How long would the #COVID19 #pandemic have lasted without the #vaccine?

We have two ways to answer this question: the first is the #historical one, i.e. looking at the past and understanding how many years the previous pandemics caused by respiratory #viruses lasted. (1/9) Image
The available data tell us that all pandemics caused by respiratory #viruses lasted about two years:

-Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu), caused by an #influenza A virus of swine origin, lasted from April 2009 to August 2010.

-Influenza A H3N2 (Hong Kong flu), (2/9)
caused by an influenza A virus that emerged in 1968 and replaced the previous H2N2 #virus, which lasted until 1970.

Influenza A H2N2 (Asian flu), caused by an #influenza A virus that emerged in 1957 and replaced the previous H1N1 virus, which lasted until 1958. (3/9)

🔴 On Tuesday, Home Secretary #Braverman pushed through the #PublicOrderBill aka #AntiProtestBill with last minute changes

With 283 to 234 votes, the Bill was passed in the Commons.

With this, what #freedoms have we lost? 😰

A 🧵…
heraldscotland.com/politics/23059…
One of the most worrying of the changes is to do with the introduction of “disruption prevention” measures ⚠️

This means police can take absolutely draconian steps to prevent people from protesting, even if they have never been charged with a crime.
What are these “preventive powers”?
➡️Ban individuals from attending protests
➡️Authorise use of devices (tags) to monitor individuals
➡️Order individuals to remain at a certain place/for certain time
➡️Bar people from certain places/stop them from associating with certain people

I don’t know where to start with this profoundly ignorant selfish stupid tweet from @EstherMcVey1 who clearly has no compassion for the 100,000s of people who died or were damaged by #COVID19Pandemic - not least those unprotected in the #NHS due to lack of #PPE early on 1/
#masks do work. We reduced transmission in in centre #haemodialysis #patients radically once they wore masks door to door. 3% of all such #patients died in the first wave Esther & we were told off for giving them masks. 80+ #patients died at our centre alone. It was brutal 2/
Don’t take my word for it (though I’m way more expert than you @EstherMcVey1) - read this thread from @trishgreenhalgh who is a world expert on how #Covid19 is airborne & how #masks protect yourself AND others

And the please correct your dangerous ignorant tweet 3/

@NPR is doing its annual reading and tweeting of the #DeclarationOfIndependence. 246 years ago a group of men felt it so important that they risked everything to defy a King & start a path for a democratic republic. Today we’re seeing those values attacked by the stolen #SCOTUS
The #AntiDemocraticParty of the GOP passing laws & ideas to circumnavigate the will of #Americans. On this #IndependenceDay2022, it is time to not celebrate what happened 246 years ago, but to honor it by standing up for our #FellowAmericans ensuring that #Rights and #Freedoms
Are actually for all of us. #Autonomy is a #Right. Not being shot because you look dangerous or are frightened or just went to school #Right. Loving yourself & having your ability to have your own family is a #Right. #Healthcare is a #HumanRight (#AbortionIsHealthcare)

New OA paper out in @J_Law_Biosci co-authored with @JcMalgieri: "#Mental data protection and the #GDPR".
We discuss what #privacy and #DataProtection regime is needed for data about a person's mental states. 1/6
academic.oup.com/jlb/article/9/…
In this article, we introduce the notion of ‘mental data’, defined as any data that can be organized and processed to make inferences about the mental states of a person, including their #cognitive, #affective and #conative states 2/6
We review the range of technologies (e.g. #BCIs, affective computing systems, & digital behavioral tech) that enable increasingly reliable statistical associations between certain data patterns & mental activities such as memories, intentions, & emotions. 3/6

If you followed #FreedomConvoy, even supported it, did you really understand danger it poses to Canada? Maybe you waved away extremist elements, saying just a few "bad apples". You'd be deluding yourself. It's time to scratch below the surface, start here:
thewalrus.ca/ottawa-convoy/
Those various flags seen throughout the protest. They weren't one-offs or bad apples, they were embedded in the protest from the start. You saw them:
#Trump flags, Confederate flags, 3% flags, &, yes, Swastika flags (if you have one Nazi in a crowd, you've got a crowd of Nazis).
Think this is an exaggeration? Maybe start to examine what's actually driving these groups. Organizers of #TruckConvoy have a history of extremist views, from #Wexit to disgusting racist bigotry and hatred. It wasn't hidden, you just ignored it.
Start with #CanadaUnity

"#Democracy isn't consensus but dissensus! If there is no dissensus, there is no democracy. If we all agree, something's wrong. Our #freedoms have somehow been infringed. We can't all agree. It's a very old idea in political #philosophy."

Good for @Spotify standing up against #bullying. This is an important gesture on #BellLetsTalk day.

Unfortunately @NeilYoung has decided to leave. It’s his right to control his own music. It’s not his right to censor another entertainer and artist, @JoeRogan

103 years ago this day on 19 Nov 1917 (the same year in which John F Kennedy was born), in Allahabad, India (now known as Prayagraj), a daughter was born to the most illustrious political families of the time
#IndiraGandhi became India's First woman PM
#JFK became the 35th #POTUS
The #FarRight remember Indira Gandhi for the #Emergency she declared in 1975 - the suspension of Constitutionally guaranteed civil rights. But not because they are champions of citizens' rights and freedoms. On the contrary they are taking away our rights and freedoms silently
The liberal secular left remembers Indira Gandhi's Emergency because the experience taught them the value of Constitutionally-guaranteed #Rights and #Freedoms.

The #freedoms we enjoy came at an enormous cost. The contribution to #WWI and #WWII required mobilizing our people and our #NaturalResources.

#Wood was vital to every soldier – for living quarters, food and ammunition crates, trenches, and yes, coffins.

Serving mainly in #Scotland and the #BritishIsles during both World Wars, the #Canadian Forestry Corps (CFC) provided lumber for the Allies. Assembled in November 1916, the CFC was composed of dozens of forestry companies. Loggers also occasionally served as infantry.
Known as “the Sawdust Fusiliers,” the men continued their military training on Saturdays after their week’s work in the woods. Rifle range practice, training with bayonets, and tactical exercises helped prepare the CFC to protect residents and neighbouring airfields.

People keep on asking me why I care about what's happening in #HongKong, and why at @NOW4humanity we are organizing #FridaysForFreedom across the world: "it's sad but inevitable and 'only' concerns a couple million people".

Here are some quick thoughts:
2/10

1. Nothing is inevitable. Hong Kong vs #China might be the combat of David vs Goliath, but the world can come to David's rescue

2. Injustice anywhere is a treat to justice everywhere. I would argue that a couple million people is an enormous amount of injustice!
3/10

3. What's happening in #HK is part of a wider pattern of a systematic crackdown on any form of dissent by #China. It has happened in #Tibet. It's happening with the #Uighurs. Now it's #HongKong's turn, but who's next? #Taiwan? Other countries?

And so it begins...

"If you won't put your details on this list, you ain't coming in" is a slippery slope - via "#ImmunityPassports"? - to the (digital) #PapersPlease culture that the #DatabaseState proponents have always wanted.

Muse on that while you sup your pint.
N.B. It's also a wicked marketing set-up for when/if the #nhsxCovid19app launches: "Oh, you're #surveilling yourself, madam - please walk right in! No need for that inconvenient list any more..."

What other #freedoms will folk #surrender for a mere 100cm?
Please note, I am not advising against - in fact I endorse! - sensible #clinical & #PublicHealth advice. Problem is, they just crashed into @10DowningStreet's idea of the #economy. (About which we'll be told more shortly, no doubt...)

Guess who loses?

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.
