Tens of thousands sit in immigration jail, separated from their families and unable to afford the rising price of freedom. You can help today, #FreeThePeopleDay, by donating to your local bond fund. communityjusticeexchange.org/nbfn-directory @bailfundnetwork
@bailfundnetwork Connecticut has the highest immigration bond amounts in the country - more than twice the national average. But the amazing team @migrantbailfund was still able to get 49 people released on bond in 2019 alone. Support their important work! #FreeThePeopleDay
@bailfundnetwork @migrantbailfund During the first ten months of 2019 judges in Virginia granted bond to more than 1,000 people in immigration jail. But many can’t afford the price and remain caged. @CIFFCville working to change that. cvilleimmigrantfreedomfund.org/give

I will be on here all day tomorrow tweeting for #FreeThePeopleDay. I hope some of you will join me. There's nothing quite like ringing in the new yr by working in concert w other ppl who care to get ppl free -- ppl who are currently being caged bc they are poor and/or a migrant.
This will be my 3rd yr working on #FreeThePeopleDay. The ask we extend is that folks donate the cost of a NYE drink to a local bail fund, or more if they are able and moved to do so. At least $25K of those donations will be matched. Helping to push the hashtag is also a big deal.
.@prisonculture spontaneously created this event a few years ago, the night before NYE. The idea took off and folks have since raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to get people free.

When judges set bail on my clients’ cases as low as $500, 87% of them cannot afford to pay it. That’s for offenses like trespassing & petit larceny.

It costs NYC, $475 a night to detain someone on Rikers’ Island.

You do the math.

When I started as a public defender, I thought judges set bail at $500 honestly - if mistakenly - believing that it was a token amount most people could pay.

Then I smartened up. Judges know exactly what we do: that $500 bail will hold poor people in jail & coerce pleas.
Until NYC and other cities do something about cash bail, please donate to bail funds across the country like @BKBailFund. $500 will buy a person’a freedom. A donation of $5 from 100 people gets us to $500.

(THREAD) Why should you give to @FianzaFund (FianzaFund.org/donate) on #FreeThePeopleDay?
We started the fund in collaboration with detained comrades in WTX and NM, who identified the need for a solidarity fund. Since January, we've posted over 50 bonds, made hundreds of $$ in commissary/phone payments, and supported families through bond hearings and release.
Grassroots fundraising and cmty volunteers allowed us to post nearly $300K in bonds this year, all without staff or overhead. We follow-up with people we bond out to help them navigate court dates and life outside detention.
