For my MSc by research @DICE_Kent I’m deciphering crest growth in #GreatCrestedNewts at individual and population levels. 🐸🦎

Male #GCNs grow ornamental crests every year during aquatic breeding period.
As UK seasons become less distinct, #pond arrival times are less predictable.
So what is happening with #crest development?🧐

We photographed >100 individual #newts over 2 breeding periods and tracked changes in crest size + shape using #ImageJ software.

Does early arrival = Early growth peak?
Or ⬆ growth period i.e. potential mating advantage?

With #Halloween approaching, what haunts you? I often worry about how quickly #animals are going extinct, and especially #frogs. Here's some of the ways your support can help me prevent then from becoming #environmental ghosts: patreon.com/MyFrogCroaked #FridayFeeling #FrogFriday
Did you know? Many baby #frogs (tadpoles) act as “river lawn mowers” by grazing on algae and plant material that falls into rivers. Their presence helps protect clean water which people and #wildlife both depend on. #FrogFriday
Also, #frogs may help control the spread of human #diseases spread by #insects, like #malaria, dengue & Zika. The tadpoles of some frog species are carnivorous & kill mosquito eggs & larvae. Keeping frogs healthy can help keep people healthy too patreon.com/MyFrogCroaked #OneHealth

This #FrogFriday I netted up some beautiful gray tree #frog #tadpoles (Hyla chrysoscelis or versicolor) and this gorgeous northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) from a small, boggy wetland. 1/n ImageImageImageImage
I also chased (and consistently missed) several mink #frogs (Lithobates septentrionalis). These crafty ranids are said to have a foul, onion-y smell, so I was bummed not to get one in hand. Something to look forward to for the next #FrogFriday in #Minnesota ! 2/n ImageImage
Although it was #FrogFriday , there were other critters out and about, too. Including a pair of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) and a few turtles (this one is a painted #turtle [Chrysemys picta]). 3/3 ImageImage
