~1 yr ago, we called on @NIH to #FundBlackscientists. The community's response was inspiring. ~50 other publications has since followed. The NIH director acknowledged the longstanding disparity was wrong. Then... well... silence. Why should we care?

When Black scientists are underfunded their perspective is lost. "The people who get to do the science determine the science that gets done" Let's stop pretending we don't bring our social perspective to bench. It's why we have racial healthcare disparity.

Non-diverse biomedical research workforce creates racial blindspots that lead to us producing racist technologies. Look no further than the Pulse Oximeter.

Friends, let's talk. Racial funding disparity is not just an @NIH problem. We, the individuals of our profession, are responsible for the racism that permeates it.

Let's fix this, shall we? (thread)
As anti-racist grant reviewers (red below), we hold the power. Let's do the following:
●Score grants of Black faculty well* (@DrPlattLab).
●Rescue grants of Black faculty so they are discussed*.
●Consider diversity when scoring the Investigator team and Innovation*.
●Learn what racism is - read on “systemic racism”, “racism”, and “antiracism” @DrIbram
●Call out and stop all racism in review panels and elsewhere. Do not let racist comments pass.
●Include Black faculty in scientific collabs and write papers and grants with them

@NIH R01’s from White scientists are funded at ~twice the award rate as Black scientists.

@NIH has known this for a decade. It has not been fixed.

@NIH and other entities have spent money and time looking for reasons for this disparity.

Meanwhile, our Black colleagues continue to suffer.

Why is this disparity critically important?

First, we commonly use @NIH R01’s to gauge “success” of faculty when it comes time for tenure.

Black faculty without an R01 may not get tenure.

The pipeline “leak” is not a leak, but rather us pushing Black faculty over a cliff.
