmanKavala

1/ Tomorrow #OsmanKavala will have been held in a prison cell for 1,000 days.

In the almost 33 months of his imprisonment, he was acquitted once, had his imprisonment under another charge lifted as an indictment could not be drawn up.

#CrimeNotFound

2/ The two initial charges were baseless, devoid of credible evidence, and politically motivated. He is currently in prison under a third equally baseless charge, that of ‘espionage’, which would require him to have been in possession of secret information. This is absurd.
3/ For almost three years, the authorities have attempted to find it but there isn’t a crime to be found.

Five months ago, I was in the courtroom in Silivri prison, Istanbul, for the ruling that #OsmanKavala should be released.

But our celebrations were brief.

He was immediately rearrested.

Monday, will be Kavala's 1,000th day behind bars.

Osman Bey and the Snails! As our beloved colleague, Turkey's Osman Kavala spends his 900th day in jail, a group of composers and friends announce a new mini-opera, recorded in lockdown, taking inspiration from his friendship with two little gastropods.

In this time of isolation, sadly, things have got even worse for Turkey’s political prisoners (meaning the human rights activists, journalists and opposition politicians grotesquely accused of “terrorism.”)

Osman adopted two snails in jail. A very characteristic gesture. He is best known as a human rights activist and ambassador of culture. But his story of animal activism began in the 1980s with this intervention on behalf of turtles.
